NSMS 8th Grade Book Report Elements
INSTRUCTIONS
Each written element of the book report must be hand written by the
student (no parents, siblings, etc.) in blue or black ink. All writing must be
legible. Each element will be graded on spelling, grammar, capitalization,
punctuation, and sentence structure as well as content.
1. a. Students will complete a flow chart provided by the teacher.
The bottom four boxes will need to be answered on a
separate sheet of paper in complete sentences. Attach this to the
flow chart. Each answer needs to be 8-10 lines in length.
b. In three 8-10 line paragraphs, write your reasons as to why I
should or should not read this book. This is called a
recommendation. Be specific in your writing. You may share
your favorite parts or feelings about the novel.
2.
Students will complete four detailed and colored drawings on
unlined paper. Each drawing will be accompanied by an 8-10
line explanation and will be labeled one of the following:
(1) characters (2) setting (3) plot (4) conflict / resolution. Half
of the sheet will be filled with the drawing (and background)
and the other half with the explanation.
3.
Students will construct and answer a five-question essay test.
Each question will begin differently using five of the following
six choices: Who…. What…. When…. Where…. Why….
How…. Each answer must be 8-10 lines in length.
4.
There are four different types of text: Narrative,
Argumentative, Descriptive, and Informational / Explanatory.
Your novel will definitely be a narrative. COPY (quote) 8-10
lines of a narrative paragraph from your novel and explain in 3lines the reasons this piece would be considered narrative text.
Then, find two other paragraphs that show argumentative,
descriptive, or informational / explanatory writing. Quote the
passages and give your reasons as you did for the narrative
piece. (Three paragraphs with reasons in all.)
5.
Choose two strong characters from your novel. Show differing
points of view on a topic from the plot of your novel for each
character (8-10 lines each).
6. a.
Students will write a poem (the form for each quarter will be
assigned). The poem needs to represent the novel and the
events therein.
b. In 15-20 lines, compare this book to another book that you
have read or a movie that you have seen. Use specific
examples and identify similarities and differences.
