Wilson School District Community Newsletter
Embracing Change
Dr. Rudy Ruth, Superintendent of Schools
In order to remain vibrant and effective, all organizations
need to embrace change. The approach that we take
is centered on developing a clear concept of what the
end experience will look like for our students and for the
surrounding community. We then thoughtfully develop
plans to reach our desired end goals.

As an example, four years ago we decided to transition
our 10th through 12th grade program to a 9th through
12th program. This adjustment allowed us to incorporate substantive change
in our academic and extracurricular program. One highlight is our academy
program, which has made it possible for our students to gain greater focus in
areas of interest through the development of each student’s potential. As you will
read about in this issue, we are rolling out a 9 through 12 technology initiative
for the 2014-15 school year. This change will alter how our teachers deliver
instruction as well as how our students interact with the teacher and each other,
and how they learn. Our end goal is to provide a secondary program that affords
our students the opportunity to achieve their post-Wilson aspirations.
Our elementary program and middle school program also undergo annual
change as we review our results for areas of improvement. Each learning level
has its goals and challenges, and we attempt to address performance gaps with
intentional effort. In the upcoming months, we will ramp up our efforts to inform
our community as to where we are and where we hope to be in the future…
keeping the desired end in mind.

By the time Wilson’s Pride is compiled and mailed,
much will have changed inside and outside the
walls of Wilson. Current events will no longer be
newsworthy, snow storms will have come and
gone, and ninth grade students will have begun
their transition into a new era of learning. Teachers
will be able to use technology to help engage
students on their turf, utilizing tools that they use
daily. Our students are digital natives, having
grown up thoroughly immersed in technology since
birth. They think, learn, and experience things
differently than their parents. Because change is
accelerating at a rapid pace, we must teach our
students how to thrive in our connected world.

Although many aspects of the world and
our local economy continue to change,
one thing remains the same – parents
and teachers work hard every day to
inspire and to educate their students
to reach their full potential. The digital
conversion that the district is committed
to will help prepare students for jobs
that currently do not exist by engaging
them in learning activities that develop
strong collaborative, critical thinking,
communication, and technological skills.
On January 31st, the high school issued
all ninth grade students Samsung
Chromebooks for educational use at
home and school. Students and teachers have received
training on how to work effectively on the Web to research,
collaborate, create and innovate. The Chromebook will
allow equitable access to the power of the Web 24/7,
which, in addition to sound curriculum and instruction,
will provide students with an unmatched educational
experience.

Upcoming Digital Learning Events at Wilson
Wilson will host a Google Leadership Symposium @
Wilson, wilsonsd.org/GoogleAtWilson, on March 5th.
This symposium brings together leadership from regional
school districts to engage in meaningful conversations
and targeted sessions concerning how school districts can
move towards bridging the digital divide for all students,
and equipping them with essential 21st century skills.
Wilson is also developing a Digital Learning Institute for
students, parents, teachers and administrators to be held
in the summer of 2014. This institute will be a venue for
teachers across the region to share best practices, for
students to learn more about digital citizenship, and for
parents/guardians to learn more about being a 21st century
parent. Look for more events by checking out the 1:1
Updates webpage, http://wilsonsd.org/1-1Updates, or by
following us on Twitter @WHS_1to1.
As part of the 1:1 Initiative, students and teachers are
integrating the Chromebook in the classroom as part of
a new way of teaching and learning.

Wilson’s Pride
The Wilson Education
Foundation will host
the inaugural
April 6, 2014, from 1-5pm,
in the Wilson High School
Gymnasium.
Page 8
This exciting, family-friendly event will include a timed cooking
competition between three local chefs: Chef Joe Church, Jimmie
Kramer’s Peanut Bar Restaurant; Chef Joe Orlando, Say Cheese!
Restaurant & Cheese; and Chef Dave Shefter, Penn Werner Hotel.
These chefs will have 30 minutes to prepare a unique dish using
three predetermined secret ingredients along with additional
ingredients accessible in the pantry. Judges will sample each
dish to determine who earns the title of Wilson’s Iron Chef!
The winner will come back to compete for the title next year.
There will also be a People’s Choice Competition featuring several
area restaurants. Each will create a menu item of their choosing using
one common predetermined ingredient. During the event, attendees
will have the opportunity to taste all of the items and vote for their
favorite! The two restaurants that receive the top votes are invited to
compete in the main Iron Chef Competition the next year.
Various food-related vendors and restaurants will also offer tasty samples of their choosing ranging
from soups or appetizers to entrees or desserts! Attendees will have the opportunity to participate
in a live auction as well as raffles. Wilson students will also participate in the event with musical
performances and cooking demonstrations!
Join us for an afternoon of food and fun! Proceeds benefit the Wilson Education Foundation, which
supports the needs of our students and teachers through academic programs including our technology
initiatives at all grade levels, grants, scholarships, facility upgrade campaigns and more. Tickets are
available for purchase online at www.wilsonsd.org/ironchef or by calling 610-670-0180 ext. 4842.

