128 Years of Chaffey Football History
Football has been a part of Chaffey
College since the beginning days of the
college. Early clubs and teams were
formed as early as 1892 with football
commentary appearing regularly in the
Chaffey Argus (the campus newspaper of
the time) and the Ontario Record.
Football back then was much different
than the Panther team that will take the
field today. Players did not wear pads or
helmets and it was not unusual for several
players to be badly injured or even killed
in the course of a game. Football was not
a game of strategy but one of brute force
and coaches were rare, instead the team
captain was responsible for planning and
conditioning.
In 1893, three Southern California
colleges joined together to create the first
area football conference. Throop (which
later became CalTech), USC and Chaffey
would be the first participating schools
with non-league games played against Los
Angeles High School and San Bernardino
High School. It was the culmination of
this first season that brought Chaffey its
first historical football event. On
December 11, 1893, a team from USC
traveled by train to North Ontario to
compete against Chaffey on the football
field of the original 4th street campus.
Before a crowd of families, friends and
members of the local farming community,
Chaffey defeated USC to win the first
championship of intercollegiate football
in Southern California, 32-6.
33
Years later Chaffey’s football team would
travel across the Pacific Ocean by ship to
play Kamehameha College in Hawai’i
(now Honolulu Community College). In
an agreement originally made in 1929
between the two schools, the Hawaiian
team would first travel to California to
compete and then
Chaffey would
make the journey
the following year.
Injuries and
sickness caused
the 1929 game to
be cancelled but in
late-December
1930 Chaffey’s
football team
made the 2000
mile voyage based on the original
arrangement. Chaffey would play and
win 2 games in Hawai’i (one against a
local high school to benefit the Shriner’s
Hospital), tour the area and participate in
cultural activities before returning to the
mainland. This game would become the
precursor to the annual Christmas-time
Aloha Bowl. The following year as
promised, the Hawaiian team traveled to
Ontario to play Chaffey on the newly
constructed Graber Field (on the Chaffey
High School.College campus) named for
local businessman and
Chaffey Trustee, Clifford
Graber.
In 1947, Chaffey would
again participate in a bowl
game. After back-to-back
conference championships,
that December the Panthers
(as they were now known)
were invited to participate
in the 2nd Junior Rose
Bowl in Pasadena.
Representing the west,
Chaffey would face the
Cameron Aggies of
Lawton, OK, a team that was ranked first
in the US. Cheered on by 55,000 fans
including a major contingent from
Fontana’s Kaiser Steel, the Panthers
proved they were not just the “Best in the
West” but National Champions as well,
defeating the Aggies 39-26.
Table of Contents
In the 15 years Head Coach Carl Beach
has been at Chaffey, he has led the
Panthers to three conference
championships and 9 bowl games
including the 1996 Southern California
Bowl, Chaffey’s first bowl appearance
since 1947.
Football has been an integral part of
campus life at Chaffey since the college’s
founding 125 years ago. Days of playing
on the lawn in Ontario, or sharing a field
with Chaffey High are long since gone.
Coaches ..........................................3-6
Welcome to the 2011 Chaffey College
football season. This season is sure to
be an exciting one as we open the
season against local rival San
Bernardino Valley College.
From last year's football team,
eleven players were named
to the All-Central
Conference team. In
addition, nine players
received scholarships to
four-year universities across
the United States including
two Panthers headed to
Nebraska and one to USC. We
celebrate with them and their families
as they continue their academic and
athletic journey.

water polo and the beginning of the
basketball season. These coaches have
put together fine teams of athletes
that value the spirit of athletic
competition and academic success.
We work diligently to offer the best
experiences and opportunities for our
athletes both academically and
athletically where students are

Welcome to the 2011 season of
Panther football. Fall is always
an exciting time here on
campus with the beginning of
a new school year and the
kick off of intercollegiate
athletics.
The Panthers now enjoy their own home –
welcoming you to Grigsby Field, named
for the Bill & Paula Grigsby family who
generously donated to the athletic
program for many years.
Welcome to the 2011 season of
Panther Football –
128 years of excellence.
This season marks my 15th
year at the helm of Chaffey’s
football program. Each year
hundreds of young men take to the
practice field hoping to pursue their
dream of playing at the collegiate
level. Many of the players tonight
will continue that journey beyond
Grigsby Field – representing the
college as alumni at 4-year
universities and colleges
nationwide.
Whether I'm on the football field
coaching or at a soccer, volleyball or
water polo game, I invite you to join
me in cheering on the Panthers this
season. Our coaches have recruited
a fine group of student-athletes that
take pride in their academic and
athletic pursuits.
Please plan to join me for our
Annual Tailgate Party, November 5.
This is a great opportunity to show
your support for our football
program as fans, alumni, friends
and family all gather prior to
kickoff for music, entertainment and
food.

