Course Materials
TEXTBOOK: “Physics for Engineers and Scientists”
by H. C. Ohanian and J. T. Markert,
3rd Edition, Vol. 1, Publisher: W. W. Norton and Company
Content: This course covers Chapters 1-21.
CLICKERS: Purchase an ”iClicker” from the UT-Coop or ask around to see if you can purchase a used one.

Class Logistics and Grading
• Homework: The Quest homework service handles distribution and collection of homework and the web.
Login to http://quest.cns.utexas.edu/student to obtain and submit home work assignments. Homework assignments will generally be available Mondays at 9am. Homework is due the following Sunday by 11:59PM.
No late homework will be accepted. Solutions will be available on Quest one hour after the deadline.
• Quizzes: There will be four in-class 50 minute quizzes. No makeup quizzes will be given, but one will be
dropped. The Quiz schedule shall be announced to you during the second week of classes.
• Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensize and mandatory, and is currenty listed on U.T. Registrar’s exam
schedule as on Wednesday, May 13, 9:00am-12:00pm. The final location will be announced by U.T. Registar’s
office around 1 month prior to Final exam period.
• During each Quiz and Final Exam: You may bring one sheet of Letter paper with anything you want
written on either side, and a simple calculator. No other references will be allowed. All cell phones must be

you must ensure that you bubble in the 3-digit test Version Code (entered into the “Special Code” box) and
your EID correctly to be eligible for any credit for an exam. Invalid bubble sheets that do not have a correct
EID and/or Version code will not be graded for any credit.
• Attendance: We are required to keep track of attendance for this class. It will be done in the form of ”iClicker quizzes”. Therefore, you will need to purchase an i-Clicker and register it (see ”Clickers” above). We
will intersperse lectures with interactive quiz questions chosen to highlight the course materials. We will begin
taking attendance via ”i-Clicker quizzes” on Wednesday, Sept 3, 2014. Clicking any response will earn you
attendance. There will be 4 dropped attendance grades for all unrecorded absences including personal absences,
and technical snags with clickers. You are responsible for maintaining your clicker in working condition and
ensure that your responses are being registered.
Out of the 10% attendance credit, 2% will be reserved for discussion session (Wednesday evening class) attendance. The remaining will be for class attendance.
• Announcements: Announcements pertaining to the class will be made predominantly through the Quest
