DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE
22nd February 2012
Once again Christmas is nearly upon us with means that half the season has almost gone. With the
exceptionally mild autumn weather that we have been experiencing, it has hardly been what we would
call a winter season sport. At least Clubs all around our County should have been able to fulfill their
match fixtures without disruption by the "white stuff". This time last year when writing my editorial, the
Country was just beginning to experience the arrival of the snow.
All sections of the Association have been busy with matches and tournaments, many of which are
reported in later pages. There has been a mixed bag of team results but with many fine individual
achievements. The County Senior 1st team have got off to a particularly good start to this season's
campaign and the 2nd team had a magnificent 15-0 result against Kent.
We hope you enjoy the many photographs shown, not least the ones of our President's birthday surprise.
The Hampshire Senior Open Gold Tournament takes place 10/11th December with the Masters' Open
following on 21st/22nd January. Try to get along to these tournaments to support the players, be
entertained, and meet up with old friends, if you can. Players descend on Westgate from all over the
Country, a very popular venue, not only because of its playing facilities but its comfortable viewing areas
alike.
Again we appeal to the Districts and Clubs to send in items for the Newsletter - anything badminton
related that you think would be of interest to our readers. Articles don't necessarily have to be about
events but perhaps about the volunteers behind the scenes. Have you an unsung hero among your
members? Photographs are also welcome but please don't in-bed them in your text. On occasion that
causes problems for us.
Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Successful New Year from all at
Hampshire Badminton Association.

Hampshire Restricted Tournament 2011/12 Season
Played at the Westgate Centre - Report by Colin Byford
The Hants Restricted was held on 30th September/1st October with most of the Singles being played on the Friday and the
Doubles on Saturday.
The Men’s Singles attracted 24 players. In the top half of the draw Ben Muir and Adam Rickenbach were seeded 1 and 3
respectively and duly progressed to the semi-finals without any difficulty. Their match there was real trial with Adam winning
the first game to 17 before Ben took the 2 nd and 3rd ends to 12 and 10.
In the bottom half the seeds fell by the wayside in their first matches with Martin Ventham going out to Shravan Vaidyanth
21/18, 15/8 retired and Simon Broomfield losing to Dylan Lewis 22/20, 21/15. Shravan and Dylan then went through to the
semi-final which was won 21/14, 21/11 by Shravan.
The Ladies’ Singles was less well supported with only 11 players. Helena Cable was seeded number 1 and had to work hard
to reach the final by defeating Kelly Holdway 21/16, 21/18 and then Hayley Duckett 21/19, 21/19. At the bottom end of the
draw, Jo Dix was seeded 2 but narrowly lost her first match 12/21, 21/14, 21/16 to Josie Latimer. Josie then beat Sarah
Stannett 21/12, 21/17 to make her way into the final.
In the Men’s Doubles 15 pairs took part and the four seeds all reached their expected place in the semi-finals. At this point
the calculations were proved faulty as the number 4 seeds, Chris Evans/Rowan Taylor, eventually overcame the resistance of
Andy Penn/James Todd, the top seeds, by 21/16, 16/21, 21/16. At the other end John Hepworth/Adam Rickenbach (number 2
seeds) beat Dave Chartres/Alex Ferguson (number 3’s) 21/17, 21/18.
The final was another 3 setter with Chris & Rowan coming out on top by 17/21, 21/14, 21/14.
Seven pairs only in the Ladies’ Doubles! Sarah Burgess/Kelly Holdway, the top seeds, won in the final fairly comfortably by
beating the second seeds, Jenny Crump/Anna Showan 21/11, 21/11.
The Mixed Doubles also had fifteen pairs playing. We lost the second seeds, Anna Showan/Andy Penn in their first match
where they were beaten 21/10, 21/13 by Charmaine Webb/Rowan Taylor. The other three seeds, Sarah Burgess/John
Hepworth, Josie Latimer/James Todd and Kelly Holdway/Chris Shepperd all safely reached the semi-finals where Sarah &
John beat Josie & James (just!) 24/22, 29/27. At the bottom half of the draw, Charmaine & Rowan showed that their first
match was no fluke by beating Kelly & Chris 21/13, 13/21, 21/19, in the second of two very close semi-finals, before going on
the win the event by overcoming Sarah & John 21/18, 21/17.
