Dear Principal and Food Service Manager:
The Department of Food and Nutrition invites you to celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW), March 7-11,
2016 with the theme, “Wake Up! to School Breakfast”. This
week-long celebration of the School Breakfast Program is
spreading the message that school breakfast provides a sunny, energizing start to the day for your students. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) offers free breakfast to all students each school day!
The School Breakfast Program provides students the opportunity to start the school day with
a healthy meal they might not otherwise have access to. Students that eat school breakfast
begin their day ready to learn—reflected in higher test scores and better classroom behavior—and have improved dietary intakes and reduced levels of food insecurity*.
Food and Nutrition has developed a packet of suggested activities for your use and encourage you to participate in the NSBW activities outlined. We hope that you will use the information provided to promote your School Breakfast Program. This packet is intended for use
by food service managers, teachers, and staff to make NSBW a success for the students of
Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Additionally, the School Nutrition Association is promoting a School Breakfast Art Contest.
The contest encourages students to create their own advertisement for breakfast at school
by drawing an ad using a combination of pictures and words. Details are listed in this promotional package.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Wanda Pedraza, Director, Department of Food and Nutrition at 786-275-0454. We look forward to your feedback on the success of promoting NSBW activities during the week of March 7-11, 2016.
Much success,
Penny Parham, MS, RD

TAKE YOUR PARENT TO BREAKFAST DAY
As a way of promoting breakfast in our schools, the parents need to
know how nutritious and wonderful our food really is!
Please extend an invitation for parents to sample our food and have
breakfast with their children during National School Breakfast Week.
This includes going out of our way to make sure that everything is perfect for new potential customers.
For this event, consult with your principals; please note that teachers must be notified, so they can send notices home to parents. Parents may purchase a school
breakfast meal for two dollars ($2.00) each and share a healthy breakfast with their
children.
Remember breakfast for all M-DCPS students is “no charge” every school day.

TOUR OF THE KITCHEN
Throughout National Breakfast Week, Food Service Managers and staff are
encouraged to offer tours of the kitchen to students and teachers. This is a
great opportunity for your school to shine by showing parents and community
stakeholders your food service program.
Suggested topics for the tour include the following:
How is the food prepared?
What is the function of the large equipment?
Health benefits of school breakfast.
“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”
Please allow teachers the opportunity to bring their classes to the kitchen to
learn what it is like to serve so many breakfasts! If time allows, older students
may be offered the chance to assist with the preparation of simple items. All
grade levels are encouraged to participate.
Capture the moments with pictures!
