OTC Branding Project
Makes Major Progress
by Jim Williams
Marketing Committee Chair
A major priority of the Marketing Committee has been to leverage the storied past
of the Oregon Track Club as it continues to
evolve as a champion for Track & Field for
the University of Oregon and throughout
the United States. During the past few years
we’ve gone through a branding process that
includes updating the OTC logo and how we
present the Club through all media venues
and events.
An important goal of our committee was
to dispel the stereotype that the OTC was
only for serious runners and track and field
athletes. The reality is out of our approximately 2000 members we have an amazing
cross-section of individuals, many of whom
do not fit the stereotype. The Oregon Track
Club is truly for everyone and its success is
because of the diversity of interests that
bring people to join. Volunteers to help at
events, walkers, joggers, fitness buffs, parents and grandparents of children who run
at school and OTC All-Comers’ Meets, track
and field fans. The list of who belongs to OTC
goes on and on. It is with that spirit we have
developed a number of new branding materials you will see at the OTC Butte to Butte
race and all other events in the future.
Thanks to the wonderful support of OTC
Board member, Chris Meeker, owner of Imagine Group here in Eugene, we will have our
new logo and tagline “It’s for Everyone” at
all OTC-sponsored events to include the
aforementioned Butte to Butte, Mayor’s
The updated OTC logo and tagline will appear on
several new marketing support items, like a new
event tent.
Walk, Prefontaine Classic, Hayward Classic,
All-Comers’ Meets as well as other events
where OTC is a sponsor. The logo will appear
on banners, pop-up membership tents, pace
signs and mile markers, as appropriate.
This is just a start as we continue to share
the legacy of the Oregon Track Club and inform the greater community how it can support this exciting organization. Stay tuned
for more progress.
All-Comers’ Meets,
The Tradition Continues
OTC is very proud to continue the All-Comers’
Meets at Hayward Field this July and August for
a total of 10 meets. Originated in the 1940s by
Bill Bowerman, Bob Newland devised the current format for youth and adults in 1958. These
meets are an inspirational cornerstone of Oregon Track Club and beloved by track and field

First Call: Summer Months
Bring the All-Comers’ Meets
by Erin Regali, OTC President
As June comes to a
close, I look back upon
an exceptional Pre Classic with such beautiful weather and thrilling
competition that filled
the day. Then on to the
NCAA Championship meet
held at Hayward Field in early June…the event
brought exciting team competition, dedicated
officials and volunteers and outstanding community support for all 4 days of competition.
Hats off to all event organizers for their part
in making these great events so spectacular!
June was a very busy month of Track & Field.
Oregon Track Club proudly prepares for a
busy summer ahead of community events. We
begin with the Aquafina Butte to Butte race
on July 4th and then on to the All-Comers’
Meets on July 10/11, 17/18, 24/25, July 31/August 1 and August 7/8. All meets will be held
at Hayward Field this summer. The All-Comers’ Meets are a great community service and
have a long history of success.
This year’s dynamic duo for the summer
meet series are Jill Mestler and Sarah Lloyd.
Jill serves as our meet director; she brings
great leadership and passion to these meets
and the youth in our community. New this
year, Sarah fills the role as volunteer coordinator. Welcome Sarah!
Each Wednesday evening 400-600 youngsters 12 years of age and under run, jump and
throw. Thursday evenings have 300+ athletes
13 and older who participate. During the years
so many families in our community have experienced the All-Comers’ Meets and have
cheered their loved ones on to victory. I have
very fond memories of my daughters running
the 60 meter dash and jumping into the sand.
Earning that special ribbon for their efforts
always made the evening a huge success. Because of the committed volunteers all ages
are able to compete to their highest potential. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers
over the years that have served all ages, truly
making it a very positive experience for all!
Each month as I think about the wonderful acts of kindness that so many volunteers
provide to the sport of track and field it truly
amazes me. The All-Comers’ Meets are fun and
open to all kinds of athletes. It is a great introduction to Track and Field for families in a
fun-style atmosphere. We hope to see you at
the track this summer!

