DEGREES
OF SUCCESS
The future you’ve been dreaming
of starts here – discover how
you can take the first steps
towards your future.
DISCOVER MORE
This course guide will help you to discover
more about what UWS can offer you
and why you would want to be part of
the ‘UWS Degrees of Success’ story.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
As a UWS student, you’ll learn
from nationally and internationally
recognised researchers and lecturers
whose passion is teaching and
learning excellence. We want to
make sure you have the best possible
learning experience at UWS and
this is why we have designed and
implemented a range of opportunities
such as The Academy, Student
Exchange and industry-supported
practical internships which can all help
you to shape a successful future.
STUDENT CENTRED LEARNING
At UWS, we understand that
education is not only about what
you learn – but also about how
you learn. The quality of your
educational experience is a critical
factor which can significantly
affect your learning outcomes.
A DIFFERENT STYLE OF TEACHING
The teaching styles you will encounter at
UWS and the study skills required might
be very different from what you have been
used to in your home country. At UWS
‘rote’ learning (or memorising information)
is not the main method of teaching.
You will be required to understand and
apply concepts and theories, and to
critically examine and present a range of
arguments to support your decisions.
CLASS PARTICIPATION AND
UNDERSTANDING
You will be expected to participate
in class discussions and to question
your lecturers and tutors if you do
not understand what is being taught
and discussed. In Australia it is not
considered bad manners to express
views that are different from those
expressed by your teacher. In fact,
you will be encouraged to do so.
6 University of Western Sydney uws.edu.au/international
The University of Western Sydney
has a reputation for teaching and
learning excellence and we are
incredibly proud of this. We value
innovation and our student centred
learning strategy encourages our
teachers to incorporate flexible and
innovative learning techniques into
our courses. Technology is a critical
aspect of learning today and we
utilise online learning portals and
interactive classes which ensure that
your time spent with us prepares you
for work in the new digital world.
Gaining practical experience
is another key ingredient for
success in the workplace after
graduation and forms part of
most of our degree programs.
TEACHING AND LEARNING SUCCESS
Our lecturers are industry-trained
professionals whose goal is to
ensure you are career-ready when
you complete your degree. They
are also outstanding achievers in
their own fields, maintaining an
excellence in teaching that has
been recognised within and beyond
the University. In 2014, three UWS
academics were awarded with
prestigious Office of Learning and
Teaching (OLT) Citations for their
contributions to student learning.
Our lecturers want to see you achieve
your future success by giving you
the benefit of their experience.
uws.edu.au/awardsuccess
LECTURES AND TUTORIALS
You will be required to study a full load
of units (subjects) per teaching session.
Generally, study is undertaken on a
UWS campus involving a combination
of lectures and tutorials. You will be
required to attend many hours of classes
each week or you may be penalised
if you do not comply. You will also be
expected to spend a substantial amount
of unstructured time on individual
reading and research outside of class.
ASSESSMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Assessment methods vary from course
to course. To pass most subjects you
will be required to complete a number
of assessment tasks or assignments
during each session (semester). These
may include essays, research papers,
oral presentations, fieldwork, laboratory
practicals, mid-term and final exams. At
the beginning of each teaching session you
will be given an outline of these tasks and
assignments, including the ‘deadlines’ (final
dates) for completion. If you fail to meet
these deadlines you may be penalised even
though you have completed your work.
ATTENDANCE AND ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE
Attendance at class and submission
of required work is also a condition
of your student visa. The University
is required to report poor attendance
and poor academic performance
of student visa holders to the
Department of Immigration and
Border Protection (DIBP).
APPLE IPAD
INITIATIVE
We understand that
technology is vital
in today’s world and
that is why, in 2015,
UWS will provide all
new commencing
undergraduate
students* with an
Apple iPad which
will enable them to
engage in learning
anytime, anywhere.

UWS is an excellent campus; it is a nurturing place to study with a wide range of
modern academic facilities. Its location and access to public transport in greater
Sydney are also of advantage. Food outlets and cafes are available in every campus
with many food varieties. I have been actively involved in campus leisure activities
through the UWSConnect programs. UWS also provides students with on campus
accommodation that is UWSVillage where I spent the first six months in Australia; it
was convenient student accommodation that I highly recommend to new students.

