Q: If your life was a movie, what
would it be called"?
A: In Search ofAdventure. I like to
go o n trips and do things that are dif
ferent. For examphe, sea kayaking and
hiking.
Q: What are your m ain responsi
bilities a s a security guard?
A: Probably to safeguard the safety
of students and staff. After the safety
aspect, there’s protection of Fisher
property and upholding Fisher poli
cies. My m ain thing first is to make
others are safe bn their building or
classroom. I take "that fairly seriously.
Q: What’s bee® your biggest co n
cern?
(J: What was y o u r rea so n for
changing job hours?
A.: Well, I think the thing I m issed
m ost from working is that I didn't see
m y friends that often. W hen I saw
a position open during th e day, m y
friends became a motivating factor
because I missed spending time with
them . I’ve known them fo r approxi
mately 14 years.
Q: What's your favorite movie?
A: My favorite movie would proba
bly be Jaws. I like monster movies and
1think Jaws is a great one. I t hits upon
a b asic fear of not knowing what's u n
der the water.
I think about it every time Igo boat
ing. I'm not afraid of w hat lurks u n
der the water, but it brings up those
thoughts. I used to w atch it with my
dad while I was growing u p .
Q:What influencedyoutobecome
a security officer at Fisher?
A: Immediately follo-wing High
school, I became a personal trainer
at YMCA. After that, I had a corvette
an d drove co ast to co ast traveling the
nation. I s p e n t quite a b it of tim e in
Arizona.
I helped my ^aunt raise dogs for dog
shows. The benefit o f being able to go
to school h e r e was o n e benefit. My
d ad worked a s Kodiak security for 32
years. I had a n interest to do some
thing sim ilar t o him,
Q: W hat about Fisher attracted
you?
A: I had a coup le o f friends who*
went here w h o toldi me about the job*
interview. I be^an working during thesum m er a t the: Bills camp. I found th e
b e a u ty of the cam p u s striking. It was
a very green cam p u s which I liked. I t

Q: W hat ad vice do you have for
students?

The annual M artin Luther King cel

Ian, 19.
On Thursday, Nov. 20, Colleges
Against Cancer (CAC) held a "Great
American Smokeout" event in order
to raise awareness about the dangers
of smoking.
"We promote the dangers o f smok
ing on short-term an d long term
health," Christine Coco said.
The "Smokeout" is a national cam
paign against sm oking and second
hand smoke. It was started by Lynn
Smith from Minnesota in 1974, in an
effort to prevent smoking.
The event itself is an effort for smok
ers to give up their cigarettes, and
to not smoke for the duration of 24
hours. Apparently, this effort is met
with some difficulties.
However, the smokers who turn in a
pack of cigarettes were rewarded. Bri
an Raymond said that students who
turned in a carton of cigarettes would
receive a pack of chewing gum.
CAC also had a list of statistics on
the dangers of smoking, in an effort to

get people to stop. Some ofthese facts
included:

continuing smoikers.
Lung cancer Ls th e leading cause of
death am ong m.*en and women.
Tobacco use kills 440,000 people in
th e United States.
Cigarettes kill more- Americans
th an alcohol, car accidents, suicides,
AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs
com bined.
And, smoldng causes esophageaT,
kidney, and jpancireatic cancer.
In regards- to secondhand smoke, a
p am phlet was distributed, with facts
such as, "Secondhand smoke causes
betw een 35 ,000 and 40,000 deathrs
from, heart disease every year,"
Raymond, also gave some tips fo r
how 1o quit smoldng.
H e said, "T here are hot lines arrd
counseling JavaiTable] through work
and hospitals."
In an effort to raise awareness about
the dangers of smoking, people were
asked to write d o w n the nam es o f
loved ones rh at w ere lost because o f
smoldng hazards.
There w ere nam es of aunts, uncles,
and grandparents placed on sheets o f
pap er, in an attempt to commemorate
those who Lost tlreir lives because »of
smoking.
It was a seemingly simple, yet effec
tive way to both rem em ber those who
were lost, amd those who were thiirking about doing-She right tiring.
