Peer Support Program
This is a program for Junior Medical Staff (JMS) support
provided by a trained group of JMS from a range of
programs & disciplines in all year levels who volunteer their
time to give something back to their Monash Health
colleagues.
The Peer Supporters provide an empathic ear to a Peer who
could be struggling with a personal, training, work, health or
other problem and helps them work through the problem
and arrive at practical options for resolving it. The outcome
of the interaction may be that the Peer is empowered to
address the issue or a referral is made to an appropriate
service for further management. So far we have trained 40
Peer Supporters who all received a 3-hour training session to
make them ready to offer Peer Support. These Peer
Supporters are supported in their role by 8 Coaches who are
senior doctors and nursing staff who have undergone 2-day
training.
To view the list of Peer Supporters, go to: http://monashdoctors.com/jms-peer-support-program/
Medical staff can contact the Peer Supporters directly and confidentially via the webpage, which provides contact details for each
Peer Supporter.

To help navigate the exciting, yet at times confronting,
transition from medical student to junior doctor is the
Monash Doctors Intern Mentoring Program.
Intern mentors are volunteers from the senior medical staff
at Monash Health. They take a special interest in the
professional development of junior doctors and provide
guidance & support.
Some things a mentor can help with include:
•
Career development & satisfaction
•
Workload & work/life balance
•
Personal/family issues
•
Professionalism
•
Staff interactions or conflict resolution
•
Communication issues
•
Clinical issues
Confidentiality is critical for the success of the mentoring
program. The mentors take this responsibility seriously and
will not share specific details of these discussions with
anyone else without permission except in exceptional
circumstances.