Wilson Senior Athletes Celebrate
National Letter of Intent Signing Day
On February 6, Wilson Athletics formally recognized the senior
high school student athletes who to date had committed to attend
colleges and universities and to play a sport their freshman year.
This ceremony is at the heart of the Wilson Athletic Department’s
mission. Having student-athletes continue their academic and
athletic careers in college is a tribute to the teachers, coaches,
students and parents of the Wilson School District. As of the
ceremony date, the following 18 students made commitments: Ivory Lee Bailey, Bryant University, basketball; Carley Brew,
James Madison University, basketball; Matt Close, Lafayette
College, lacrosse; Amber Cortazzo, Georgia Southern University,
swimming; Alexandra (Lexie) Gartner, Washington & Jefferson,
water polo & swimming; Kyle Gaynor, Bloomsburg University,
baseball; Hunter Hatlee, Sacred Heart University, football; Jess Hetrick, East Stroudsburg University, soccer;
Margaret Lillis, Lafayette College, field hockey; Avery Marz, St. Joseph University, basketball; Ali Rockett, Indiana
University, swimming; Alex Salesky, Susquehanna University, baseball; Ian Shaffer, Widener University, baseball;

EDUCATION FOUNDATION
As a 501(c)3 charitable organization, the Foundation
raises non-tax funding to support the needs of students
and teachers for academic initiatives, grants, scholarships,
facility upgrades and more. The goal of the WEF Venture
Grant program, primarily supported through the District’s
Internal Giving Campaign, is to enhance and to expand
educational experiences and opportunities for the students
by providing grants to individual teachers, groups of
teachers, departments, and other professional employees
that support creative and innovative programs that would
not normally be funded through the school budget. The
following projects were recently selected for funding:
For several years Berks Art Council and Land Displays
have promoted the work of professional artists through
“Fast Lane Art.” For the first year, a juried student
category was added. Elizabeth “Bibba” McKemy, high
school art teacher, encouraged visual art students in
grades 9-12 to enter the competition. Winning entries
will have their artwork displayed on billboards throughout
Berks County, and the first and second place winners
will earn scholarships. Twelve Wilson students entered
the competition and Wilson’s Emily McGuigan won the
“People’s Choice Student Category” for most Facebook
“Likes” of her artwork Majesties, which will be displayed on
electronic billboards.
The Southern Middle School Pre-STEM Academy RC
Model Club integrates science and technology in the
area of aviation. Knowledge gained helps catapult students
into the STEM Academy in 9th grade. Mark Wiebner and
Cory Luft are using a grant to purchase an iPad for the
club to utilize “first person view RC technology” in order
to fully fly their AR drone, a radio controlled flying
quadcopter helicopter.
The Tulpehocken Ecology Field Study program,
submitted by Ed Ulmer, high school biology teacher,
provides opportunities for Wilson High School students
to participate in true science outside the classroom.
Students learn about environmental issues, test and
study water quality, and observe the flora and fauna of the
Tulpehocken Ecosystem. Students use this experience
as part of a science fair project, community service, and
career exploration. Some develop educational materials
for elementary students and collaborate with local
environmental groups. Below are photos from students
participating in field study projects.
Through “Flipping the Classroom,” Jocelyn Moyer
and Karin Mohr will engage their high school Family and
Consumer Science students in a new way of learning.
Teachers will post video demonstrations online, which
students will watch as homework prior to class. This will
allot more in-class time for students to practice the new
skills with the support of the teacher.
Ann Yarwornitsky, Wilson Southern Middle School librarian,
encourages students to read through “Nooks for Today’s
Readers.” Introducing new technology through Nook
eReaders has helped generate interest in reading for
students who previously did not read for enjoyment. They
also provide easy access to multiple copies of books used
in the Berks County Reading Olympics, allowing more
Southern students to participate and resulting in a 3rdplace finish last year!
To read more about these projects, please visit
www.WilsonSD.org/EdFoundation. If you would be
interested in giving a gift to support Venture Grants or
another WEF initiative, please contact Kristin Kramer,
Executive Director, at 610.670.0180, ext. 1111 or

