Opposing Viewpoints Essay
To complete this Opposing Viewpoints Essay assignment, students will choose a
controversial issue that involves the Spanish-speaking community and U.S. policymaking.
Possible topics might include illegal immigration, affirmative action, treatment of
migrant farm workers, or U.S. involvement in Mexico’s war on drugs. Though students
are encouraged to choose a topic that is meaningful and interesting to them, all topics will
need to be approved by Sr. Price. Students will then research the issue using at least four
credible sources. In a three-page double-spaced essay, students will need to outline the
inherent strengths and weaknesses for both opposing viewpoints of the issue. Then
students will express their supported opinion and make a policy recommendation for U.S.
lawmakers. The Opposing Viewpoints Essay assignment will have multiple due dates to
ensure that students are progressing in their research and producing a high-quality paper.