INTERNATIONALLY
RECOGNISED
RESEARCH
The University of Western
Sydney nurtures a
distinctive, high impact
research culture. The
quality of our research
has resulted in 36 areas
being listed as ‘at or
above world standard’
in the Excellence in
Research Australia (ERA)
exercise. This includes
five-star rankings for
‘evidence of outstanding
performance well above
world standard.’
Boasting four research institutes,
UWS is attracting international,
national and local interest.
The Hawkesbury Institute for the
Environment (HIE) is a multimillion
dollar research institute dedicated to
investigating the impact of climate
change on native trees and forests.
At the MARCS Institute, researchers
examine, explain and enhance
human-human and humanmachine communication through
behavioural, neuroscience, and
computational investigations.
The Institute for Culture and Society
(ICS) builds on the proven track record
of the Centre for Cultural Research
(CCR), carrying out research on the
transformations in culture and society in the
context of contemporary global change.
The Institute for Infrastructure Engineering
(IIE) is building on the work of the Civionics
Research Centre (CRC), promoting the
concept of ‘Smart Engineering’, which
has developed through research into
smart structures and smart materials.
UWS also hosts the National Institute of
Complementary Medicine (NICM). Funded
by the University, industry partners,
philanthropy, and research grants and
contracts, NICM conducts clinical and
laboratory research to close the gap
between our use of complementary
medicines and our understanding
and knowledge of how they work.
HAWKESBURY
INSTITUTE FOR THE
ENVIRONMENT
Growing more food and fibre for
an expanding population is a major
challenge for Australia as we face a
changing climate and competition
for land and water resources. The
Hawkesbury Institute’s team of
scientists are meeting this challenge
by discovering how crops, grasslands
and forests and the animals that
live in them are responding to
environmental and land use change.
Equipped with leading-edge facilities,
the Hawkesbury Institute is the ideal
environment for researching our
managed and natural ecosystems. For
example, an ‘ecological time machine’
that uses a gigantic structure over
an intact mature forest ecosystem is
providing a look into a future, high CO2
world. This EucFACE experiment allows
scientists to study the response to high
CO2 of the entire forest ecosystem.
Research at the Hawkesbury Institute
is having a global impact and our
scientists are renowned for their work

Two areas of specialisation,
plant biology and forestry
sciences, within the Institute
were characterised in ERA as
‘of outstanding performance’
and received the highest
possible rating of ‘5’.
INSTITUTE FOR
CULTURE AND SOCIETY
The way we live is changing at an
unprecedented speed. Economic instability,
rapid developments in technology, and
environmental crises are just some of the
major global trends, which will transform
culture and society in the years to come.
WS is undertaking research to help
U
us understand, interpret and meet
the challenges of this changing social
landscape. Based at Parramatta campus,
the Institute champions inter-disciplinary,
engaged and collaborative scholarship in
the humanities, arts and social sciences.
in ecology, forestry, and plant, animal
and soil sciences. The Excellence in
Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation
ranked the Institute’s research well
above world standard (highest possible

MARCS INSTITUTE
At the MARCS Institute for brain,
behaviour and development,
we study the scientific basis
of human communication.
Our interdisciplinary team from
psychology, engineering, linguistics,
neuroscience, and computer
science links the power of social and
biological science research methods
to investigate factors influencing
perceptual, cognitive, creative and
social skills from infancy to adulthood,
in real and virtual worlds, in normal,
heightened and degraded contexts,
within and across different cultures.
MARCS Institute research on
brain, behaviour and development
encompasses such areas as how we
learn language and handle foreign
accents, how to program robots
for human interaction, how we can
enhance communication with infants,
those with hearing impairments,
and the elderly, and how music and
dance communicate universally.
We apply our work to advanced
technology, biomedical engineering,
and improving physical and mental
health by designing electronics
inspired by neural systems, building
better biomedical devices, analysing
heightened performance in the
creative arts, and addressing impaired
performance in developmental
delay and sensory deficit.