Wilson Students Give Back
to the Community
Generosity at Green Valley
Students, staff, and families from Green Valley Elementary
School have focused on generosity this school year
through many different events. In September, the GV
community raised $1,300 for “Hats for Hope Day” in
support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Donations
benefited the Four Diamonds Fund of Penn State Hershey
Children’s Hospital. The Home and School Association
organized two different events in December. The Salvation
Army Angel Tree collected gifts that benefited 165 local
children for the holiday season. The Holly Days Festival
was able to donate $165 to the Four Diamonds Fund.
Rachel Roberts, third grader, proposed the idea of “Cuddle
up for Cancer,” where students brought a stuffed animal to
school for a day in January and all donations benefited the
Four Diamonds Fund. In February, fourth graders will have
the opportunity to learn and make bread with their families
then donate a loaf to the local food pantry, Opportunity
House, in Reading.
Shiloh Hills Goes PINK
Isabella Miele and Ayla Dimalanta, Shiloh Hills 5th
graders, had a desire to bring awareness to Breast Cancer
Awareness month. They approached Mr. Flannery, Shiloh
Hills’ Principal, with the idea to sell T-shirts and hold a
contest with the entire school. The girls designed a T-shirt
and distributed order forms to all Shiloh Hill students in
preparation for a school-wide PINK OUT DAY. They also
organized a coloring contest for all students to color a
Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon. The girls sold 250+ pink
shirts and raised over $1000, which was donated to the
Susan G. Komen Foundation. They also chose 12 lucky
coloring contest winners, two from each grade, to win a
special rainbow loom bracelet along with a bag of goodies.
Southern Middle School
Demonstrates the Spirit of Giving
Wilson Southern Middle School was able to help the Wilson
Area Food Bank in creative ways through November and
December. In exchange for donating food items, students
who had library fines were able to pay them off, faculty
members were able to dress casually, and all students were
able to enter for chance to win either IMAX tickets or gift
cards to Subway and Mama’s Pizza. Students assisted the
volunteers from the food bank to load the truck! In addition,
students raised $750 and collected over 700 toys, games,
and stuffed animals for the Toys for Tots Campaign. The
8th-grade students raised more than $650 for the Bethany
Children’s Home and made winter cards and
www.WilsonSD.org
crafts, while Family and Consumer Science students made
more than 40 bags of goodies, all donated to the residents
of Manor Care.
CT Organizes Valentine’s for Vets
Community Service Activity
Cornwall Terrace Elementary School collected Valentines
to distribute to Veterans who have served to protect
the freedom we all enjoy and hold so dear. Community
members and students designed and decorated Valentines
to help send a message of pride and goodwill to the men
and women who have given so much of themselves for our
country and for our benefit. Wilson High School Students
Make a Difference
In January, members of the National Honor Society
volunteered at Opportunity House multiple times serving
breakfast. The Family and Consumer Science Club recently
collected nonperishable food items that were donated to
the area food bank. Many Wilson students took part in
the drive. Wilson High School students will host their first
mini THON, a 12-hour dance marathon, to raise money for
pediatric cancer, on March 8th - 9th, from 7pm to 7am. All
Wilson students and community members are invited to get
involved in this great event!
Wilson Southern Supports
I AM ABLE Foundation
Wilson Southern Middle School welcomed Chris Kaag, the
founder of I AM ABLE Foundation, in January to speak to
students and to help kick off the foundation fundraiser. The
I AM ABLE foundation is an
organization dedicated to
helping disabled and ablebodied individuals realize
they have the potential to
go further. Students sold I
AM ABLE bracelets in the
school cafeteria as well as
in the school office, and all
proceeds from the Student
Council Dance in January
went to the Foundation.
Winter 2014
Exciting Progress Continues
on the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium
By Thomas F. Tracey IV, Community Aquatics Coordinator
Despite Mother Nature’s attempts with the numerous winter
storms and the bitter cold weather, the Roy G. Snyder
Natatorium renovation is continuing to move forward as
the project works into the month of February. The facility
is currently enclosed with interior walls going up to define
the different spaces such as the state-of-the-art classroom,
pool office, locker rooms, and storage closets. The
balconies are poured and will surround the competitors
making it one of the most unique competition sites, not only
in Pennsylvania, but also the entire Northeast. The Hall
of Fame Corridor is also constructed, and new skylights
provide an abundance of additional light. At the current
time, the painting of the pool ceiling is being completed
so that the duct socks, acoustic tiles, and lighting systems
can be installed. Once this is all complete, the lifts can
be removed from the interior of the building, and the
stainless steel gutter system along with pool tiles can
begin being set.
Purchasing of the natatorium tiles, part of the Wilson
Facility Upgrade Campaign, concluded in December with
Page 11
over 275 orders received. These 4x8” tiles will adorn the
walls of the Hall of Fame Corridor. In addition, this hallway
will provide an opportunity to recognize the prestigious
history of the Wilson Aquatic Programs by displaying past
awards, photos, and the hundreds of Wilson All-American
Aquatic Athletes dating back to 1970.
Our current high school and age group athletes continue
to work hard as teams train at several local facilities thanks
to our partnership with neighboring school districts like
Governor Mifflin and Reading. Both High School Swimming
and Diving Teams sit at the top of the Central Penn League
and anticipate numerous athletes qualifying for both District
3 and PIAA State Championships. The Wilson Age Group
Swim Team continues to be competitive and looks to
contend for the Tri-County Championship Title at the end
of February.
The newly renovated aquatic facility is expected to open
in June, and will offer plenty of additional opportunities
for the community to take full advantage of its 25’x25’
yard pool. To view more photos of the project from
demolition to its current state, please visit the renovation
page on the Wilson School District’s Aquatics website at
www.wilsonsd.org/aquatics.
Shijiazhuang No. 1 High School Visits Wilson High School
In January, Wilson welcomed 18 students and three teachers/administrators from the Shijiazhuang, China, No. 1 High
School. Wilson High School has been working with this school for the last few years in developing a relationship. This past
September, Dr. Steve Gerhard, Assistant Superintendent, George Fiore, High School Principal, Shelly Campbell, World
Language Chair, and Grace Lee, Chinese Language Teacher, visited their school to further build the partnership. In April,
Wilson will send a student group to their school as part of the exchange.
