Seth Vilensky Named
President and CEO of Montefiore
Seth Vilensky has been named
president and CEO of Montefiore and
has assumed professional leadership
of the healthcare organization – which
provides a continuum of services to
seniors in Northeast Ohio – on April 13,
2015. For the past eight years, Seth has
worked at Cleveland Clinic, most recently
as administrative director for the Center
for Connected Care. In that capacity, he
oversaw operations and strategy for the
health system’s homecare, transitional
care, skilled care and hospice. He also
played a key role in the Clinic’s post-acute
care planning and development of its
“value-based care” model.
Seth has a deep commitment
to seniors and brings over 15 years
of healthcare experience to the
position. His strong clinical background
and understanding of the complex
healthcare landscape will help position
Montefiore for the future and enable the
organization to continue to navigate a
rapidly evolving healthcare environment.
In accepting his position, Seth said,
“I am honored to serve this amazing
organization and will continue to
build on what Lauren and her team
have accomplished. I plan to leverage
my relationships and experience in
developing partnerships throughout
the industry, as well as my passion for
caring for older adults in the community,
to keep Montefiore at the forefront
in delivering world-class care for our
patients, residents and families.”
At the Clinic, Seth was also involved
in creating numerous programs aimed
at improving care for patients as they
transition from hospital to communitybased settings. Among them was the
Skilled Nursing Facility Connected Care
Program, which selected Montefiore
as one of four partner facilities on the
East Side. The new model of care was
aimed at improving patient experience
and clinical outcomes for patients
transitioning from hospitals to skilled
nursing facilities.
He is recognized for numerous
articles and presentations including,
in June 2014, a presentation to White
House staff on Innovative Care and
Service Models at an Association
of Jewish Aging Services forum in
Washington.
Seth earned a Bachelor of Business
Administration degree from the
University of Michigan and a Master
of Business Administration degree
with an emphasis on health industry
management from the Kellogg School of
Management, Northwestern University.
Before joining Cleveland Clinic, he
worked in healthcare consulting at ZS
Associates in Chicago and London.
Seth and his wife Emily have two
children, Ariel and Eli, and reside in
Solon.

Message from Seth Vilensky
President and CEO
MY FIRST SIXTY DAYS!
I have just celebrated my
nearly two month anniversary at
Montefiore and want to thank
the entire Montefiore family for
welcoming me with open arms.
I have truly loved these past
couple months and am honored
to serve as your new president and CEO. I have
learned a lot about this great organization. A
few highlights include:
• Montefiore residents are amazing people – I
have learned so much by meeting our great
residents and their families.
• We have very committed staff and volunteers
– I enjoy interacting on a daily basis with all
of the dedicated employees, volunteers and
board members at Montefiore.
• We all care deeply about this organization
and are committed to its success.
We know there are challenges that we
face in the current healthcare environment. In
the future, organizations like Montefiore that
deliver care will be measured and judged on
the Experience of Care – how do patients and
families feel about the care experience they
receive at Montefiore? This shift has already
happened in the hospital setting and will be a
central theme of healthcare moving forward.
In fact, our future reimbursements will
be dependent on our customers’ experience.
We have always prided ourselves on the high
quality of care we provide – now the focus will
be on providing a superior experience of care
to our residents, patients and families. To that
end, listed below are a few key initiatives we
are working on to create a superior experience
at Montefiore:
1) Creation of a Montefiore Experience Team
Senior staff members (physicians, nurses and
management) are collaborating to develop
initiatives, track outcomes and develop
improvement plans around the Experience
of Care.
2) CARE Customer Service Training
With the generous support of the Montefiore
Volunteer Partners (MVP), we are rolling out
a new customer service training program for
all Montefiore employees and volunteers.
Modeled after work done in the hospital
sector, this program will focus on empathy,
communication and problem-solving.
3) Above and Beyond program
Also supported by our generous MVP
members, a new employee recognition
program will roll out this summer aimed at
recognizing our excellent employees who go
‘above and beyond’ to provide great service
and support to our residents and families.
I look forward to continuing to serve
you and working together to enhance the
Montefiore Experience.
Best regards,
VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT
Volunteers Warm Our Heart
by Diane Weiner, volunteer manager / 216.910.2741
Every year, Montefiore and The Weils
host a luncheon to honor and thank its
dedicated volunteers who help make a
difference in the lives of our residents.
This year’s message, Volunteers Warm Our
Hearts, was delivered to more than 90
attendees and focused on the generous
work volunteers do for residents, patients,
staff and family members. We value each
of our volunteers and recognize their
great contributions. It has been an annual
tradition since 1969.
The Bea Bernstein 2014 Volunteer
of the Year Award (named after former
Volunteer Director Millie Klein’s sister) is
presented to an individual who exemplifies
the characteristics of an outstanding
volunteer by continually demonstrating
exceptional commitment, devotion, loyalty
and dependability enhancing the lives of
Montefiore residents. This year’s recipient,
Cal Cohen is a prime example of making
staff and volunteers feel good. Every week
for the past 16 years, Cal worked quietly
behind the scenes on the financial reports
for the Montefiore Volunteer Partners.
This information is vital for the operations
of the MVPs (previously known as the
Auxiliary). Because of his work, the MVPs
are able to create valuable programming
that benefits our residents.
Sarah Braun, activities and volunteer
coordinator for The Weils, presented
Richard Ostendorf with The Weils 2014