A disappointing entry for our Senior Restricted Tournament. Despite this, some excellent play with a few surprises along
the way which gave our Selectors a few headaches when selecting the Senior County teams. Congratulations to all the
players for some very entertaining badminton but especially to all the winners, with Rowan the only player to take two
titles.
Congratulations also to Sarah & Chris for their achievement in reaching 100 County Caps apiece.

Hampshire Badminton 3
The 1st team managed to field their full team for their first weekend's matches with excellent results so hopefully this will
be the case for their 2nd & 3rd weekends.
The 2nd team have already fielded extra players with Kelvin Latimer, John Hepworth, Dave Chartres, Kieran Dix and Anna
Showan, all drawn from the not nominated pool and have had mixed results.
The 3rd team will always have a wide and varied number of players but without exception they will be players who are
really keen to play for their County and will turn out at a moment's notice.

Hampshire County 1st Team
Milton Keynes 12th/13th November 2011
Report by Trevor Shanks, Team Manager
The first match on the Saturday morning was against Buckinghamshire. We had beaten them 7/3 last
season and were hopeful of a similar result this time. At No.1 singles Ben Muir faced Nathan Rice, a
formidable opponent. Nathan took the first game 21/14 but Ben recovered to take the second 23/21.
During this game Nathan received a Yellow Card from the umpire for wasting time between rallies.
The third game was a repetition of the earlier two with long rallies before Nathan finally took it 21/14.
Meanwhile Adam Rickenbach was having a long drawn out struggle with his opponent, Stuart Burnett.
This match was another three setter with the Bucks man finally winning 21/12, 16/21 21/17. Our two
Ladies' singles players, Jo Dix and Josie Latimer soon levelled the scores. Jo beat Raveesha Fernando
21/17 21 13 and Josie accounted for Toni Blake with a 21/7 21/19 scoreline.
We won both Men's doubles in three games. Chris Evans and Rowan Taylor beat Stuart Burnett/Arthur
Cheung 18/21 21/11 21/19 and John Hepworth/Adam Rickenbach were 19/21 21/19 21/15 winners
over Nathan Rice/Jamie Kilgariff. Unfortunately Sarah Burgess and Kelly Holdway lost 21/18 21/17 to
the opposition first pair Alyssa Lim and Toni Blake but our second pairing, Jo and Viki Williams,
survived to take a close first game 24/22 and then the second 21/15 for a 5/3 lead going into the mixed.
Rowan and Sarah won their first game against Arthur Cheung/Alyssa Lim easily 21/14 but had to pull
out all the stops to take a nail-biting second 26/24. Chris and Kelly completed the victory, beating Jamie
Kilgariff/Carly Burnett in another close three setter. Their scores were 21/17 19/21 22/20.
As we had hoped, a 7/3 win to start the season.
The afternoon match was against newly promoted Derbyshire, rather an unknown quantity. This match
started well with Hampshire winning all the four opening singles. Ben didn’t waste much time in
beating Nicholas Tranter 21/6 21/12 and Adam won almost as easily against Edward Chrayah 21/13
21/15. Josie, promoted to 1st ladies singles for this match, accounted for Leah Kellogh 21/7 21/6 in
quick time. Anna Showan at 2nd singles was a competent winner against Charlotte Bond with a score of
21/13 21/13. 4/0 a good start. Chris Evans/Rowan Taylor lost 21/12 21/12 to Lee Clapham/James
Boxall while John & Adam went down 21/14 21/15 to Kristian Roebuck partnered with Daniel Terry.
Sarah & Kelly also lost in two games 21/17 21/16. Their opponents were Sarah Pulley & Tracy Parker.
After a close first game which they won 22/20 Jo & Viki stopped the rot when they took the second
game 21/13. Rowan & Sarah lost the first Mixed doubles 21/18 18/21 21/15 to Kristian Roebuck/Sarah
Pulley. We got our sixth point when Chris & Kelly beat Lee Clapham/Rachel Roebuck 21/16 21/13.
This win meant that with 13 points we were 2nd in the table,1 point behind Lancashire who had beaten
lowly Norfolk 7/3 in the afternoon and in a battle of the “Roses” had recorded a similar score over
Hampshire Badminton 4
Yorkshire 2nds in the morning. Leinster, our Sunday opponents, were in 3rd spot with 2 points. There
was a lot to play for!