Kids and the NCAA,
A Lifetime Experience
by Kimberly McManus
Participants were not deterred by the weather at a
Hershey’s Track and Field Meet held this school year.
OTC, Hershey
Partner for Kids’ Track
by Kimberly McManus
So, what is better than chocolate? The answer: the partnerships that combined to create opportunities for more than
2000 youth to run, jump and throw! For more than 25 years,
the City of Eugene and River Road Park/Recreation have offered the Hershey’s Track and Field Games, which provides
softball throw, standing long jump and a variety of running
events in a fun and competitive environment. Winners from
local meets are invited to compete at the State Meet at Hayward Field and those who win events there are placed in consideration for a regional team that travels to Hershey, PA for
the National Meet. At least five kids travel from Oregon each
year.
Dwindling resources have made the continuation of these
meets almost impossible…but not impossible for Track Town!
With the financial help of Pacific Source Health Plans, the
volunteer resources of Oregon Track Club, the partnering with
Bethel and 4J schools and our successful application for a
USATF Foundation grant, these meets continued this year.
While the Hershey Company provides the infrastructure for
the meet, transportation assistance and volunteer support
are critical components. The partnership made this series of
9 meets possible.
The state meet is set for July 6 at Hayward Field. If you
are interested in volunteering (track experience not required and youth can also help), please contact Kim McManus, Kimberly.k.mcmanus@ci.eugene.or.us, to join in the fun,
receive a Hershey’s shirt and lunch. Chocolate is definitely
provided!!

The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships were held
at Hayward Field in June. Lots of kids got to experience this
exciting college sporting event.
FACT: 1100+ middle school youth watched the NCAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships in Eugene.
FACT: Youth from Springfield, Portland, Bethel, 4J and Columbia, South America, joined together to see success with
their own eyes.
FACT: 15 bus loads of youth pulled into Matthew Knight Arena to hear from Olympians on the importance of Winning with
Integrity, including:
• Paula Berry - Javelin - 1992
• Amy Begley - 10,000 meters - 2008
• Jill Camerena-Williams - Shot Put - 2008, 2012
• Ashton Eaton - Decathlon - 2012

FACT: The celebration of the Olympians and the experience
at Hayward Field, created life-changing moments.
FACT: None of this would have been possible without the
generosity and kindness of Bob and Mary Anne Woodell. Not
only could you see the mass of youth coming into the Hayward east grandstands, but you could feel their energy and
hear their cheers for every athlete. We sincerely thank the
Woodell’s for recognizing the importance of empowering
youth through once-in-a-lifetime experiences and giving so
much to make this experience unforgettable!

