Name: ____________________________ Class: _________ Date: ______________ Ms. O’Bryan General Reference Defining Symbolism and Symbols Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. Symbolism in literature can be subtle or obvious, used sparingly or a lot. An author may repeatedly use the same object to convey deeper meaning or may use variations of the same object to create an overarching mood or feeling. Symbolism is often used to support a literary theme in a subtle manner. A symbol, in general terms, is anything that stands for something else. Obvious examples of objects that are symbols are flags, which symbolize a nation; the cross is a symbol for Christianity; and Uncle Sam a symbol for the United States. In literature, a symbol is expected to have significance. For example, In Suzanne Collin’s novel The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen’s Mockingjay pin is a symbol for where Katniss comes from. Symbols are not always objects. Sometimes, symbols can be colors, characters, weather, setting, and more. Another example is in L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West symbolizes evil. Example: Simon kicked open the door to the small shop. He looked around in the darkness until he found what he was looking for: a tool bench with crowbars, pliers, screwdrivers and other implements. Silently, he used the tools to remove the shackles around his wrists and feet, shackles he had worn for years, shackles that had helped to keep him imprisoned for most of his life. Finally free, he left the shackles on the table and began to leave. Before he reached the door, Simon turned around and stared at the shackles on the table. He strode across the room and picked up a heavy hammer. With all his might, he brought the hammer down again and again on the shackles, until they broke and bent. Still he hammered, until the cruel chains and manacles were disfigured, unrecognizable lumps of iron. His face marked by both fatigue and satisfaction, Simon dropped the hammer and left. What do the shackles represent to Simon and the reader? What do they symbolize?