in Spain. After his talk, he was introduced
to a resident who was in need of
companionship. Ever since this encounter,
the two meet weekly to play scrabble and
share stories together.
The Montefiore Staff Appreciation
award is nominated by volunteers to
recognize an employee for going above
and beyond to direct the volunteer with
their responsibilities while making the
volunteer feel welcome and appreciated.
This year’s Montefiore Staff 2014
Appreciation Award was presented to
Isaiah Hill, hospitality specialist. Isaiah
works with the CEVEC students to help
develop job skills but he does more than
just show them how to do it. He shares his
passion for being a role model for young
people and encourages students to make
healthy and responsible choices.
Micah Carter received The Weils 2014
Staff Appreciation Award. Micah has
worked in dietary at The Weils for 10 years.
He works with students from Geauga
County Educational Service Center to teach
them vocational skills and mentor them.
In his acceptance speech, Micah said that
he teaches the volunteers that “no matter
how bad your day is, someone else may be
having a worse day. You never know why
people are upset so treat everyone with
care and compassion.”
Please help us congratulate all of
these deserving individuals, and thank you
to all our volunteers who give from the
heart. Your warmth touches us all!

MESSAGE FROM
RABBI JOEL CHAZIN
THE POWER OF CELEBRATION
The warm weather is so
welcoming. For centuries,
peoples around the world
celebrated this time of year with
“Mid-Summer Night” or day
celebrations. Women collected
greens, decorated homes and
doors, and bonfires were lit so people could
enjoy or in fact, stay up for the night. It was at
this time that “maypole” dancing and festivity
took place – postponed till June in Northern
Europe because the weather was still not warm
enough and to celebrate the “mid-summer”
solstice.
In Scandinavian countries, these days are
national holidays – the warmth of summer and
the sprouting of flowers, greens and crops are
so appreciated.
But celebration is instinctive and
indigenous to all peoples – including ours. The
beauty of celebration is that it is so inclusive.
Everyone is equal, regardless of wealth or
status. All can take part, feel welcomed, join in
and enjoy.
One great thinker- Abraham Joshua
Heschel – expressed it this way:
“To celebrate is to share in a greater joy…
in acts of consumption, we please our own
selves; in acts of celebration, we extol the spirit,
the source of blessing – something larger than
our lone selves.”
“The mind is in search of knowledge,
the soul in quest of celebration. The meaning
of existence is experienced in moments of
celebration and exaltation. Man must strive for
the summit in order to exist on the ground.”
Celebration takes us out of ourselves, our
concerns, our daily worries. Celebration brings
us together, prompts us to consider how lucky
we are…to have those we love…to be alive.
In just a short time, we will celebrate Rosh
Hashanah, the beginning of the year, the Book
of Life…not a task, a blessing.
As I write this, Montefiore has just
celebrated two beautiful occasions. On
Thursday, April 30, we held a wonderful
Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, which
offered all of us an opportunity to thank those
who give of their time so freely, our volunteers
and our Montefiore Volunteer Partners, who
provide vital help to our residents and support
all that we strive for.
On Sunday, May 3, we celebrated a very
special farewell for Lauren Rock, our outgoing
president & CEO, at a truly heartwarming
tribute brunch – Montefiore, Memories and
Mimosas. It was a gathering that was filled
with warmth, congratulations to Lauren and
an event that showed the outstanding spirit
that residents, staff and leadership have
created for our Home and organization. It truly
was a morning/afternoon to remember and
celebrate.

