Ergonomics is about designing for people, wherever they
interact with products, systems or processes. We usually
don’t notice good design (unless perhaps, it’s exceptional)
because it gives us no cause to, but we do notice poor
design.

At the Unique Group the emphasis within ergonomics
is to ensure that designs complement the strengths
and abilities of people and minimise the effects of
their limitations, rather than forcing them to adapt. In
achieving this aim, it becomes necessary to understand
and design for the variability represented in the
population, spanning such attributes as age, size,
strength, cognitive ability, prior experience, cultural
expectations and goals. Qualified ergonomists are the
only recognised professionals to have competency in
optimising performance, safety and comfort. The IEHF is
the only body in the UK managing and representing this
competency.
Understanding and embracing the technological and
information changes that face all departments is vital to
a successful project and we look forward to helping you

How to Choose Desk Accessories
Desk Layout
When sitting in the chair you should ensure that all equipment you commonly use
is placed within easy reach. Over stretching for items will cause strain especially
on the neck and lower back. If space is a premium consider placing equipment on
stands or arms. You should position the telephone close to the hand that you answer
the phone with. Consider the use of a headset if you spend a lot of time on the phone.

Ensure the keyboard is close to your body, but leave a gap between the edge of the
desk and the keyboard. Place the mouse close to the side of the keyboard. Placing
the mouse and keyboard too far away from your
body will promote poor posture. If you do not use
the number pad on the keyboard consider
switching to a mini keyboard as this will allow
you to bring your mouse closer which can reduce
muscle tension.
Using a Writing Slope

A writing slope allows you to raise work which
reduces the viewing distance. This helps you to
maintain an upright balanced posture which will
limit your body from leaning forwards. This will
reduce strain on your lower back, neck and eyes.
If writing is difficult, consider using an ergonomic
pen.
Position of Copyholders
Touch typists should position the copyholder next to and at the same height as
the monitor screen. For non touch typists a copyholder placed between the
keyboard and monitor is ideal (as pictured).
Many inline copyholders now combine a writing slope for extra usability. These
are a great step forward in ergonomics for workers who need to view their
computer even when writing.

Do not use a lap top flat on a desk as
this will encourage you to have poor
posture. Instead use a lap top stand to
raise the screen height with a separate
mouse and keyboard.
Position the monitor so that the top
of the visible screen is at eye level and
at arms length away. Users who are not
touch typists and need to view the keyboard as they type may want to lower
the screen slightly to avoid head dipping.
You should place your feet on the floor
or footrest with your hips slightly
higher than your knees. Make sure
there is little or no pressure on the
underside of your thighs.

zip fitted so that amendments can
be made both on delivery and in