Research Council Centre
of Excellence for the
Dynamics of Language.
INSTITUTE FOR
INFRASTRUCTURE
ENGINEERING
A rapidly developing world needs safe,
reliable infrastructure systems such as
bridges, buildings, dams, roads and
pipe networks. Engineers are tapping
into today’s advanced technology to
constantly improve the performance
of existing and new infrastructure.
The Institute is expanding the field
of engineering research beyond
civil and electronic engineering to
consider all aspects of the analysis,
assessment, design, maintenance
and repair of infrastructure, including

1.Clinical research to validate the
efficacy and safety of complementary
medicines and therapies.
NATIONAL INSTITUTE
OF COMPLEMENTARY
MEDICINE
2.Pre-clinical laboratory research on
the identification, bioactivity and
mechanisms of action of herbal
medicines and herb-drug interactions.
Local and international demand for
complementary medicine products is
growing at unprecedented rates . Over
80% of the world’s population and two
out of three Australians use some form of
complementary medicine. Australian annual
expenditure is close to $3.8 billion and
growing. Yet this use often occurs without
a full understanding of the effectiveness of
complementary medicine treatments. Many
complementary medicines offer a wealth
of potential healthcare solutions, backed
by hundreds of years of clinical use.
NICM’s research program focuses on the
safety, efficacy and use of complementary
medicine, and employs a diverse range
of disciplines to investigate these issues.
Scientific research into the clinical
efficacy, safety, mechanisms of action
and economic value of complementary
medicine is a relatively new academic
endeavour. It spans the biomedical, clinical,
social, economic and public health fields,
creating a vibrant, interdisciplinary context.
Drawing on its legacy of traditional
knowledge, NICM’s research program
investigates the breadth of interrelated
issues in complementary medicine from
the broad social research perspective
to detailed analysis of the chemical
constituents and molecular effects of
herbal medicines. It addresses the
national research priorities of preventative
healthcare and aged care, and its
activities fall into three streams:
3.Health policy research on issues
such as safety, industry regulation,
service provision and integration of
complementary medicine, health policy
development through federal and state
government agencies, development of
clinical practice guidelines, economic
analyses of complementary medicine
usage, and database development,
including the Chinese Herbal
Medicine Toxicology Database.
NICM’s world class research team provides
leadership in clinical research, with a track
record for completing high quality trials
that have been published in the world’s
leading medical journals. International
collaborations provide access to the
world’s leading clinical experts and facilities.
Complementary medicine research at the
University of Western Sydney was ranked
in ERA as ‘well above world standard’, and
received the highest possible rating of ‘5’.

PREPARING TO
STUDY AT UWS
Sydney is a large
cosmopolitan city in which you
can buy everything you need.
However, you are advised to
bring some items with you to
Australia because many items
may be more expensive here
than in your home country.
WHAT TO
BRING WITH
YOU TO
AUSTRALIA
»» Some students choose to bring larger
electrical appliances such as rice
cookers. These items are widely available
in Australia but may be more expensive
than your home country. Note: Australia
uses 240 volt AC 50 hertz electricity and
three-pin plugs to access power points.
»» Accommodation does not include
linen or blankets. A sleeping bag may
be useful the first few nights until you
have a chance to purchase items.
»» Australia has strict customs laws. It
is illegal to bring many items, such
as food of any description, including
herbal medicines, into Australia.
»» As it can often take some time for
money to be transferred from your
home country to Australia, bring enough
money to cover your expenses for
the first few weeks. Foreign currency
can be exchanged for Australian
dollars at Sydney Airport. If you arrive
on a weekend (Saturday/ Sunday)
and do not change some currency
at the airport, you may not be able
to change it until the next working
day. If you want to use cash, you
may only use Australian currency.
»» Bring some lightweight items from home
to make your new place feel like home

WORKING IN AUSTRALIA
As an international student you may work
up to 40 hours a fortnight during each
study session (semester) and unlimited
hours when your course is not in session.
Permission to work will automatically be
included in your student visa. Although
you are able to work in Australia, you
cannot rely on that income to fund
your tuition fees or living costs for the
duration of your stay in Australia.
Many international students choose to
work part-time during their studies, but it is
unrealistic to expect that you will find parttime work as soon as you begin looking
for it. You will first need to become familiar
with the city and the areas where part-time
employment is available. It is also important
to understand your study obligations before
you commit yourself to part-time work.

OF MY STUDENT VISA?
Student visas and temporary entry permits
usually last for the period of your course.
You must uphold your visa conditions while
studying and living in Australia or your visa
may be cancelled and you may have to
leave Australia. The University is obliged
to report any student to Department of
Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP)
who does not attend class, or who is
not making satisfactory progress in their
studies. You will also be required to keep
the University informed of any changes
to your residential and mailing addresses.
You must also maintain enough money to

participates in the DIBP Streamlined
Visa Processing arrangement. This
means when you apply for a student
visa with a Confirmation of Enrolment
for an eligible course at UWS (Bachelor,
Master or Doctoral level) your application
will be assessed as a lower migration
risk, regardless of country of origin.