Montefiore Launches In-Home
Memory Care Program
Continuing its 133-year history of
providing health and wellness services
to aging seniors, Montefiore is pleased
to announce the launch of a new InHome Memory Care program designed
to provide care navigation and support
to community members with memory
impairment. Montefiore’s new in-home
memory care program is designed to
provide quality memory care services
at home so individuals may live as
independently in their residence for as
long as possible.
This innovative program meets
a critical service gap for persons with
early- to mid-stage dementia who often
enter assisted living or long-term care
facilities prematurely because of the
lack of in-home support services. The
in-home memory care program focuses
on needs identification, care planning,
referral sources, community connections,
linkage to services and care monitoring.
Our staff will also help identify when
individuals can no longer safely remain in
their home and support them and their
families through a care facility transition.
Montefiore has assembled a kind,
caring and compassionate team of
dementia experts to help a loved one
receive needed support and care. Our
specially trained staff members recognize
the individuals behind the diagnosis and
their desire for a high quality of life.
Our care providers offer a coordinated
approach to those with memory
impairment and are there to ease the
burden and stress of decision-making
on family, caregivers and loved ones.
Together, the goal is to ensure the safety
and overall well-being of a loved one
with dementia.
We’re here to help you get started.
Contact us directly and we’ll take care of
the rest. Call our team at 216.910.2380 to
schedule your loved one’s comprehensive
assessment.
Special thanks to the foundations
and individual donors who have
generously provided the funding to
launch and help sustain Montefiore’s
in-home memory care program.

Meet THE Team
We are very excited to welcome back Awilda Nocero, RN, BSN, as
Nurse Manager for Myers 2. She previously worked 12 years as a
nursing supervisor and nurse manager at Montefiore. Awilda brings
a wealth of clinical nursing experience having served in management
positions with HCR ManorCare Health Services in Willoughby,
Altercare of Mayfield Village and Altercare of Mentor. She has also
worked as a skilled care coordinator at University Hospitals Hanna
House Skilled Nursing Facility.
We are pleased to announce that Lucy Mullins, PT, is Montefiore’s
new Rehab Director for the Therapy Department. Lucy has been
a valued employee at Montefiore for 7 years and will continue to
positively impact the facility with our partnership with HealthPro.
We look forward to Lucy and the Montefiore Therapy Team as they
continue providing a great patient experience for all Montefiore
patients and families.
We are happy to welcome Kerry Kertesz as our newest Development
Associate. As a member of the Foundation team, Kerry will be
responsible for increasing our annual campaign, broadening our
reach into the community and supporting our continued efforts to
enhance the overall experience of our donors. Kerry brings great
strengths as a fundraiser as well as extensive contacts as a result of
her years of commitment to our community.

