Welcome
It’s that time of year again, welcome to the
16th Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fayre!
We delighted to welcome new exhibitors
and entertainers, as well as plenty of old
friends, to join us in getting the Christmas
season started in true Medieval festive
style.
Explore our marquees and medieval tents
with over 100 stalls selling seasonal wares,
food and drink, crafts, historical goods
and more. Whether you’re looking for the
perfect, original gift or indulging yourself
with a unique treat, if you’re shopping
until you’re dropping, take advantage of
the Parcel Creche to keep your hands free
for a tasty treat. With a wide range of food
and drink stalls to tickle your
taste buds, you can grab a
mulled wine, a spiced
cider or steaming cup of
coffee, or why not head
over to our local Beer
Tent to whet your
appetite for our
full programme
of entertainment.
New for 2014...
With the bone-crunching Plantagenet
Society fighting knights, medieval music,
puppetry, dance and fire juggling, there’s
entertainment throughout the castle all
weekend. And keep an eye open for our
10’ giants!
We hope you enjoy our Hands-on History
Tent, with activities for knights and
damsels young and old, and be sure
not to miss out on a visit to St. Nicholas
in his magical den. Whether it’s try-on
armour, have-a-go archery and cross bow
or birds of prey, there is something for
all the family to enjoy. Head to the Inner
Bailey across the flambeau-lit moat for
storytelling, demonstrations and activities,
and to enjoy beer, sausages and roast
chestnuts inside the Castle ruins.
For our fiery Saturday evening opening,
join Medieval knights, maidens,
entertainers and stall holders as the
sun sets across South Shropshire and
the castle comes alive for an evening
of truly atmospheric fiery medieval
revelry. We are having a mass sing
along of The Twelve Days of
Christmas on Saturday 6.00pm and
8.00pm and Sunday at 3.10pm.
Wherever you are in the castle join in
and get Christmassy!
• Blasts from the past with medieval
trumpeter Bill Tuck.
• The Strolling Drones - Medieval
songs and larks.
• The Shrewsbury Mummers Medieval street theatre with a
modern twist.
• The Battle of Mortimer’s Cross Which side will you be on?
• The Castle Chorus sing The Twelve
Days of Christmas.
• Jesters’ Wand Workshop & Parade Make your own ninny stick and
show it off.
We hope you have a
wonderful visit, and a
merry Christmas!
The Performers
Bill Tuck
The Shrewsbury Mummers
A renowned medieval trumpet and
sackbut player, Bill will be the Fayre’s
musical herald, Revellion’s brass
section and demonstrating the art of
playing the straight trumpet.
The ancient art of the mummers’
play is brought to life in this new
production by characters named after
the streets of medieval Shrewsbury.
The players combine physical comedy,
songs and wordplay to celebrate life,
love and the turning of the year.
(Sat only)
Revellion & Mistress Love
The popular medieval dance band
with a driving rhythm section,
hypnotic drones and soaring melody
lines played on ancient woodwinds,
strings, drums, pipes and hurdy
gurdy. Mistress Love leads the
dancing.
The Battle of Mortimer’s
Cross
Discover History enlist the help of the
audience as they re-enact one of the
biggest battles of the Wars of the Roses
- Mortimer’s Cross, but first they must
fight for Ludford Bridge.
No Strings Puppet Theatre
The Strolling Drones
Renowned for his fine singing voice,
Pete Morton returns to the Fayre with
a collection of ancient and traditional
seasonal songs accompanied on
medieval drone instruments by
Wynndebagge, who adds his
traditional banter.
Robin Hood gets mixed up with
sheep, Batman and the Beach Boys
in this fantastic tale of antics in
Sherwood Forest. Using rod and hand
puppets the story of Robin Hood and
the evil Sheriff is played for all to
delight in.

They tell the legend of Robin Hood
and his dastardly enemy the Sheriff of
Nottingham. An antidote to the adage
‘Never work with children’. Laughter
guaranteed or your money back - if
Robin hasn’t already given it to the
poor, that is!
Kris Katchit & James the
Jester
This year the Fayre has two of the
best jesters in the business. Stilts,
clubs, diabolos and ‘don’t try this
at home’ tricks that will amaze and
enthral you. For apprentice jesters
who want to learn the basics, Kris will
also be running Circus Skills
workshops in the Hands-On
History Tent.

popular ones.

The Ludlow Giants
Discover all about the ancient art of
falconry, marvel at the fine collection
of hawks, falcons and owls on display
and watch them in flight as the Master
Falconer sends them into the skies
above the castle.
Our very own Master-At-Arms will
demonstrate the use of the sword and
quarter staff in medieval fighting.
Peter is a renowned theatrical fight
trainer and will select members of the
audience to join him in swordplay.
The ever-popular Brother Sid and
his pulchritudinous companion, the
beautiful Lady Bella will delight and
entertain you all as they weave their
musical, magical way through the
merry crowds.
The Plantagenet Society
The sparks fly as the armour-clad
knights battle it out with sword and
axe to gain the victor’s laurels. No
quarter is given and none asked for.

courtly ladies look on.

The Hands-On History Tent
A big tent with two halves. In one half, Medieval Family Crafts
will host The Master Builder’s range of small-scale medieval
buildings for small hands to construct, brass rubbings and the
chance to be photographed in medieval attire. This area will also
host Kris Katchit’s Circus Skills. Session times will be posted
outside the tent.
Happening in the other half, Discover History will be on hand to
show you how to make a jester’s wand – also called a ninny stick.
No jester is complete without one! You can even come along to
wave it in the Jester’s Parade – check programme for times.
Alongside them will be History Matters, demonstrating how to
make Rush Lights, known as ‘the poor man’s candle’ and Medieval
Rag Dolls. The audience will be invited to have a go and get their
hands on the making of these interesting medieval items.
Please note: All ages are welcome at these sessions. However, young
children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
