Academic
From our house to yours
Greetings!
We’ve been through our first year of semesters, and most of us have survived. Still,
the change in the calendar requires a little getting accustomed to. It’s hard to believe
another fall semester is coming up so soon.
The semester calendar is allowing us to try some different and interesting new things.
For instance, this October we will have our first ever Fall Reading Days. We won’t have
any scheduled classes those two days. Instead, we will have open readings, recitals,
special lectures, unique internships and clinicals, and whatever else we think will enrich
our students’ academic experiences. We can’t provide the details just yet, but we want
you to be watching your email, online and for posters in the halls once fall classes
begin.
Also, if you are one of those folks who has completed most of your work towards a
degree, but, for whatever reason, just haven’t finished your program, you should call
513-732-5319 and make an appointment with an advisor: we’ll get you back on track in
a hurry.
You can also get started on that bachelor’s degree that you’ve been considering. If
you already have an associate degree in a technical field (AAB, AAS, ATS), you should
consider our Bachelor in Applied Administration (BTAS) degree program. (Details on
page 6.)
Come to Clermont College where we bring the power of UC ... close to home.

Fall Semester 2013
UC Clermont Health Information Systems Student Hired by
Children’s Hospital After Just Seven Months in Program
After taking a few years away from the corporate world to raise her three children—a
son, age 7, and twin daughters, age 4—and to relocate with her family from Atlanta
to Cincinnati, UC Clermont College student Priya Dayal decided she was ready to
pursue a new career. Because she was interested in the medical field, and also wanted
to leverage her bachelor’s degree in electronics and her career expertise, she was
particularly intrigued by the College’s Health Information Systems program.
“Not only was the program perfect for me in terms of my background, but also because
it’s completely online, it gives me a lot of flexibility,” explains Dayal.
Dayal started in Fall 2012 with a full course load, and her whole family had to adjust:
“There was some juggling of schedules at first, but I’m able to make this work because
my husband works from home, and our daughters are in preschool.”
And Dayal herself had to figure out how to get back into student mode. “It was hard at
first—I think I work harder in this program than I did the
first time I was in college!” she laughs. “I found that I did
my best studying at night, after everyone went to bed so
the house was quiet.”
Although she wasn’t sure what to expect from online
classes, she’s been pleasantly surprised by the amount of
interaction with other students and with her professors
via online message boards.
Dayal is clearly self-directed. Even with just seven months of Health Information
Systems coursework under her belt, she interviewed for and was offered a temporary,
full-time position in Children’s HIM department.
“They hire students just entering the field from all over the area, first as temporary
employees—I think as a way to help students determine if this is an area they want to
pursue,” Dayal says. “The pattern seems to be that after three months they may offer
temporary employees a permanent position.”
Although she’s only been working at Children’s Hospital for two months, Dayal has
already become proficient in multiple aspects within the department. She’s also
directed some training and guidance for new employees.
“In my previous job I was a training manager, so I was glad to be able to use that skill
set again,” she says.
“An opportunity like this
is a win-win for healthcare
organizations and students.”
“Because of my background in information systems, I didn’t find the technical part
of the classes to be a challenge—but I also think someone with minimal computer
experience would find the online aspect easy to navigate,” Dayal says. “Plus, the classes
offer many different ways for people to learn: you can listen to a lecture podcast, or
watch it as a video or a PowerPoint presentation.”
During the second semester, in Spring 2013, Dayal took advantage of the program’s
flexibility by dialing back her course load to just two classes, as she anticipated needing
some additional free time once her children started spring sports.
She’s hopeful that the hospital will bring her onboard
full time as she continues her studies. Because she’d like
to be a part of the first UC Clermont Health Information
Systems graduating class in Spring 2014, she’s taking one
class this summer semester, and a full load again in the
fall.
After graduating from UC Clermont’s program, she
plans to earn her Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification. Her
ultimate goal is to transition to UC’s Uptown Campus to complete the four-year Health
Information Management Bachelor’s Degree program and earn a Registered Health
Information Administrator (RHIA) certification.
“I certainly wasn’t expecting to get a job in my new field so quickly,” she says. “But when
the opportunity to work for Children’s came up, I couldn’t say no. I’ve always wanted to
work at a hospital that cares for kids, and I’d love to stick around as long as I can. It is a
great place to work and the people I work with are wonderful.”
With six weeks to go until the end of the second semester, Dayal was referred by UC
Clermont College Professor Karen Lankisch, PhD, RHIA for a position in Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s Health Information Management (HIM)
department. Lankisch, as Director of the Health Information Systems Technology
program, regularly receives notices from Children’s human resources department about
job openings.
“Through her course work, Priya demonstrated her readiness to begin working in
health information. She brought previous experience, as well as exposure to the course
content, to combine the necessary skills and knowledge to begin working in the field
of health information at Children’s while still working on her degree,” explains Lankisch.
“An opportunity like this is a win-win for healthcare organizations and students.
Students gain on the job experience and healthcare organizations gain employees with
current experience and knowledge of health information.”
Because the UC Clermont Health Information System courses are entirely online, the
program provides the flexibility that allows students to work at a job and to work
on their degree at the same time, Lankisch continues. “This does take a self-directed
student that can manage their time, job and course requirements,” she notes.

