Respect Week – Jefferson School
Kindergarten
Miss McCrea's Kindergarten read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. Chrysanthemum loves her
name, until she goes to school and her classmates make fun of it. Each time one of her
classmates says something mean or disrespectful to Chrysanthemum the class took turns
crumpling a large paper heart representing Chrysanthemum's feelings. At the conclusion of the
story the class took turns using kind words and statements, unfolding and smoothing out
Chrysanthemum's heart.
Mrs. Northrop's Kindergarten will be discussing feelings and how words can hurt and cause pain
without seeing a visible injury. The children will hear the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin
Henkes. This story is about a little girl who is very excited to start school and make new friends
but finds herself being teased and laughed at because of her name Chrysanthemum. After the
story is read and discussed, the children will sit in a circle. A large red paper heart will be passed
around to each child. When the child gets the red heart, he or she will need to say something
hurtful and crumple a part of the heart. After each child has had the chance to respond, Mrs.
Northrop will take the crumpled heart, open it up and discuss that the shape of the heart has not
changed but the creases are still there from the hurtful words. Discussion will follow. A bean bag
will now be passed around to each child and now they have to say nice things. Children will
compare the scarred heart to the beanbag and will be encouraged to practice behavior that is not
hurtful.

Mrs. Buchanan’s Third Grade class will participate in two activities for Respect Week:


The students will have a daily journal entry about respect each day of Respect Week.
Students may choose to share their submissions and participate in a discussion about their
own thoughts on the entry.
We will also as a class, make a life size student out of large white paper. Inside this
student we will each write our thoughts on how a respectful person should or would act.
Outside of the student we will include ideas on how a respectful student wouldn’t act.
Grade 4
