INTRODUCTORY-LEVEL TWO-DAY HEC-HMS COURSE
METROPOLITAN WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT
WATERSHED MANAGEMENT ORDINANCE FOCUS
November 11-12, 2015
The Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) – Chicago Chapter is pleased to present an
Introductory-Level HEC-HMS Course. HEC-HMS was created by the United States Army Corps of
Engineers in the mid-1990’s to simulate the complete hydrologic processes of watershed systems. The
software includes many traditional hydrologic analysis procedures such as event infiltration, unit
hydrographs, and hydrologic routing. The software features a completely integrated work environment
including a database, data entry utilities, computation engine, and results reporting tools. A graphical
user interface allows the user seamless movement between the different parts of the software.
The “hands-on” computer workshop will introduce you to HEC-HMS and teach you how to use it with
confidence. Short lectures will be supplemented with example problems on the computer and question
and answer sessions. Using sample problems, the workshop will take you through HEC-HMS step-bystep. On the first day, you will learn about the background and general capabilities of the model. In
addition, you will work with the basin, precipitation, and runoff modules of the model. The second day
will be reserved for covering stream routing, reservoir routing, dam break analysis, model execution,
and analysis of results. After attending this two day course, you will feel comfortable enough with HECHMS to begin using it immediately.
Throughout the course, several teachings will focus on how HEC-HMS can be used to meet
requirements of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s (MWRD) Watershed Management
Ordinance (WMO). The MWRD WMO became effective in Spring 2014 and recommended the usage
of HEC-HMS to meet some of its requirements.
The main presenter will be Thomas Burke, PE, PhD, CFM from Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd.
Thomas has over 18 years of consulting experience and oversees a staff of 22 water resources
engineers. His professional experience include hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, feasibility studies,
FEMA floodplain and floodway map revisions, stormwater master plans and watershed studies. He is
a Past-President of the Illinois Section and Governor for Region 3 of ASCE. He has taught numerous
hydrologic and hydraulic modeling seminars and has co-authored books and manuals on stormwater.
Thomas and his team at CBBEL had an instrumental role in assisting MWRD in authoring the WMO
and have already taught numerous training workshops on HEC-HMS and its relationship in meeting
requirements of the WMO.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. 14 PDH’s will be provided upon completion
of this course. This is a great class for Illinois licensed engineers who haven’t met their
continuing education requirements for the November 30th renewal deadline! All course materials
(including a review manual) will be provided at the course and are included in the course fee. All
registrants will be required to bring a laptop with the latest version of HEC-HMS previously installed.
The latest version is available for download at:
http://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hechms/downloads.aspx. Registration deadline is November 1, 2015. This course has very limited
capacity, so register today!