Prerequisites & corequisites
Prerequisites are requirements that you must meet before you can take a
course. For example, you must take German I before you can take German II.
Sometimes a prerequisite is that you be in a certain major, or have a particular
class standing. Corequisites are requirements that you must meet at the same
time you take a course. For example you must take the General Chemistry
lab along with the General Chemistry lecture course. Courses can have both
prerequisites and corequisites. See the online schedule at www.onestop.
uc.edu for specific prerequisites and corequisites for offered courses, and
check with your advisor before registering.

FAFSA Workshops
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
Student Services Building, Room 100
st
Mo
Fridays at 11 a.m.
Curious about us?
Do you wonder what we offer and how to enroll in classes? We invite you to
attend one of our college information sessions: Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and
Fridays at 10 a.m. (Except holidays, of course!) These weekly events include
an information session followed by a walking tour.
Learn about our campus and our connection to UC, the programs we offer,
admissions and financial aid, student life, campus activities and much more.
Sessions start in the Student Services Building, room 100, and can be an
excused “college visit” for high school students. These sessions are also a great
way for adult learners to find out more about our programs and how to get
started.
For more information or to schedule your visit today, go to
www.ucclermont.edu/admissions and select “Visit Us” or, call 513-732-5319.
call 513-732-5319 before you come
Please bring the following items with you:
1. 1040’s and W2’s from the most recent tax year for yourself
(and your parents if you are under age 25)
2. FAFSA personal identification number
(Go to www.pin.ed.gov now to get a PIN before the workshop
if you do not already have one.)
Come to the Student Services Building, Room 100, 15 minutes
prior to check-in. Workshops are free and open to anyone who
has applied for admission to UC Clermont College.
Please check online for prerequisites, corequisites and special permissions required.

Available Library Services
Our library has added three great communication tools –
Facebook, Twitter, and text-a-librarian.
Our librarians use Facebook and Twitter to keep library users
abreast of news, services, and resources. “Like” us on Facebook
and “follow” us on Twitter for an instant connection to all “Library”
things. To find us on these social networking sites, see the links
on our website.
www.ucclermont.edu/library
Do you text? We do, too! You now have another way to ask-alibrarian. Our text-a-librarian service is available during regular
library hours. Text us to get help finding resources, using library
tools, and more. For details, click the ask-a-librarian link on our
website. Remember, regular text messaging rates apply.
Of course, face-to-face research help is always available during
our open hours.

class meets 10/12, 10/26, 11/9 & 11/30 - Final FRIDAY, 12/6 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm
Just want to take a course?
If you are a new student or are returning after a year or more away, just go
to www.onestop.uc.edu. Click on “Forms.” Look for “Class and Registration
Forms.” Download and print the Basic Data Form for Non‑Degree Seeking
Students.
Fill it out and fax the completed form to 513-732-5303. Please allow 1-2
business days to process your data. Then go to www.onestop.uc.edu. Under
“My Information” select “get my username.” You will need your username to
register online. Your initial password will be Uc! combined with your date of
birth (Uc!mmddyyyy). Register for class online at www.onestop.uc.edu.
If you are unable to register successfully, please call registration at
513-732-5218 or 513-732-5201. If you don’t have access to the Internet, you
may also register in-person, now through the start of classes.
This process allows you to take classes as a non-degree seeking student. If you
need financial aid, you must apply for admission and be admitted to a degree
program to be eligible for aid. Call 513-732-5319 for details.
Please check online for prerequisites, corequisites and special permissions required.

FIRST HALF-TERM (August 26 - October 13)
Half-Term sessions this fall
If you have attended any of our summer sessions, you are probably familiar
with our first and second half-terms. These are roughly half the length of a full
semester. You attend class twice as often per week so you still get full credit for
the course. This fall, you may notice that some of the upper division nursing
courses are offered during half-term sessions. We wanted you to know that this
is not a mistake! UC Clermont currently only schedules half-term courses during
the summer, but some of UC’s other colleges (like the College of Nursing) may
schedule some half-term courses during fall and spring semesters.

