Rimage Becomes Qumu: Fully Committing to Video
Communications
Today, Rimage announced it is changing its name to Qumu. In reality, there is a lot more than a simple
name change and new website, happening here. The company is working hard to stay ahead of a changing
market and changing business model. Currently, 78% of their revenue is derived from the mature disc
market, and 22% is from the video offerings of their Qumu subsidiary. However, the disc market is
undergoing a measured decline, while the market for video is expanding by leaps and bounds. The good
news is that Qumu is uniquely well suited to not only survive this sea change, but thrive from it. We
called the folks at Qumu to get the inside scoop, click through to find out what we have learned.

Productivity Lab, a visual collaboration consultancy. We interviewed Carhee--an expert
on adoption and implementation--to learn more about this crucial step for any successful

2013 TPO Magazine Feature Story: Video Migraine

In this feature story for the 2013 Telepresence Options

establishing Video in an enterprise environment in our "Video Migraine"

Introducing or expanding video across an enterprise provides significant
business value ... but not without risk. Video with in an enterprise, like

The Google and Vidyo Partnership Enters a New Phase: Scalable
WebRTC
August 28, 2013 | David S. Maldow, Esq.
Vidyo announced a new development in its relationship with Google
today. The result will be a videoconferencing experience combining the
benefits of WebRTC and SVC (scalable video coding). I spoke with Vidyo CEO, Ofer Shapiro, to get the inside
scoop on this announcement. But first, in order to understand the full context, we need to go back and take a
quick look at the very successful result of their partnership to date, Google Hangouts.
The "Google Hangout" feature is the shining star of the Google+ social network. While the debate over the long
term viability of Google+ continues, no one can deny that Hangouts are a winner. Aside from its adoption and
use among consumers (as a free alternative to Skype, which charges for multiparty meetings), some
enterprising individuals and businesses have leveraged Hangouts in truly novel video applications.

Avizia Educator: Videoconferencing and Complete Room Control
August 26, 2013 | David S. Maldow, Esq.
While the standard meeting room will always have its place in business and
education, it may be destined to become a secondary player to new,
technology powered, collaboration rooms. What is the difference? A meeting
room is a place where people talk about the work they need to do, while a
collaboration room provides the tools needed to actually get the job done.
Whether the room is powered by large touch screens, projectors, integrated
project management software, videoconferencing technology, or all of the
above and more, the purpose is clearly more than simply reviewing your progress with the boss before
returning to your cubicle.
Education has been a strong early adopter of collaboration technologies, as they often work excellently as
teaching tools. After all, a good teacher lectures, but a great teacher collaborates with the class. The problem is
that these technologies can be complicated, and a teacher should ideally be focused on the subject at hand, not
on learning all of the intricacies of the classroom projector, touch screen, VC unit, etc. etc. The teacher doesn't
need more tools, he or she needs an easy way to control all of the existing technologies, ideally from one
interface. This is the goal of the Avizia Educator. We spoke with Corey Costly (Avizia CMO) to learn more about
this new solution.

New Sony Endpoint? What Would Be The Point?
August 23, 2013 | David S. Maldow, Esq.
An item crossed my desk today regarding a new Sony
endpoint.
While the articleappears to be referring to an existing
product, it
did get me thinking about Sony and videoconferencing. I
have always
been confused by Sony's position in the videoconferencing market. This particular product, the $8,999 PCSXG100S (shown above, and released earlier this year) is a perfect example of my concern. Why is Sony, one of
the best video electronics manufacturers on the planet, always behind the times and off the mark when it
comes to videoconferencing? With Sony's amazing video expertise and massive resources they should be able
to offer more than products which simply play industry catch up, and lean on "specmanship" over user
experience.

Augmenting reality to share both experience and information
August 19, 2013 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Maria Korolov / Hyper Grid Business
At some distant point in the future, virtual reality will be good enough and
immersive enough that we can telecommute to our jobs by simply
stepping into some version of a Holodeck or plugging into some version of
the Matrix.
Today's virtual reality has only very limited use for the average corporate employee.
There are some uses. Rapid prototyping, virtual simulations, the occasional virtual meeting or conference. But
these are, right now, very much niche applications.

Wired Magazine Ranks Telepresence Solutions - DVE & Musion
Take Top Honors
August 11, 2013 | Howard Lichtman
Story by Jeremy Kingsley / Wired
Jeremy Kingsley, writing for the UK edition of Wired Magazine,
ranked a number of telepresence solutions ranging from Musion's
on-stage illusion to high-end telepresence conferencing solutions
from DVE and Polycom to on-going science experiments like
theTeleHuman Telepod being developed at the University of
Queensland. The title of the article seems to focus on on-stage
telepresence even though the majority of solutions don't really fit
into that category (I am assuming it is because the on-stage category only really has two
participants: the Musion Eyeliner and DVE's Telepresence Stage). For artists interested in creating a catalog of
on-stage telepresence content to live on after you and continue to produce ticket sales for your greatgrandchildren then you can find some tips for creating telepresence content in this article that I commented on

Intel moves to make 3D gesture control as pervasive as the mouse
September 12, 2013 | Telepresence Options

Gesture-control peripheral makers Leap Motion and Haptix have stolen the
spotlight from traditional input devices over the past year with promising new
devices and OEM design wins. A bit lost in the mix has been tech-giant Intel's
sizable investment in what it calls perceptual computing. At IDF 2013 this
week, Intel unveiled its plans to make 3D input as common as the mouse and touch have become. Front and
center was Creative's new $200 Senz3D, which supports applications developed using Intel's free perceptual
computing SDK. In addition to demos of the Senz3D, Intel announced that its upcoming 14nm Broadwell chip -available for ultrabooks in late 2014 -- will support integrating a 3D camera directly into the bezel of laptops.

higher-quality, lower-cost options for videoconferencing, it makes sense for
the feds to consider technology over travel. At least some of the time.