The 2010 Chaffey College Panthers finished the season 6-5. The
season was filled with its share of ups and downs. Injuries to several
key starters early in the season directly affected the outcome of the
season.
Chaffey started the preseason strong with two close victories over
SBVC and Mt. San Jacinto. The Panthers dropped a close one to
perennial powerhouse Saddleback. After another close victory on the
road versus Ventura, Chaffey dropped a hard fought game to RCC.
The Panthers began their conference play in the new Central West
Conference with a win over Citrus and two more wins over Long
Beach City and Antelope Valley College. Chaffey finished the
season 6 – 4 and received a berth in the Western States Bowl. This
was the Panthers 10th appearance in a bowl game in the last 15
seasons.
Those 2010 Panthers receiving All Conference honors were: Dallas
Kelley (USC), Daimion Stafford (Nebraska), Joseph Carter
(Nebraska), Brandon Caldwell (Central Missouri), Jerald Hines,
Collin Munro (Marshall), Trevor Layne, Erin Madden, John Patrick
and Judah Linder.
We wish all the Panthers from last year’s team the very best as they
move forward with their education and life.
The 2011 season is here and this year’s team is worked hard during
the off-season to capture a conference championship and make
another bowl appearance.
ENJOY THE SEASON!

The Chaffey College Spirit Team performs at all home football and basketball games,
as well as at rallies, special show events and fundraising activities.
The college’s athletic department is
one of the finest in the state. This
success can be attributed to many
factors, great faculty, coaches,
academic counseling, and our studentathletes. We understand that
academics come first and should be
the most important part in any
student’s life at Chaffey. That is why
the athletic program includes an
athletic counselor.
Jeff Moser and other staff members
work with student-athletes to provide
guidance and support as they progress
through their academic careers.
Learning specialists and tutors lend
strong support by working with our
athletes on their learning styles and
strategies, as well as other learning
programs.
More than 85% of our athletes are
recruited from the district that our
college serves. The 2010-11 school
year was extremely successful for the
Chaffey athletic programs. Through
the hard work and dedication of our
coaches, staff, and counselor, these
athletes are demonstrating academic
success. Last year, numerous athletes
transferred to a college or university,
many of which received scholarships.

ATHLETIC TRAINING
This season marks Elias Levanway’s second on the Panther staff. As the
athletic trainer, Elias plays an integral role in the athletic program
providing optimal medical care to the student-athletes through
preventative measures, acute emergency and non-emergency attention,
rehabilitative measures, injury/illness management and education.
As the athletic trainer, Elias provides individual support and personal
attention to each student-athlete. The combination of Elias’ education and
training makes him an outstanding athletic trainer and an asset to the
Chaffey College athletic program.

The Chaffey College Spirit Team performs at all home football and basketball games,
as well as at rallies, special show events and fundraising activities.
The college’s athletic department is
one of the finest in the state. This
success can be attributed to many
factors, great faculty, coaches,
academic counseling, and our studentathletes. We understand that
academics come first and should be
the most important part in any
student’s life at Chaffey. That is why
the athletic program includes an
athletic counselor.
More than 85% of our athletes are
recruited from the district that our
college serves. The 2010-11 school
year was extremely successful for the
Chaffey athletic programs. Through
the hard work and dedication of our
coaches, staff, and counselor, these
athletes are demonstrating academic
success. Last year, numerous athletes
transferred to a college or university,
many of which received scholarships.
Jeff Moser and other staff members
work with student-athletes to provide
guidance and support as they progress
through their academic careers.
Learning specialists and tutors lend
strong support by working with our
athletes on their learning styles and
strategies, as well as other learning
programs.

The 2010 Chaffey College Panthers finished the season 6-5. The
season was filled with its share of ups and downs. Injuries to several
key starters early in the season directly affected the outcome of the
season.
Chaffey started the preseason strong with two close victories over
SBVC and Mt. San Jacinto. The Panthers dropped a close one to
perennial powerhouse Saddleback. After another close victory on the
road versus Ventura, Chaffey dropped a hard fought game to RCC.
The Panthers began their conference play in the new Central West
Conference with a win over Citrus and two more wins over Long
Beach City and Antelope Valley College. Chaffey finished the
season 6 – 4 and received a berth in the Western States Bowl. This
was the Panthers 10th appearance in a bowl game in the last 15
seasons.
Those 2010 Panthers receiving All Conference honors were: Dallas
Kelley (USC), Daimion Stafford (Nebraska), Joseph Carter
(Nebraska), Brandon Caldwell (Central Missouri), Jerald Hines,
Collin Munro (Marshall), Trevor Layne, Erin Madden, John Patrick
and Judah Linder.
1974
We wish all the Panthers from last year’s team the very best as they
move forward with their education and life.
1975
The 2011 season is here and this year’s team is worked hard during
the off-season to capture a conference championship and make
another bowl appearance.