That’s right, when you attend UC Clermont College you are attending the
University of Cincinnati. That’s the name that appears on your diploma along
with your name and the university’s great seal. It also means you have full
access to all UC student support services including Langsam Library (and
all the UC libraries), all recreational facilities, and student tickets to Bearcats
games--soccer, basketball, football, the works.

Advising
Computers on campus
If you are considering college and unsure
of your options or hesitant about what
program would be best for your needs, call
513-732-5319 to talk to an admissions
counselor. Also call if you have previously
attended college and want to continue
your education, but aren’t sure where to
start or how your previous work applies to
the program you want.
You will find having your own personal computer is an advantage. If you have a
laptop, tablet or other personal computing device you can enjoy wireless access across
95 percent of our campus. If you don’t have a personal computing device, you may
use the student open lab to work on your assignments. The open lab is equipped with
Windows based PCs running the same software that you use in your courses. All of
them are equipped with DVD/RW drives. We highly recommend you buy a USB drive to
store your data. You may use the open lab any time during posted hours. However, we
request that you restrict your use to academic purposes.
Current students should call 513-732-5319 to make an appointment with their
academic advisor before they register for each semester.
Students can also take advantage of substantial academic discounts when purchasing
software and computers through the bookstore or
directly from the manufacturer.
Bookstore
You don’t have to be a UC student to shop here. Open year-round, the bookstore offers
reference materials, general books, gifts, clothing, snacks, UC souvenirs and other
convenience merchandise. Of course,
our students can purchase all their
textbooks and required supplies here,
too.
You can even order your books online
by going to www.ucclermont.edu and
selecting Students from the left menu.

Career services
Our Career Services Office provides assistance with resume writing, finding job
opportunities, polishing interviewing skills, and developing job search strategies.
We are featuring a new booklet designed to organize the job search process which
is available to our students and alumni. Besides job search skills, we also provide
guidance to our students who are not sure if they are in the right major. If you are
considering a career change, you are welcome to talk to our career counselor about
educational opportunities here at UC Clermont that might help you make that change
successfully. Please call 513-732-5277 to make an appointment.
Cougar Café
The Cougar Café serves our students during fall and spring semesters. Their menu
includes flavored coffees (hot and iced), smoothies, hot and cold sandwiches, pizza,
soups, chili, salads, pastries and more. They are open from breakfast until the start of
evening classes.
Vending machines are available any time the campus is open.

The college utilizes a pay-for-print system in the Learning Center, open computer lab
and library. In order to print, you must have your Bearcat Card or your UCID.
As a student, you will be given a free university
email account (U‑Connect). The university will
use this for all official communication with you.
Information on accessing and using your email
account, details on wireless access, instructional
technologies and campus software can be found
at www.ucclermont.edu/about/tech_serv.
You may also stop by the Clermont Campus
Support desk (118 Jones Bldg.) anytime you’re on
campus—they can help you with any of these.
Veterans
All military Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and Active Duty personnel are
welcome on our campus. We find that, as students, Veterans bring maturity, strength,
discipline and a perspective on the world that is invaluable. A webpage that describes
the steps necessary to use your GI Bill benefits at UC Clermont can be seen at
www.ucclermont.edu/students/mil_vet.html. Please visit our Veterans Affairs Office
in room 24A of the Peters-Jones Building (lower level, by Cougar Cafe) or contact
Jeffrey Bosworth at 513-558-5358 (or email jeffrey.bosworth@uc.edu) for further
information.
Counseling services
Compass Counseling Center—Helping students navigate life’s challenges
The Compass Counseling Center is a place where students at UC Clermont College can
not only get help adjusting to college life, but also where they can learn to deal with
any other significant life stressors that may be interfering with their ability to succeed,
both academically and outside the classroom. A Licensed Social Worker and a Licensed
Professional Counselor are available to any currently enrolled student who needs to talk
to someone about any personal difficulties.
Services at the center are free and confidential. Students are welcome to walk into
our office for assistance at any time, but appointments are encouraged. To learn more
about the services available, or to schedule an appointment with the counselor, feel
free to stop by the office during office hours or call 513-732-5263.

