While some may think of a coach simply as a person to move the cones around at training and 'bark' orders from the sidelines, the truth is vastly different. Coaches play many roles in country football clubs - tacticians, mentors, marketers, fundraisers, and in some cases a father figure for young players. The list of jobs is endless and the value to a local community immense. It is for this reason the AFL Western District Commission fully supports the work undertaken by the South West Coaches Association. The Association's executive works hard to provide a high level of support for our local coaches including accreditation, continual education options, high level guest speakers and presenters and support structures for coaches at all levels. All the best to all of our coaches from Auskick level through to senior football in season 2014 and be sure to call on the Coaches Association should you require any assistance. Lachy Patterson Region General Manager AFL Western District SWCA ACE RADIO CHAIRMANS REPORT Chairman: Terry Molan Committee: Danny Franc, Adam Hawke, Matt Dunn RGM – Western District: Lachy Patterson FDM: Jock Whiting In 2014 the South West Coaches Association will again be very pro-active in promoting and conducting activities that will enhance coaching awareness and outcomes from the Auskick, Junior, Youth and Senior coaching ranks. A very successful combined South West - Hampden Level One Youth / Senior coaching course was conducted at Emmanuel College, Warrnambool in which 90 coaches attended. It is hoped with two Auskick / Junior Orientation coaching courses and a Youth / Senior coaching seminar in May that coaches will avail themselves of new coaching and teaching techniques. All seminars are at no cost to the coaches attending. To assist coaches with up to date resources all coaches attending the Youth / Senior seminar will receive at no cost an excellent new publication titled Groundwork - The Winning Edge with plenty of new drills and skills strategies. The SWCA in its ongoing efforts to recognise good coaching practices has introduced a new initiative being a weekly award for "Coach of the Week" which will replace the "Coach of the Month" with the Club whose coach is deemed Coach of the week will receive a $50 sports voucher and will be a nominee for the SWCA Coach of the Year. It is hoped Club’s will nominate coaches who are not only coaching well but making a contribution to the local community by way of a football linkage.