Message from Lauren B. Rock
Outgoing President and CEO
Dear Friends,
As I write this letter I am
filled with an overwhelming
sense of gratitude for the
opportunities I have had to
make a difference over the
last 35 years. My career has
been an incredible journey with people
and organizations that believed in me and
supported my ability to lead, innovate and
create. I have had the opportunity to learn
from great mentors both in the lay and
professional communities and to them I am
forever grateful.
Healthcare is a unique field. As a
professional, we can never just “turn off the
lights” as they are always on 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. It is our responsibility to
be tuned in all the time. It is a passion and a
calling to be so fully invested in one’s work,
especially when in one’s own community
where the connections run deep and broad.
It is our responsibility as leaders to seek
out ways to improve care and service and
better meet our patients’, residents’ and
families’ needs and to create an environment
that is comfortable, warm and welcoming. We
also have a responsibility to our employees to
provide the tools, training and education to
deliver the best possible service and care that
they can.
It has been a privilege to serve the
broader community as well as the Jewish
community, of which I have been a part of my
entire life. It has afforded me the opportunity
to meet amazing leaders and philanthropists,
those that have supported me and have
allowed me an opportunity to support them.
How lucky am I!
Who knows what the future holds, but
for now I am thrilled to treasure the moments
and do all I can to ensure a smooth leadership
transition and a future for Montefiore as
strong as its past.
With heartfelt gratitude,

Legacy Giving
The fact that you are considering a legacy gift to Montefiore shows that you have
a strong commitment to ensuring quality health care for our community well into the
future. Perhaps your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, sister, brother or dear friend was

you, yourself, were served by Montefiore’s physical therapists or social workers while
spending time in our rehab. You know what it means to have peace of mind, confidence
and the relief from stress when you walked through our doors; those stressful days were
made easier because of the care Montefiore provided. Help us ensure that peace of
mind well into the future. Make that commitment. It’s the right thing to do.

Thank you to the entire Montefiore and The Weils community for
your generous support of the 2015 Annual Sustaining Campaign. With
only a few weeks left, we are reaching towards our goal, which will
help us to provide the loving care that residents, patients and families
have come to depend on every day – regardless of ability to pay.
The campaign will end on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 – so there is still
time to make a 2015 gift. For more information on supporting this
campaign, please contact Kerry Kertesz, development associate, at
216.910.2636 or email kkertesz@montefiorecare.org.
D ON AT E N OW – G O TO M ON TEF I ORECARE.ORG
DEBBIE ROTHSCHILD,
DIRECTOR OF
THE MONTEFIORE
FOUNDATION
FUNDRAISING AT ITS FINEST
Over the years, I have had the opportunity
to plan a lot of fundraising events. Each
one takes on its own personality and has its
own distinct rewards and challenges. The
Montefiore, Memories and Mimosas benefit
brunch held on May 3, 2015 was a real joy
from beginning to end. A sell-out crowd of
400 came together to honor Lauren Rock as
she steps down as president & CEO. While
paying tribute to Lauren, we raised more than
$115,000 to support our new in-home memory
care program. Kol Hakavod to our very
generous community!
An event like this does not happen
without a lot of people involved. I want to
thank the Foundation staff: Denise Pease,
Melissa Adell and Kerry Kertesz for their hard
work and attention to detail. Many thanks to
Susan Lieberman who added her expertise and
keen eye to every piece of printed material
and so much more. Many thanks to Akilah
Porter who jumped in and helped out with all
sorts of last minute logistics. And my thanks
to Carol Weiss who spoke so beautifully on
behalf of the executive staff of Montefiore
and The Weils.
We had an amazing group of chair people
who provided ideas, guidance and a whole lot
of leg work. My sincere appreciation goes out
to our event chairs: Marti & Jeff Davis, Mary
Ann & Gary Shamis and Judy & Steve Willensky
and to all of the event chairs including Casey &
Jamie Bankhurst, Barb & Gary Bleiweiss, Cindy
& Richard Demsey, Debbie & Andy Hoffmann,
Larry Mack, Judy & Dov Nisman, Patty &
Eric Rubin, Ginny & Doug Solomon, Carol &
Michael Weiss and Mira & Mark Weiss.
We were also fortunate to have Lauren’s
family serve as honorary chairs: Lauren’s
husband Pete Turner, her parents Carole &
Alvin Rock and her siblings Dina & David Rock
along with Sue Rock & Tom Millhoff. It was
truly an all-star group of supporters.
I want to wish Lauren my most heart-felt
appreciation for all she has done to bring
Montefiore and The Weils to where we are
today. The community is stronger because of
Lauren’s hard work. That strength will only
grow as we work together to provide the very
best in healthcare for those we serve.
May we go from strength to strength,
