In order to analyze and evaluate information acquired from various sources (5B), students should experience
sufficient learning opportunities to develop the following skills:
• Use organizational features of text and available technology (e.g., glossary, table of contents, indexes,
icons, word search) to analyze and evaluate information.
• Organize related information under main topics.
• Distinguish between main ideas and supporting details.
• List sources of information selected for use in project (e.g., title, author, copyright date).
Have students review and discuss the task to be completed and how the rubric will be used to evaluate it.
Ask each student to select a subject for his/her research (or assign one). The student should use organizational
features of 4 or more appropriate sources (text or available technology) to locate information about his/her
topic. Information should be recorded on note cards (or other appropriate method of recording). The kind of
source, title, author and copyright date should be recorded as well.
Have each student analyze and evaluate the information, organize the data into main topics with supporting
details, and provide it in written form.
Evaluate each student's performance using the rubric. Add each student's scores to determine the performance
level.
Note: This information can be used to write a multi-paragraph research report.
Upon completion of 5A, 5B, and 5C, student will turn in 1) graphic organizer, 2) note cards, 3) first draft, and 4)
final draft.
