Pacific islands. Betel (or areca)
nut, the large seed of an Asian
palm tree Areca catechu, is
wrapped in the leaf of the betel
pepper tree, Piper betle, to which
is added a pinch of burnt lime and
flavorings. In contact with saliva,
the mixture releases arecoline, an
anticholinergic CNS stimulant,
somewhat similar to nicotine.

including cancer.