Vin’s Track Town: Outstanding NCAA
Champs Highlight a Great Outdoor Season
by Vin Lananna
More than 1065 student athletes along
with their coaches, trainers, managers and
administrators from more than 210 Division I
Colleges and Universities were provided four
outstanding days of track & field at Historic
Hayward Field. From great accommodations,
practice and team areas and hospitality offerings, we took care of them every step of
the way.
With more than 150 local officials providing
a fair, safe and world class competitive environment, an average daily high of 83 degrees
and the supportive and knowledgeable TrackTown USA fans behind them, the student
athletes filled a daily highlight reel of outstanding performances. The fans who were a
part of the announced four-day attendance
of 40,446 and a standing-room only crowd of
11,482 on Saturday were treated to some of
the best performances in the world this year.
Of course, the stars of the show were the
great student athletes from the University
of Oregon whose relentless pursuit of excellence was in evidence throughout the four
days of competition, and ultimately led to
three individual national champions in Mac
Fleet, Elijah Greer and English Gardner. The
Oregon coaching staff did a wonderful job in
preparing the athletes for a myriad of events.
And in true TrackTown style, we had more
great events to surround the competition.
Thanks to a generous gift from Bob & Mary
Anne Woodell and the efforts of Kim McManus and the city of Eugene, more than 1,100
energetic and enthusiastic children attended the meet on Thursday. Not only were they
treated to a special track & field experience,
they also attended Olympic Day at Matthew
Knight Arena featuring Olympians and a
unique interaction for some new fans to the
sport.
The Oregon Track & Field Alumni Homecom-
ing on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena
was a great success, thanks to the tireless
efforts of the 2013 Alumni Committee of
Wendy Hollister, John Lucas, Sig Ohlemann
and Scott Daggatt. It was a night for renewing friendships and forging new ones and of
great tales and memorable stories from many
generations of Historic Hayward Field alumni.
In the fan interactive zone spectators were
treated to the past, present and future of our
sport and our iconic venue. From autographs
and buttons and flag making to revisiting the
great moments of the past championships,
from celebrating previous champions to our
mission for youth, community and sustainability and from new technology to a new
twist with a Bruce Hornsby concert on Saturday morning, there was something to engage
fans of all ages.
And of course it was the energy and efforts
of our volunteers and partners that made the
difference. From the leadership of the OTC to
every member that took part in the championships, I thank you for your continued support of these memorable competitions and
events. Your involvement in the planning,
coordination and execution of our events is
a key ingredient to our successful hosting of
the NCAA Championships.
The leadership of the NCAA, their staff and
outdoor track and field committee members
shared an abundance of superlatives regarding our hosting of their championships, and
they are thrilled to be returning in 2014. I look
forward to seeing each and every one of you
during the summer and sharing my personal
thanks for your work during the entire 2013
outdoor track and field season. I hope you
had great fun and satisfaction to go along
with your hard work on behalf of the sport.
The success of the entire weekend would
not have been possible without the OTC and
TrackTown Community.
Vin Lananna is the Associate Athletic
Director at the University of Oregon.

In Memory
Berny Wagner, head coach of Oregon State’s track and
field and cross country teams from 1965-75, passed away
at the age of 88 on May 27. Wagner developed 25 All-Americans in 12 different events at OSU, including Dick Fosbury
who revolutionized the high jump by introducing the “Fosbury Flop.” His OSU men’s track teams finished in the top 10
at the NCAA Championships four times, including a tie for
third in 1969. He was named U.S. Track Coaches Association
Coach of the Year in 1972.
Berny was also an assistant coach of the 1976 U.S. Olympic
team, coach of the Saudi Arabian national team from 197678, executive director for the Track & Field Association of
the USA from 1978-81 and national coach/coordinator of The
Athletic Congress from 1981-89. After his retirement, Wagner worked as a volunteer high jump coach at Western Oregon University where he had three national champions and
15 All-Americans. Coach Wagner was inducted into the OSU
Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993 and the U.S. Track & Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002.
Best Pre Ever? It’s Got My Vote
by Tom Jordan, Prefontaine Meet Director
Incredible athletes, amazing performances, nearly ideal weather,
and a packed house. The 2013 Prefontaine Classic will go into the
books as perhaps the best-ever in the 39 year history of the meet.
• 47 medal winners from London competed at the Pre Classic,
in many cases all 3 medalists in the event (or in the instance of
the men’s HJ, which had three bronze medalists, all 5 medalists
competed).
• 10 world-leading performances, including 7-10 ½ in the high
jump (has any athlete ever shown more joy at winning than Mutaz Essa Barshim?), 19-6 ¼ in the pole vault by Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie, 1:56.72 in the women’s 800m by Hellen
Obiri, and let’s not forget the first-ever sub-2 minute 800m
by an American prep athlete, the 1:59.51 U.S. Junior record by
17-year-old delight, Mary Cain.
• A sell-out crowd of 12,816 who once again proved that the
most knowledgeable and appreciative fans in the world attend
the Prefontaine Classic.
What’s next? The 40th Prefontaine Classic, May 30-31, 2014.
Many thanks to: Erin Regali, Phil Sutton, Bill Kelly, Kari Westlund, Jill Steele, Jill Mestler, Jody Smith, John Lucas, David Wilkins for contributing to this
