Our Mission
To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to
reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
2014 Annual Report
Officers’ Letter
Thank you for your generous support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) in 2014. Your
commitment to our mission is an essential part of our ongoing success.
America’s youth need our support now more than ever. One in five lives in poverty, and 11
million are left unsupervised every day during critical out-of-school time. This generation is
in danger of being the first in America’s history to not do as well as their parents, and BGCA
wants to make sure that doesn’t happen by keeping the door to a great future open for
every young person.
Your continued assistance has allowed us to do just that, by taking our advocacy for
America’s youth to the next level with the launch of the Great Futures Campaign. The Great
Futures launch marked a new era for BGCA as a lead advocate for the kids who need us
most. It represented the coming together of our Movement to galvanize the American
public and garner millions of supporters to take action to help America’s youth.
The campaign officially launched July 31, 2014, with a BGCA promotional event in Times
Square and more than 620 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide activating the campaign in their
communities. In addition, nearly 60 corporations and media outlets, as well as BGCA
celebrity ambassadors and volunteer leaders, leveraged their networks to create awareness
and engagement. BGCA also took the Great Futures Campaign to Capitol Hill, engaging
congressional leaders to participate in the launch and spread the message via social media.
BGCA is now better positioned than ever before to bring our message of opportunity and
hope to a wider audience. The Great Futures Campaign has enabled us to deepen our
impact and secure positive outcomes for our nation’s children and teens. We could not have
made this unprecedented leap forward without you. It is the giving spirit and belief in our
Movement’s mission evinced by our partners and donors that laid the foundation for our
success. Thank you again for your continued support.

2014 Annual Report
How the National Organization Serves Local Clubs
In 1906, 53 local Clubs banded together to establish a national organization. Since
then, the national organization, now known as Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and
local Clubs have worked in close collaboration to help America’s youth reach their
full potential.
Through its Atlanta headquarters, regional service centers and Washington, D.C.,
Government Relations office, BGCA provides assistance and support to Clubs in
youth program development, board and staff development, organizational planning,
resource development, marketing and communications, and administration and
management. Key functions include:
• Developing and testing new programs for youth;
• Assisting Clubs with outcome-based program planning and evaluation;
• Providing comprehensive child safety resources to protect youth and
position Boys & Girls Clubs as catalysts for child protection;
• Helping community leaders establish new Clubs and expand existing ones;
• Providing training experiences, management consultations and resources
for staff development, volunteer recruitment, marketing, fundraising,
compensation and benefits administration;
• Promoting greater public awareness about the Movement’s mission and
impact; and
• Addressing legislative and public policy issues affecting young people and
the volunteer sector.
Safety: Our No. 1 Priority
At Boys & Girls Clubs, child safety is our No. 1 priority. For more than 100 years, child
protection and safety have been the bedrock principles of our work. To demonstrate
this ongoing commitment to child safety, BGCA convened a safety focused Great
Think in September 2014 which brought together over 80 experts from government,
business and nonprofit organizations. A robust exchange of thoughts and viewpoints
took place around the need for a shared, leading-edge approach to ensuring young
people’s physical and emotional safety in Clubs as well as the community. The
resulting white paper, “Ensuring Youth Safety in Out-of-School Time Settings,” is
available for anyone to read on greatfutures.org.
In addition to the Youth Safety Great Think, BGCA continued to provide many
resources to help Clubs keep kids safe, including an online organizational safety
assessment that helps Clubs identify risks, and then produces a customized safety
improvement plan. Clubs can also access an online library of hundreds of up-to-date
resources to help enhance safety, in addition to a Club safety desk reference and an
electronic newsletter focused on Club safety.

