Great Expectations Interactive Oral Presentation
Assignment: Your final summative assessment for Great Expectations will be an interactive oral group
presentation. Your group will present on a cultural topic and provide appropriate contextual connections. Your presentation must:
•
educate your classmates on the topic assigned.
•
involve all group members in the preparation and presentation.
•
actively involve the whole class in the learning.
!
Specifics:
Group Presentation: Weight: 30 summative points (see rubric) !
Duration: 15 min. Written Response:
After each presentation, you will be asked to write a 150-250 word reflection based on the following
question: How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral? Each piece of reflective writing will be worth 10 points. When it is
time to write the first reflective statement, I will provide you with a rubric.
!
Topics
1. Charles Dickens (biography and authorial intent)
2. The Industrial Revolution (its effects on social and cultural changes)
3. Dress and etiquette for men and women, courtship and marriage customs, and entertainment
4. Education for poor and wealthy, medical issues (disease, sanitation), and living conditions in the
country and city (wages, life expectancy, types of housing)
5. Labor: London jobs, rural jobs, child labor (workhouses, working conditions, laws to control child
labor)
6. Transportation (public coaches, railroad, etc.)
7. Religion and moral values
Preparation for the oral presentation:
When students are given their topics for presentation it will be their responsibility to:
o
Select appropriate material for the presentation
o
Organize the material into a coherent structure
o
Choose a means of presentation and delivery that is suited to the activity and topic
Tips:
Make sure there is a balance between the cultural and contextual. You need to tie your topic to
the book through the use of quotations. Select the most appropriate quotes to demonstrate this
connection. Stay away from plot summary. !
!
Make sure that you fulfill the criteria listed on the Assessment sheet (rubric).
Rehearse your presentation again and again and time it. You should sound confident, face the audience, make sure to make eye contact throughout the presentation. Notes should only be lightly referred
to and not read the whole way through. You should sound interested in your own speech – vary tone
and gesture. Avoid being too technological, though simple visual aids and props can be helpful. PowerPoint presentations should be there to refer to and not to rely on. You must fulfill time requirements
or you will be penalized.
!
Prepare for questions. You may be asked questions at the end of your presentation, so make sure that
you come up with a list of possible questions you might be asked and think about the answers.
