Dear Parents and Carers,
Reading at Cale Green- a Reading Workshop
Thursday 7th November – 3.30pm
Perhaps one of the greatest gifts as teachers and parents we can give our children is the love of
reading. This is one of our main priorities for every child at Cale Green – to ensure that they leave our
school as confident readers who are fluent, who read with good understanding and who enjoy picking
up a good book!
Books and reading are given an elevated position within our school. Our books are chosen in
conjunction with the children and are regularly updated to reflect current trends and their interests.
Listed below are some of the ways in which we work to achieve our aims:

Daily high quality phonics sessions (additional sessions are held where necessary)

Weekly guided reading sessions (additional sessions are held where necessary)

Individual reading times (additional sessions are held where necessary)

We ensure that all our teaching staff are trained in the teaching of phonics

We employ a Reading Recovery teacher to support our younger children in developing their
reading

We ensure that our reading scheme books and reading for pleasure titles are carefully graded these are often chosen by the children

All children are carefully assessed to ensure that their learning is personalised and that they are
making good progress

There are whole school reading related activities across the school – such as the Roald Dahl
holiday completion and ‘Roald Dahl Day’activities

The school library is open to the children every day where they can choose to read whatever
they want - including newspapers such as ‘First News’, magazines such as ‘Aquilla’ and the odd
comic!

The School Library Bus visits each week

Classes regularly visit Edgeley Library

Book prizes are awarded for achieving the Gold Award in our whole school reward scheme

Regular visits to a local book shop are used as a reward for taking part in school activities
‘The behaviour and safety of pupils are outstanding … behaviour, courtesy and attitudes to learning are exemplary. The
leadership and management are outstanding … all pursue excellence resolutely’ Ofsted

Special reading events take place throughout the year to maintain the focus on reading - these
have recently included the ‘Christmas Story’ event, the ‘Mad March’ Readathon and the
Diamond Read Initiative

We have developed a close connection with the Stockport Schools’ Library Service’s annual
book awards which gives the children the opportunity to read brand new books for their age
range

Author and illustrator visits to our school

Groups of children throughout the school have visited other establishments to meet authors and
illustrators - recent visits have included the authors Cressida Cowell and Ciaran Murtagh

The children visit theatres across the North-West to watch performances of different books.
These have ranged from the classics - ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the Liverpool Empire to
Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ at NK in Romiley and also from Carol Ann Duffy’s version of ‘Little
Red Riding Hood’ at The Royal Exchange’ and an upcoming visit to see ‘War Horse’ by Michael
Morpurgo at the Lowry

North West Gifted and Talented Saturday events held at the school with a focus on reading ’Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Cravvat and an upcoming ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ day

Reading For Gold lunchtime club

Giving out ‘Bookstart’ resources such as ‘Treasure’ packs

Assemblies often have a theme related to a book – such as ‘Famous Fred’ by Posy Simmonds,
‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes and soon to start ‘Snowed Up’ by Rosalie K. Fry

World Book Day activities

Carefully chosen class novels / stories to be shared together
As you can see no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of ensuring the children leave Cale Green as
confident readers who enjoy reading just about anything and everything!
This is just a flavour of the reading that takes place in and around Cale Green. If you’d like to know
more about what we do we’d like to invite you to a Reading workshop where we will go through all of the
aspects of reading from how to get started in the Nursery to stretching our Gifted and Talented readers
across all ages.
The workshop will take place on Thursday 7th November from 3.30pm in our library and will be an
opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about any aspect of reading. If you would like to
attend this workshop please complete and return the slip below to your child’s class teacher.
Kind Regards,
Mrs. Sarah McHugh