2014 Annual Report
Annual Campaigns
Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s public launch of the Great Futures Campaign in
2014 provided a historic opportunity for Clubs to leverage the national Boys &
Girls Club brand to implement and maximize individual giving through their own
annual campaigns. BGCA rebranded the It Just Takes One initiative, developing
customizable Great Futures Campaign resources for Clubs to capitalize on the
Campaign’s momentum locally. Since their release, Great Futures Campaign
resources have been accessed nearly 6,000 times by Clubs all over the nation.
Advancing Philanthropy
In 2014, Advancing Philanthropy (AP), funded by the Deerbrook Charitable Trust,
supported 53 Club organizations nationwide to build Club strategies and capacity
to take fundraising to the next level. AP graduate organizations raised $52 million
in private funding in 2014, which will allow their Clubs to serve more young people
with greater impact. This transformational gift from the Deerbrook Charitable Trust
will enable BGCA to support some 500 organizations in shaping a new culture of
philanthropy by infusing a major gift strategy in local Clubs’ resource
development plans.
Planned Giving
BGCA continues to provide services that help Clubs recognize, secure and close
planned gifts. More than 160 commitments with an estimated expectancy of $18
million were documented in 2014. Since 2003, when BGCA began assisting with
planned giving, Clubs have secured more than $221.6 million in planned giving
expectancies. A planned gift is a truly inspiring way to leave a personal legacy and
impact lives for generations to come.
Individual Giving Recognition Societies
BGCA’s three national recognition societies provide a way for local Clubs to thank
and honor individual donors who make an impact on children’s lives:
he Jeremiah Milbank Society acknowledges generous individuals who
T
donate unrestricted gifts of $10,000 or more to a local Club. In 2014, a total
of 1,960 such donors were recognized. Society members, of whom more than

Critical Government Advocacy
BGCA is a strong partner with government at all levels in serving the needs of
youth. More than 24% of Club funding derives from government grants and
program fund transfers that address myriad issues including childhood hunger and
nutrition, mentoring youth to prevent delinquency and grow personal responsibility,
educational enrichment during non-school hours and a variety of social programs, all
leading to keeping youth in school and engaged in society.
In the past year, our Clubs have received over $333 million from federal, state, local,
and tribal governments, not including funding for our 400 military Club sites. In fact,
since 1996, the federal government alone has awarded more than $1 billion to BGCA.
Our partnerships with government have contributed immensely to serving the needs
of youth in our Clubs and communities across the county.
16
Recognizing changes in the composition of government funding, BGCA is placing
more emphasis on obtaining federal competitive grant funding for activities that
benefit our youth within Clubs. Securing competitive federal grants is a growing
area of specialization that requires extraordinary preparation and execution
including reviewing and evaluating specific federal grant opportunities, aligning
those opportunities with complementary BGCA and derivative Club programs,
and providing the expertise needed to engage and win funding opportunities in a
partnership between BGCA and Clubs.
BGCA and our Clubs actively advocate for the needs of youth with governments at all
levels, ensuring the voices of our most precious resources of the future are heard and
their needs addressed.

technical and leadership skills to ensure our Club members are prepared for
great futures.

Great Futures:
The Campaign for America’s Kids
On July 31, 2014, Boys & Girls Clubs of America publicly launched Great Futures:
the Campaign for America’s Kids, marking a new era of impact, advocacy and
fundraising efforts for the organization. The launch represented the historic coming
together of our Movement, to issue a wake-up call to America about the crisis facing

with no place to go.
Through the strategic engagement of BGCA’s key stakeholders across the nation,
including Clubs, corporate and NGO partners, congressional champions, celebrity
advocates and our millions of Club alumni, BGCA elevated the power of its collective
voice, generating over 1 billion media impressions to promote #GreatFutures: the
Campaign for America’s Kids.
BGCA’s national launch event took over Times Square and was hosted by entertainer
and Club alum Nick Cannon, featuring celebrity guests, 300 Club kids, and a surprise
pop-up concert by Grammy Award winning artist and Club alum, Ne-Yo. Locally, nearly
200 Club organizations hosted launch events and rallies all over the country. The
Great Futures Campaign launch earned local and national media coverage, including
coverage on ABC’s Good Morning America and a special feature on CNBC’s Squawk
Box. Media partners promoted the launch through TV and radio PSAs as well as print
