HOG WASh october 2011 O T T HE 2011 D E D A E H SPART Y L L A ANBURG HOG R spartanburg H.O.G. Chapter 4813 Road Rave Director’s Cut What a great month we have ahead of us! The Rally is sure to be another successful one filled with lots of fun. Please take the time to thank Keith Buchanan and all of the Rally Committee members for their time and dedication in putting this Rally together. Sandra Mattson Don’t forget to check your calDirector endar for upcoming day and overnight rides. Lewis Coureton is leading the ride to the Train museum this month and Gary Vanover is leading the Blue Ridge Parkway ride to name just a couple. The Halloween Party is scheduled for October 29th. Dennis and Sandra Millwood have graciously agreed to host us again this year. We will email directions to their home the week before the party. You may bring a treat (finger food) for all to share if you wish. We will be nominating new officers this month for next year and electing them in November. Gary Vanover will step up as Director and we will elect the other three (3) primary officers so if you are interested in an officer position, please let one of us know. I am really looking forward to the huge surprise retirement party that I know y’all have planned for me! I hope that each and every one of you enjoy the Rally and am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Halloween Party!!! Last month I wrote about Spartanburg HOG’s unwritten rules for group riding, and noted that there are really only two of them… Rule #1 Ride Safe. Rule #2 Have Fun. I also mentioned that there were riding courses available from the MotorGary Vanover cycle Safety Foundation that are specifiAssistant Director cally tailored to help folks at any experience level improve and/or brush up on their safe riding skills, and that I would provide more information in this month’s newsletter. So, here it is… Courses are offered in Spartanburg for the: - Beginner (never ridden a motorcycle - $239, motorcycle provided) - Intermediate (held a learner’s permit for 60+ days, with some riding experience- $139, your motorcycle) - Experienced (held a learner’s permit for 60+ days and have proof of successful completion of a previous motorcycle course OR have a valid motorcycle license - $79, your motorcycle) Check out South Carolina’s course offerings, including locations and schedules at: http://www.scridered.org As a HOG member benefit, you can get reimbursement for a portion of the course cost. From http://members.hog.com SAFE RIDER SKILLS PROGRAM RECEIVE TUITION REIMBURSEMENT OF UP TO $50 (IN THE FORM OF A H.O.G. COUPON) FOR THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF AN ACCREDITED MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION (MSF) RIDER TRAINING COURSE, including Rider’s Edge® courses in the United States. You will also receive a pin and patch featuring the “Safe Rider Skills” logo. So the experienced rider course costs you only $29 after tuition reimbursement. I’ve personally taken this course, and taken advantage of the reimbursement through HOG, and I would have to say it was a great $29 investment. In addition to the safe riding skills you will learn and/or reinforce, successful completion of the courses can potentially make you eligible for discounts with your insurance company. And if you’re still looking to turn your motorcycle permit into a full license, you may be able to have the DMV road test waived with proof of successful course completion! So check it out. No matter what your experience level is, you can always pick up something new, or simply practice what you may already know! HAVE A HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Sandra Riding Safe I think it’s good to say fall is upon us. I heard someone say last week they were missing the 90 degree days. Not me, I am welcoming the fall like temperatures. Now is a good time to enjoy some seasonal riding. I noticed on one of our rides last month as we were approaching a red Jerry Slagle light at an intersection, we would slow Safety down and anticipate the light to change green so we would not have to stop and put our foot down. This is ok to me, but be sure that when doing this there are no other vehicles coming into the same intersection from another direction, trying to beat the yellow light. Some drivers just don’t have good judgment or in most cases, they are in too much of a hurry. Ride Safe and hope to see everyone at the SC State Rally Jerry Wishing you fun & Safe riding! Gary Vanover Happy Halloween 2 Up to the Minute 7:01 pm- Sandra Mattson, called the meeting to order. Chapter Chaplin, James Price lead group in prayer and Pledge of Allegiance. Next Business Meeting will be held on Tuesday October 4th Will be nominating officers at the October meeting and electing them in November. Sandra and Dennis Millwood will be hosting a Halloween party for the chapter at their home. Costumes not required will be emailing directions for Halloween Party Reviewed current bank balance and expenses. ABC Ride will be October 2nd. Mike will wait rain or shine and if expecting bad weather will decide at that time to have a ride or not Luis C, stepped up for Website Goldie needs volunteers to help with Hot Rods & Harleys Brian Wofford, Membership Officer Reminded everyone to renew their membership. You know you have to do what I tell you! 3 Denise Robinson Secretary AWWW... Dee! Loose Change abc’s of Touring Financial Summary 9/20/11 September has brought us a lot of relief from those 100 degree days of summer. Michael Massengill And along with these cooler days comes ABC’s of Touring the opportunity to go out there and rack up some points in the ABC’s of Touring competition. By the time you read this we should have had our second and third organized rides for the ABC’s of Touring. I hope you were able to come out and join us. However, I want to remind you one more time that this competition is designed to be accomplished on your own. You only need 6 pictures of you with your bike. After you’ve accomplished that, you can shoot the picture yourself as long as it includes your bike, a current issue of HOG Tales and a legible, official sign in the background indicating your location. So whether you have joined us for one or more of these organized rides or have decided to go solo and do it all on your own, I hope you have racked up a ton of points. It’s worth noting that we have a local competition that will award a $100 gift certificate from the dealership to the individual with the largest number of points. In addition to that, each of you can earn a pin or patch or some other award by submitting your pictures and completed form to the National HOG organization as long as you have properly completed your application and have obtained the necessary points. It’s not too late to get started on this competition. All completed forms are to be turned in to me by the end of November for the final tally. I will return the forms in December, in time for you to mail them in to the National Organization and then we will announce the local winner at the yearend Christmas Party. Keep in mind that some of the best riding days will be upon us during the next two months. So get your camera, a current issue of HOG Tales, strap on those chaps and throw a leg over a Harley. I say that because REAL bikers ride when it’s 100 degrees outside and we have all been doing a lot of that lately. With that thought in mind, I am now taking great pleasure in wearing a jacket Michael Massengill when I ride these days and I’m sure you Lead Road Captain feel the same way. So let’s all plan on getting in as much riding time as possible before Old Man Frost comes to visit. With that thought in mind, I’d like to remind you that we are trying to plan as many weekend day rides as possible for October and November. Most Sunday’s we will have a Road Captain at the dealership with a day ride planned. You need to be at the dealership no later than 1:30, which should give you plenty of time to go to church and swallow a quick lunch. Please also remember to bring your helmet just in case the upcoming ride goes into NC or GA. We had a great day ride this past Sunday (Sept.18th) lead by Wayne & Kathy Hendrix. If you didn’t take advantage of that ride, you really missed a good one. We wound through some beautiful country side in the foot hills of Spartanburg and Greenville Counties. We’ll have a lot more rides like that in the days ahead. In addition to the Sunday rides, we have a number of Saturday day rides scheduled too. Please be sure to check your calendar for times and places to meet. All of us own Harleys and all of us love to ride. That’s the reason that we joined HOG. So let’s take advantage of the coming days of fall and get in as much riding time as is possible before the temps get too cold to be able to enjoy the wind in your face.