Although we finally came out of this encounter 8/2 winners, 5 of the 10 matches went to 3 games, of
which we took 3. Both Ben and Adam spent some considerable time on court in their respective singles
matches. Ben was first off, a 26/24 18/21, 21/10 winner over Niall Tiemay. Adam followed soon after,
beaten 19/21 21/19 21/16 by Owen Marron. For the second time this weekend neither Jo nor Josie had
much trouble in winning their singles. Jo accounted for Jennie King 21/11 21/5 while Josie beat Claire
Flood 21/12 21/11.
Chris & Rowan beat Daniel Magee/Niall Tiemay 21/18 21/12 and John and Adam went to 3 games
before losing 22/20 16/21 21/17 to the Leinster 2nd pair Mark Cobbe/Eddie Cousins. That was our last
loss of the day. Sarah & Kelly beat Fiona Glennon /Pauline Glennon comfortably 21/18 21 9 while Jo &
Viki went to 3 games, the last a nail-biter,to beat Jennie King/Keelin Hogan 21/1713/21 26/24. Rowan
& Sarah took the 1st Mixed in 3 games 18/21 21/17 21/19 from Daniel Magee/Fiona Glennon. Chris &
Kelly beat Eddie Cousins/Keelin Hogan at 2nd Mixed in two tight games,24/22 25/23 to round off the
match.
A good result from a very close match.
We had a good weekend, finishing up with 21 points at the top of the table. Lancashire are in second
place with 19 and Buckinghamshire, having made a good recovery from their 7/3 Saturday morning
defeat by us, went on to record wins of 7/3 and 8/2 over Leicestershire and Lanarkshire, taking them to
3rd place with 18 points.
At our next weekend's set of matches, again at Milton Keynes, we play Norfolk and Lanarkshire,
currently 9th and 10th in the table and then on the Sunday we play mid-table Leicestershire. If the team
performs then as it did this weekend we should gain a good number of points keeping us in contention
for promotion at the end of the season.
An excellent start to the season for the Senior County 1st team. Hopefully they will be able to field their
first choice players next time round and continue their impressive winning ways.

Hampshire 2 lost 5 - 10
Not the start to the season this team wanted. Losing 3 of the 4 singles matches wasn't the best start to the match with
Hayley being the only player to record a win. They fared no better in the doubles with both the men and the ladies only
being able to record 1 win each, despite the ladies going to three ends in their remaining three matches. 2 wins in the
Mixed gave us a respectable score even if a losing one.

Although a slightly altered team, a repeat of the start against Sussex in their first match except this time it was Beulah
who recorded the only win in the singles. The men lost all their doubles and it was left to the ladies to add to the score
sheet, winning 3 out of 4 doubles. Only 1 of the 3 Mixed could be salvaged, giving Andy Penn the only win for the men. It
looks as if this is going to be a difficult year for this team.

Hampshire Junior Restricted Tournaments - September 2011
Report by Hazel Marks
These were played at the Westgate Badminton Centre, Winchester over the weekend of 17th/18th September. There was a generally
good entry for the singles events, but the entries for the doubles events were very disappointing. We moved these events from the
February slot that we had used for a number of years in order to comply with the designated weekend Badminton England set aside for
Junior Restricted Tournaments. They undertake not to schedule other conflicting junior events on this weekend. Unfortunately the junior
coaching sessions do not start up until the beginning of September when the schools go back and, with entries closing a week or so before
the events to allow us to do the draws, there is little time for the players to find themselves partners. Hence the small number of doubles
entries. The Tournament Committee intends to ask Badminton England if they could identify a weekend later in the season for all Counties
to play these events. We are not alone in having problems with this.
The U11 and the U15 events were played on Saturday 17 September. By playing them at the same time the U11 event was made viable
and any U11s or U15s who wanted to play in the next age group up could do so on the Sunday.
U11 Singles:
With only 6 boys and 2 girls entered in the U11 Singles it was decided to let them all play each other, one game to 21 points, in one big
group of 8, at the end of which the boys' results and the girls' could be separated to give individual awards.
Girls' Winner:
Sophie Parvin with 147 points
Boys' Winner:
Carl Smith with 145 points
Girls' Runner-up:
Annie Lado with 125 points
Boys' Runner-up: Locryn Geake with 134 points
The boys may not thank me for letting on that the overall winner of the big group was in fact Sophie and that Annie finished 4th in the
group of 8 – no wonder the girls did not complain!