128 Years of Chaffey Football History
Football has been a part of Chaffey
College since the beginning days of the
college. Early clubs and teams were
formed as early as 1892 with football
commentary appearing regularly in the
Chaffey Argus (the campus newspaper of
the time) and the Ontario Record.
Football back then was much different
than the Panther team that will take the
field today. Players did not wear pads or
helmets and it was not unusual for several
players to be badly injured or even killed
in the course of a game. Football was not
a game of strategy but one of brute force
and coaches were rare, instead the team
captain was responsible for planning and
conditioning.
In 1893, three Southern California
colleges joined together to create the first
area football conference. Throop (which
later became CalTech), USC and Chaffey
would be the first participating schools
with non-league games played against Los
Angeles High School and San Bernardino
High School. It was the culmination of
this first season that brought Chaffey its
first historical football event. On
December 11, 1893, a team from USC
traveled by train to North Ontario to
compete against Chaffey on the football
field of the original 4th street campus.
Before a crowd of families, friends and
members of the local farming community,
Chaffey defeated USC to win the first
championship of intercollegiate football
in Southern California, 32-6.
33
Years later Chaffey’s football team would
travel across the Pacific Ocean by ship to
play Kamehameha College in Hawai’i
(now Honolulu Community College). In
an agreement originally made in 1929
between the two schools, the Hawaiian
team would first travel to California to
compete and then
Chaffey would
make the journey
the following year.
Injuries and
sickness caused
the 1929 game to
be cancelled but in
late-December
1930 Chaffey’s
football team
made the 2000
mile voyage based on the original
arrangement. Chaffey would play and
win 2 games in Hawai’i (one against a
local high school to benefit the Shriner’s
Hospital), tour the area and participate in
cultural activities before returning to the
mainland. This game would become the
precursor to the annual Christmas-time
Aloha Bowl. The following year as
promised, the Hawaiian team traveled to
Ontario to play Chaffey on the newly
constructed Graber Field (on the Chaffey
High School.College campus) named for
local businessman and
Chaffey Trustee, Clifford
Graber.
In 1947, Chaffey would
again participate in a bowl
game. After back-to-back
conference championships,
that December the Panthers
(as they were now known)
were invited to participate
in the 2nd Junior Rose
Bowl in Pasadena.
Representing the west,
Chaffey would face the
Cameron Aggies of
Lawton, OK, a team that was ranked first
in the US. Cheered on by 55,000 fans

campus life at Chaffey since the college’s

Welcome to the 2011 Chaffey College
football season. This season is sure to
be an exciting one as we open the
season against local rival San
Bernardino Valley College.
From last year's football team,
eleven players were named
to the All-Central
Conference team. In
addition, nine players
received scholarships to
four-year universities across
the United States including
two Panthers headed to
Nebraska and one to USC. We
celebrate with them and their families
as they continue their academic and
athletic journey.
can also enjoy soccer, volleyball,
water polo and the beginning of the
basketball season. These coaches have
put together fine teams of athletes
that value the spirit of athletic
competition and academic success.
We work diligently to offer the best
experiences and opportunities for our
athletes both academically and
athletically where students are
challenged in sports competitions as
well as the classroom.

Welcome to the 2011 season of
Panther football. Fall is always
an exciting time here on
campus with the beginning of
a new school year and the
kick off of intercollegiate
athletics.
The Panthers now enjoy their own home –
welcoming you to Grigsby Field, named
for the Bill & Paula Grigsby family who
generously donated to the athletic
program for many years.
Welcome to the 2011 season of
Panther Football –
128 years of excellence.
This season marks my 15th
year at the helm of Chaffey’s
football program. Each year
hundreds of young men take to the
practice field hoping to pursue their
dream of playing at the collegiate
level. Many of the players tonight
will continue that journey beyond
Grigsby Field – representing the
college as alumni at 4-year
universities and colleges
nationwide.
Whether I'm on the football field
coaching or at a soccer, volleyball or
water polo game, I invite you to join
me in cheering on the Panthers this
season. Our coaches have recruited
a fine group of student-athletes that
take pride in their academic and
athletic pursuits.
Please plan to join me for our
Annual Tailgate Party, November 5.
This is a great opportunity to show
your support for our football
program as fans, alumni, friends
and family all gather prior to
kickoff for music, entertainment and
food.
