Sovereignty
& Society
12 - 17 August 2012
Avondale House,
Rathdrum, Co Wicklow
Charles Stewart Parnell
was born at Avondale in
1846, at the height of the
Great Famine. He became
leader of the Irish Party in
the Westminster Parliament
and first President of the
Land League. He laid the
foundation for the eventual
ownership of the land by
the farming community
and made great progress
towards obtaining political
independence for Ireland.
Fanny and Anna Parnell
were born at Avondale (in
1848 and 1852 respectively):
they also became ardent
nationalists and through the
Ladies’ Land League and
other organisations made
a significant but too often
overlooked contribution to
Irish history.
Sovereignty &
society
Today Irish people lament a loss of the state’s
hard-won sovereignty in the face of the bailout by
the troika of the European Union, the International
Monetary Fund, and the European Central Bank.
One hundred years ago the majority of Irish people
looked forward to an increase in Irish sovereignty
as a result of the 1912 Home Rule Bill. Yet militant
minorities opposed the bill. For Ulster Unionists
home rule threatened their cherished place in the
United Kingdom while for advanced nationalists
the bill failed to offer Ireland full sovereignty. Some
Irish women even questioned the value of national
sovereignty as they fought for the personal
sovereignty of the vote.
The 2012 Parnell Summer School will explore the
theme of Sovereignty and Society as it relates to
the Ireland of today and the Ireland of home rule
leaders Charles Stewart Parnell and his successor
John Redmond.