U11 Doubles:
Sophie and Annie eamed up in the doubles and beat both pairs of boys in straight sets. The boys' pairs played each other and Carl and
Locryn won a really hard-fought match 21/17 18/21 21/19.
Girls' Winners:
Annie Lado/Sophie Parvin with 4 games
Boys' Winners:
Carl Smith/Locryn Geake with 2 games
Boys' Runners-up:
Finley Saunders/Edward Doyle with 1 game
U15 Boys’ Singles:
The biggest entry in any category for the weekend came in this event. The 23 entrants were divided into 4 groups, 3 of 6 players and one
of 5. Only group winners went through to the knock-out section of the event. In the first semi-final Ross Green (Group A) beat Tom Frisby
(Group D) by 21/13 and in the second Alex Horner (Group B) won a very tense match 29/27. This set up a final in which Alex proved a bit
too strong for Ross, running out the winner by 21/15.
Winner:
Alex Horner
Runner-up:
Ross Green
U15 Girls’ Singles:
Libby McMorrow proved too strong for
all her opponents in this 5 girl entry. She
won all her 4 games scoring 84 points,
while dropping only 34 points. Eleanor
Deane won 3 games but could manage
only 10 points against Libby.
Winner:
Libby McMorrow
Runner-up:
Eleanor Deane
Hampshire Badminton 8
U15 Doubles:
With an entry of 7 boys' pairs and just 2 girls' pairs, it was decided to have 2 groups, one of 4 and one of 5. On the day, one boys' pair
dropped out at short notice from the group of 5 and we decided to play 2 groups of 4, with one of the girls' pairs in each group. The girls
came 3rd in each group, proving the point that by U15 the boys have generally grown bigger and stronger than they were at U11. Group
winners Tom Frisby/Ross Green proved to be too strong for Alex Horner/Thomas Hume, winning their final 21/16 21/12. The girls' pairs
played each other in a decider for the title with Libby McMorrow/Lisa Pearson having a fairly easy victory over Emily Kent/Phillipa Abery
by 21/10 21/7
Boys’ Winners:
Tom Frisby/Ross Green (far right)
Boys' Runners-up: Alex Horner/Thomas Hume (near right)
Girls' Winners:
Lisa Pearson/Libby McMorrow
Girls' Runners-up: Emily Kent/Phillipa Abery
15 Mixed Doubles:
At U15 level we would have expected a much bigger entry
than 3 pairs for this event. Those who did enter were
allowed to play best of 3 sets in the group of 3. Tom Frisby/
Libby McMorrow won both their matches in straight sets,
having an easier victory over Jonathan Avery/Eleanor
Deane than they did over Alex Horner/ Lisa Pearson.
However, Jonathan/Eleanor won a close 3 sets decider
against Alex/Lisa, winning 21/13 in the 3rd end.
Winners:
Tom Frisby/Libby McMorrow
Runners-up: Jonathan Avery/Eleanor Deane
This win gave Libby a clean sweep of all 3 events at this age group. Well done, Libby!
The U13 and the U17 events were played on Sunday 18 September. Because we anticipated a lot more boys than girls in
both age groups, we called the boys in for 9am and the girls in for 1pm. This gave plenty of time to fit in all the boys'
matches and the girls could play their singles during the boys' play-offs and part of their doubles. It avoided long rest periods
between matches for all of them.
U13 Boys’ Singles:
There was a very healthy entry of 16 boys to contest the singles title so, with no mixed doubles to offer them, we decided to
give them plenty of action by putting them into 2 big groups of 8. Group A was won by Reuben Shucksmith with 147 points
and the runner-up was Edmund Deane with 145 points. Group B ended with victory for Daniel Williams (147 points) and a
runner-up slot for Will Tuson (144 points). Crossover semi-finals ensued in which Will beat Reuben 21/18 and Daniel beat
Edmund 21/8. The final was worthy of the event and Daniel emerged the victor by 23/21. Well done to both of them!
Winner:
Daniel Williams (below centre)
Runner-up:
William Tuson (below left)
U13 Girls’ Singles:
With 7 competitors in this event it was back to the big group. After 6 rounds of play we had our winner. Lauren Thomas won
all her 6 games, giving her 126 points and only 40 points scored against her. Runner-up Megan Channon won 5 games and
scored 123 points, having lost to Lauren 21/18, and conceded 71 points.
