ITC runs a wide range of initiatives in rural India, with a total reach of 5 million people through
eChoupal and other operations. Technico is a wholly owned subsidiary of ITC limited and a leader in
the production and supply of early generation quality seed potatoes. Technico is an agribiotechnology company specializing in rapid seed potato production. Technico has developed the
proprietary TECHNITUBER® Technology, which involves the use of pathogen-tested tissue culture
and processes that enable the rapid multiplication of seed potatoes from pathogen-tested plants in
controlled environment. This 'enabling technology', which can be applied to all potato varieties,
significantly reduces the number of years it takes to produce commercial quantities of quality seed
potatoes and also shortens the time required for introduction of new varieties.
Technico has contributed significantly to the introduction of new varieties in India specially those
suitable for making French Fry and Chips. It works closely with farmers in India, China, Canada,
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and Senegal to improve the quality of seed, agronomic practices and
enhance yields and quality. It is also working closely in micro irrigation initiatives to improve the
sustainability of agriculture.
ITC provides a range of extension services to farmers, and integrates value chains. ITC promotes
sustainable agriculture practices and environmental protection through watershed development
projects covering 77,000 hectares, which benefit farmers with irrigation. ITC's Livestock Development
Program has reached over 200,000 farmers with animal husbandry services.