Disabilities services
Library
We strive to make all aspects of college life accessible and rewarding for students who
face educational barriers. Our mission includes providing services to maximize students’
abilities. We serve approximately 150 students per quarter. Typical accommodations
that we arrange include—
• Offering extended test taking time
• Providing notetakers or alternative format text
• Arranging for sign language interpreters
If you wish services or accommodations, you must provide our office with recent
documentation of your disability (from a licensed health professional). We will
coordinate necessary accommodations with appropriate campus personnel. If you
have completed your admissions application, please notify our office before taking
your placement test, so that we may arrange necessary accommodation. For more
information, contact the Disability Services Office at 513-732-5327 or email
clermontDSO@ucmail.uc.edu.
Our library is the gateway to a wide variety of information resources that support the
curriculum taught at UC Clermont College. We hold both traditional and electronic
format materials. Our students have 24/7 electronic access to over 65,000 full text
electronic journals, 390,000 full text electronic books and 650 indexes and databases.
In traditional formats, the library holds over 30,000 books, 1,000 videos, and 2,500
microfilms.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center (TLC) is one of UC Clermont’s best student resources. Free to all
students, TLC is a great place for those who would like academic assistance. Whether
you are struggling with a course or want to maintain a high GPA, The Learning Center is
a place where all students can work towards achieving their academic goals.
Take a look at our programs and services:
Tutoring: Our experienced staff consists of professional tutors as well as trained peer
tutors who can assist you in numerous courses, including those in English, math,
chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, accounting, economics, foreign languages, and
other subjects. Walk in or make an appointment for help.
Supplemental Instruction: SI is a series of weekly review sessions led by students who
have succeeded in historically difficult courses. Get together with your classmates and
collaboratively review difficult concepts and sharpen your skills.
ESL Assistance: For UC Clermont students whose first language is not English, we have
several English as a Second Language resources to help while you are at UC Clermont.
Our ESL specialist, Amy Abafo, offers one-on-one tutoring as well as conversation
workshops. Stop by The Learning Center to learn more.

We are a member of OhioLINK, a consortium of Ohio’s college and university libraries
and the State Library of Ohio. OhioLINK offers access to more than 45 million library
items statewide. Our students may borrow circulating items owned by any OhioLINK
library and have them sent
to our library for check out.
Of course, our students
also have access to, and
borrowing privileges from,
any library in the UC system.
Placement testing
We want all our students to succeed! That’s why we require new students to take
a placement test to evaluate English, math, reading and keyboarding skills. These
assessments ensure that you begin your courses at the level that is best for you. This is
not a test that you pass or fail and results do not affect your admission to the College.
Please take your placement test as soon as possible so you can attend an earlier
orientation and be more likely to get your first choice of classes. Completing your
placement test will allow you to register for any open course you have tested into.
To schedule your placement test and for more information, visit
www.ucclermont.edu/placementtest or call 513-732-5219.
Student health insurance
The State of Ohio requires all students be covered by health insurance; their own or
insurance provided by the university. If you register for six or more credit hours, the
cost of individual student health insurance will automatically be added to your bill.
If you are already insured through another policy or program and do not want the
student health insurance, you must waive the student coverage. You can do this online
at www.onestop.edu. Just look under My bill, select waive my health insurance and
follow the instructions from there.
All student health services are provided on the uptown campus.
Students who paid for health insurance coverage for spring semester are automatically
covered for summer semester at no extra charge.
Complete information is available online at www.med.uc.edu/uhs. You may also call
513-556-6868 for information about our student health insurance.

About us
Clermont College
Fall Semester 2013
Fast facts
The UC Clermont College campus is located on 92 beautifully wooded acres, adjacent
to the Village of Batavia, in the center of Clermont County, Ohio. We serve residents of
Adams, Brown, Clermont, Hamilton, and Highland counties.
Our first building opened in 1972 with 281 students and 39 courses. Since then, we
have grown to seven buildings, serving about 4,000 students, offering over 50 degree,
certificate and transfer programs in a wide range of subjects---that’s nearly 500 courses!
As an open access campus, we admit everyone with a high school diploma or its
equivalent. Our rolling admission policy allows you to begin any semester: fall, spring
or summer. Because of class sequencing, some programs are best started in the fall.
Please call 513-732-5319 for details, especially if you are considering enrolling in
aviation, nursing or an allied health program.

(If you miss the turn on to Old St. Rt. 74, continue on St. Rt. 32-about 2 miles-and follow the green

From Points East on St. Rt. 32

(UC East occupies the site of the old Ford plant office building at 1981 James Sauls Sr. Drive, Batavia,
OH 45103, and can also be reached from Old 32. It’s about 6 miles between campuses--allow yourself
15-18 minutes travel time. Please note: Google and other internet sites may still refer to Front Wheel