Winner:
Lauren Thomas (above right, in the centre)
Runner-up:
Megan Channon (above right, on the left)
U13 Boys’ Doubles:
This event, with 7 pairs entered, was decided in another big group. Again there were outright winners, Daniel
Williams/Edmund Deane who won all 6 games scoring 126 points. William Tuson/Amir Rahman won 5 games, scored 124
points, having lost the game with Daniel & Edmund 21/19.
Winners:
Daniel Williams/Edmund Deane (below on the right)
Runners-up:
William Tuson/Amir Rahman (below on the left)
U13 Girls’ Doubles:
Only 3 pairs entered this event, a disappointing entry for this age group. Senali Mahagamage/Lauren Thomas won both their
matches totalling 42 points while Megan Channon/Natasha Lado won 12 points in the match against Senali & Lauren and
one other match.
Winners:
Lauren Thomas/Senali Mahagamage (above right, on the right)
Runners-up: Megan Channon/Natasha Lado (above right on the left) Shirley Baker presented the trophies.
Hampshire Badminton 9
U17 Boys’ Singles:
We had another good entry for this event – 15 boys were divided into 3 groups of 5. At the end of the group stage the
winners and runners-up went forward into a knock-out phase and produced a close final:
Quarter-finals: Runner-up C Tom Frisby beat Runner-up B Jason Wong 21/18
Winner B Rudy Beavis beat Runner-up A Sam Bridges 21/16
Semi-finals:
Winner A Nick Downard beat Tom Frisby 21/15
Rudy Beavis beat Winner C Sean Flower 21/10
Final:
Nick Downard beat Rudy Beavis 21/19 (below left, Rudy, Nick and Diana)
U17 Girls’ Singles:
As with the U13 Girls' Singles, the boys played in the morning and the girls came in later – well, there were only 5 of them.
So they played in the one group and results of the group gave us our Winner, Sarah Stannett, with a maximum 84 points and
our Runner-up, Melissa Stride, with 72 points. (above right, Melissa, Sarah and Diana)
U17 Boys’ Doubles:
Only 5 pairs entered this event. With 15 boys in the singles and some non-singles players entered for the doubles, this event
really did support the view that the players had not had time to sort out pairings before entries closed. Four of the five pairs
were very closely matched and finished on 84, 77, 76 and 75 points after their four matches. Steven Smith/Chris Bland (75
points) had in fact won only one game and so finished in 4th place, having lost the other three to 20, 16 and 19 points! But
these events are decided on games won, which meant that Rudy Beavis/Sean Flower won the event with 4 games and 84
points while Nick Downard/Jason Wong were runners-up on 3 games and 77 points.
Winners:
Sean Flower/Rudy Beavis
Runners-up: Nick Downard/Jason Wong
U17 Girls’ Doubles:
For this event the 5 singles players were joined by Katie Frisby who partnered Libby McMorrow. They beat Tanya
Pinto/Eleanor Deane 21/18 21/14, but lost to Sarah Stannett/Melissa Stride 21/8 21/15. Sarah & Melissa also had a
convincing 21/6 21/11 win over Tanya & Eleanor and so took the title.
Winners:
Sarah Stannett/Melissa Stride
Runners-up: Katie Frisby/Libby McMorrow
U17 Mixed Doubles:
With so few girls available it was no surprise that the Mixed Doubles was not a big event. This time the group scores
revealed clear winners in Nick Downard/Sarah Stannett.
Only Rudy Beavis/Libby McMorrow could get into double
figures against them, scoring a creditable 16 points. But
Rudy & Libby, Jason Wong/Melissa Stride and Sean Flower
/Tanya Pinto all took games off each other with the result
that the 3 pairs were tied on 2 games won at the end of
the group. The Runner-up spot went to Rudy & Libby with
78 points leaving Sean & Tanya with 68 and Jason &
Melissa on 65.
Winners:
Nick Downard/Sarah Stannett
Runners-up: Rudy Beavis/ Libby McMorrow
Awarded at the Tournament at the discretion of the Coaches and based on the 2010-11 season:

Unfortunately, Victoria and Kelvin were not present to receive their trophies on the day, but received them
shortly afterwards.
We are indebted to Margaret Houlton for all the work she put into receiving the entries, sorting them, chasing late forms
and presenting the information to the Tournament Committee for the draw. Unless you have run these events you will not
realise just how time consuming the duties of a Tournament Secretary are. Not content with that, she came along on both
days and ran the Bar, serving us most welcome food and drink. Thank you, Margaret! We could not manage without you!
