APPENDIX XXV
What is Peru Like?
The following books tell lovely stories and provide very rich details about economy, customs,
markets, goods produced, clothing, and food of people in Peru.
Diaz, Katacha. Carolina’s Gift: A Story Of Peru. 2002, 1568996969. A young
Peruvian girl wants to get a gift for her grandmother so she visits the local market to
choose a gift. There are great pictures showing dress, lifestyle, etc.
Dorros, Arthur. Tonight is Carnaval. 1991, 014055467X. This is a story of a Peruvian
boy going to Carnaval. It has very informative illustrations that are Peruvian artwork.
Knutson, Barbara. Love and Roast Chicken: A Trickster Tale from the Andes
Mountains. 2004, 1575056577. A clever guinea pig repeatedly outsmarts the fox that
wants to eat him for dinner.
Krebs, Laurie. Up and Down the Andes: A Peruvian Festival Tale. 2008,
9781846862038. A lively trip through the Andes mountains of Peru on the way to the
festival in Cusco.
Both books are rich in new vocabulary. Below are lists of terms likely unfamiliar to many
students. A vocabulary anticipation guide is provided, as well as a Vocabulary Analysis page.
The Vocabulary Analysis page provides opportunity for students to infer meaning from the
context. Be sure to have students check the information at the back of both books. Ask students
to watch for words that appear in both books. And remember the covers!
A retrieval chart, What is Peru Like? Is designed to assist students in analyzing and
categorizing the information available in the two stories. Students should gather information
from both the story and the pictures. In the process of analyzing the illustrations, a blank grid
placed over each page helps students to isolate ideas and assists in the development of
geographical thinking. Use the blank grid provided to make an overhead for each student.
Students will use these blank grids many times in the process of analyzing pictures. Ask students
to identify things that are the same in both stories – they might even want to compare them using
a Venn diagram.
