English IV - Oedipus the King
Assignments: 1) Write a thorough outline of five examples of dramatic irony in the play.*
2) Write a thorough outline of five examples of hubris in the play. #

Example indented from the left margin in quoted words from the play; include proper
MLA citation. For example: “Sick” (Sophocles 4).
Brief explanation of how the example is ironic, also indented from the left margin
(One or two sentences should suffice)
The entire page is double spaced including your name, date, and period
Each page must have a header including your last name and the page number
These are two separate assignments
Each assignment will have a title. The title is more than Dramatic Irony or Hubris; it
must act almost like a thesis statement. For example: Anticipation Created through
Dramatic Irony in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex.
In the title everything is capitalized except prepositions, conjunctions, and articles.
Also, do not bold, underline, italicize, or change the font and size of the title.
* There are approximately 33 solid, clear, easily defined examples in the play from page
4 through page 79. You will copy and explain 10 examples from the required pages listed
below. Remember, words like “intended” and “unintended,” “evident” and “hidden,” or
“perceived” and “unperceived” will help facilitate the explanation. You must have 10 accurate
examples with explanations for an A. 8-9 B, and 6-7 for a C.
You must spread out the examples over the play as follows:

2 from pages 21 – 44
2 from pages 52 – 68
2 from pages 69 – 79

have 5 accurate examples with explanations for an A. 4 B, and 3 for a C.

2 or 3 from pages 51 – 106
You will be graded on 1) the number of examples that satisfactorily display irony or hubris and
2) number of explanations that show thorough understanding of concepts. The words you use
from the text must show clear examples of what the assignment requires.
