2009 theme: Skin: be comfortable in yours
Portsmouth, New Hampshire… An unforgettable evening! That’s what’s in store at The
Event, the downtown dance party benefit for The Music Hall, Friday November 20 at
8pm at the landmark Victorian theater in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Back by popular demand, international sensation DJ Logic will be spinning the tunes
as patrons dance on stage, sample gourmet hors d’oeuvres from great Seacoast
restaurants and bid on a Silent Auction filled with beautiful art, weekend packages
and sports tickets.
Event co-chair Brook Gassner has the perfect insider’s tip, “Start off your evening by
using our new Valet Parking service and head into the Founders Lobby Lounge
below the theatre for a signature cocktail. Tuck into the hors d’oeuvres while you
look over the list of Silent Auction items and ponder your first bid. Take that cocktail
upstairs into the theatre, check out the cool visuals on screen and welcome DJ Logic
back to the Hall. He’ll be on stage where you’ll be dancing all night.”
Logic’s plan for the evening? “Playing my own music/my own production, as well
as house, electronic dance, a little bit of hip hop and some jazz. I like to be very
eclectic with my set – put everyone in the right groove. Last year, I had a wonderful
time. The energy was great. People were having a great time. I loved the visuals and
just walking around your amazing venue and seeing the history of the place.”
The theme for this year’s Event is Skin: Be comfortable in yours. According to Mary
Horigan, Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving, “The Event Committee has
come up with some fun themes for past Events, such as Bollywood or Denim &
Diamonds. This year we are going with Skin, be comfortable in yours. Skin is in this
year - look at all the fashion magazines- whether it is python, leopard or your own,
our themes allow you to have fun with your wardrobe. So think Zebra pants, snake
skin tops or your favorite jeans! Anything goes!”
What is it about dancing – and dancing on stage – that makes The Event such a
magnet?
Event co-chair Jen Shulman says, “I think dance is essential to the vibrancy of
human beings. I coordinate many parties, fundraisers and events with live music and
DJs because I feel that music is definitely one of the key factors in the pursuit of
happiness. I am a firm believer that while life can certainly be difficult at times, there
are shortcuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them. The whole energy that ensues
on a large, energetic dance floor where all the people are feeling the crescendos and
beats together is a sensation we don’t have very often…it brings people together and
can create a lot of humor and joy.”
Jen is a big fan of Logic, “DJ Logic is the man! I experienced him for the first time
last year at this same event and I was totally amazed. He has the skill to mix music
all night with beats that move you but not necessarily to tunes you recognize. His
diversity of song selection is tremendous and I admire a DJ who can make you dance
hard all night long when most of the time you can even recognize the music. He has
a gift for knowing the crowd…last year, the dance floor was packed…he read the
people and knew what they wanted…Zen all the way.
So what is The Event Experience? Again, Jen, “People who attend this event
experience a lot of vibrant energy, movement, outrageous clothing, and urban
infusion! I think it’s a bit of an eye opener for a lot of people because they don’t
realize they can get this caliber of DJ and dance floor in the small town of
Portsmouth…The Event is quite possibly the only party of the whole year that is able
to provide that.”
What’s in store for patrons with the Silent Auction? According to Mary Horigan,
Director of Corporate & Foundation Giving, “This year you can bid on a fun
evening aboard Chris Ayer’s boat, tennis lessons with Julius Kipkoech at Brook
Gassner’s house, a Regal Limousine ride about town enjoying a progressive dinner at
three fine restaurants, a delicious catered dinner for eight by Julie Dunfey’s White
Apron Catering, and our big ticket item a Vespa LX50 donated by GreatBay
Motorcycle/North Hampton . Some wonderful donations that will ultimately benefit
The Hall.”
Jen agrees, “The Event is such an excellent fundraiser and something people in the
community look forward to all year. The money we receive from this party goes to
running and refurbishing this beautiful hall. All the food for the party is donated by
local restaurants, and this is a chance for them to receive some excellent visibility in
the community. Overall, a great night!
About DJ Logic
The theorem of turntablist as musician has been long proven in the capable hands of
DJ Logic, whom with jazz as his foundation has become a wax innovator by
crossing genres and sprinkling his sound across the map. As one of the world's most
accomplished turntablists, DJ Logic is widely credited for introducing jazz into the
hip - hop realms and is considered by most as a highly respected session musician
and an innovative bandleader.
DJ Logic, internationally renowned turntablist, electronic music ambassador,
musician, and producer who uses turntables in a live band setting, was born in the
Bronx, during the birth of hip-hop. As a young teen, he received a pair of turntables
for Christmas and was soon spinning music for dances and parties throughout his
native borough. In 1990, he started playing turntables with live musicians who were
impressed by the fresh sound he brought to their music and by 1996, he was
appearing with funk trio Medeski, Martin & Wood, making him a sensation in the
jazz, jam band and hip-hop worlds. Soon, Logic was the most sought-after dee jay in
New York City, and he began his first gig as a bandleader of Project Logic in 1999.
He has since gone on to tour from France to Brazil to Japan doing solo dj gigs,
recording his own albums and producing for others. He has worked with the Allman
Brothers, Phish, Roberta Flack, Mos Def, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, John Mayer
and Maroon 5. DJ Logic combines textures and weaves them into something
completely new. Whether its adding tabla beats (two-headed drum) to electrified
blues riffs and salsa grooves, or attacking hard rock and punk with a jazz sensibility,
this diversity of musical settings has become Logic's hallmark - his music is a recipe
for jazz with the ingredients as Bronx as hip-hop.

Praise for DJ Logic
“Logic's not just a skilled DJ, he's also a talented all-around musician…the man to call when
jazz cats want to tap into the hip-hop zeitgeist. The results…multi-textured grooves.” – URB
