AHS a semi-finalist in the $50,000 Vans Custom Culture contest
Aloha High School (AHS) is a semifinalist in the Vans Custom Culture competition,
a national high school shoe customization contest where schools from all over the United
States compete for a chance to win money for their art programs. Registered schools
received four pairs of blank Vans sneakers to be customized in four themes: Art, Music,
Action Sports and Local Flavor.
Aloha High School was one of 2,000 schools to receive four shoes from Vans. Students
customized each sneaker. The Local Flavor shoes honor Portland’s “weirdness” with a
tribute to the Naked Bike Race, Action Sports pay homage to surfers and the sea, the Art
entry features de-constructed Vans and a nod to Jackson Pollock and the Music masterpiece
turns the Vans into a working violin.
If Aloha wins the Northwest Regional Competition, through public vote, the AHS Art
Department would receive $4,000 and will be one of five schools eligible to win $50,000.

The shoes are on display in the main office of Aloha High School, 18550 SW Kinnaman
Rd., Beaverton.

King Arthur Flour teaches Highland Park MS students
to bake and give back
Sixth and seventh grade students at Highland Park Middle School will learn to bake and give
back as part of the King Arthur Flour “Bake for Good: Kids Learn Bake Share Program” on
Monday, May 5, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Highland Park Middle School, 7000 SW Wilson Ave.,
Beaverton. The King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vt., will visit Highland Park Middle
School to teach sixth and seventh-grade students to bake fresh, nutritious bread from scratch.
“The Bake for Good: Kids Learn Bake Share Program has three goals: learn, bake, share,” says
Paula Gray, Bake for Good: Kids Learn Bake Share Program Manager. “The cross-curricular
program includes math, science, reading, following directions, and more; baking is a practical
application of those skills and students are eager to use and share their newfound knowledge
by baking for others. Plus, they get to eat some of their homework!”
Following the presentation, students will receive ingredients, including King Arthur White
Whole Wheat Flour, to take home. They are encouraged to bake two loaves of bread – one
for them to keep and another to bring back to school for donation to the Sunshine Pantry, and
Chehalem Elementary School students and families.
Fourth and fifth grade students at Chehalem Elementary School will participate in the “Bake
for Good: Kids Learn Bake Share Program” on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.