Hampshire Badminton 10
As always it is a difficult decision deciding on tournament dates and having held out against the September date for
several seasons the Tournament Committee obviously felt it was worth at least trying it out, resulting as they say "with
disappointing entries". Never-the-less, a good tournament for these young players with some very tight matches in many
of the events.
Congratulations to the winners in particular but to all the players for some excellent play.

Report of Master’s Activities - by Margaret Houlton
(A name change – we are now masters not veterans)
The season started as usual with the Restricted Tournaments held on 25th September at The Westgate Centre. Mark Seymour
assisted by Caroline refereed the Level events and Horace Mitchell took charge of the Mixed – our thanks for their efforts.
11 pairs of men and 6 pairs of ladies contested the level events in 3 and 2 sections respectively. Dave Brett/Conrad Spry
won a very competitive top section on countback from Dave Pratt/Paul Bishop and Barrie Capell/Jim Grossert – all pairs
winning 2 matches. Paul Shelton/Tony Coombes triumphed in section B but needed 3 sets in each of their 3 matches to secure
the win with Emerson Cumberbatch/Krishna Gurung in 2 nd place. The third section was for 3 pairs of 60 and over Men and
was won by Mike Parratt/Chris Cawthorne with Alan Dixon/Roger Lee in 2 nd place. The Ladies split into sections on age: the
younger group was won by Debbie Miller/Tracy Taylor with Karen Manners/ Kay Sargent as runners up while Linda
Coombes/Diane Fawn were section B winners ahead of Pauline Prior/Pam Stevens.
The Mixed event was expected to be 15 pairs in 3 sections but a last minute entry was accepted giving Horace extra work!
Paul Bishop/Debbie Miller won the top group with Martyn Isherwood/Tracy Taylor as runners-up. As there were now 6 pairs
in section B each match was 2 sets – winners were Paul Shelton/Pam Stevens with Roy Pullen/Nicolette Lock in 2nd place.
Mixed section C was predominantly for the older players and Bob Collier/Linda Coombes prevailed over Chris Cawthorne/
Hazel Smith.
We do need more entries if this tournament is to remain viable – it is for all masters players not just those hoping to
play in team as we put players in sections on ability before age.
The league matches are underway with all the teams having played at least one match. The leagues have been adjusted to
give less travelling, so only 40’s and 50’s have 8 matches this season with 45’s and 65’s playing each county only once
.The 40’s started their season away to Sussex. Mark Mottershaw/Mark Prictoe , Conrad Spry/Paul Bishop and Debbie
Miller/Kay Sargent won all their games while Julie Newbold/Jackie Barron had 2 close matches but lost out in the setting. 3 of
the 4 Mixed went to Hampshire giving them a 9 - 3 victory. Their next match was against Surrey at home. Mark M/Mark P,
Karen Manners/Denise Karnecki and Kay/Jackie won their games whilst Dan Sheppard/Barrie Capell won one game and lost
the other in 3 sets. All the Mixed were won to give an 11 - 1 win. A stronger Sussex team arrived at Westgate for their return
match including a player who had played for Sussex 1 v Hampshire 2. Debbie/Kay and Mark M/Mark P won a level doubles
each but Dan/Nick Lee and Jackie/Jo Francis were unable to add to the score. Mark P/ Kay and Mark M/ Debbie won their
mixed to give a final score of 8 - 4 to Sussex.
The 45’s started their campaign against Berkshire away and recorded a 12 - 0 victory. The team was Denise Karnecki/Karen
Manners, Lesley Barton/Karen Gilbert, Dave Brett/Paul Bishop and Laurie Hillman/Pete Seward. They travelled to Sussex for
their next match. Denise/Lesley and Julie Newbold/Julie Taylor both lost to the Sussex 1st pair while Dave/Paul and
Laurie/Pete won their games to go into the Mixed 6 - 2 up. Several of the players had difficulty keeping on their feet in one
part of the venue but Pete apparently performed some acrobatic skating moves when he went down near the end of his Mixed
match and completed the game playing at the net while Lesley took the back of the court to complete their win - hopefully he
is not out for too long. Laurie/Julie N at one were the only pair to lose their Mixed so a 9 - 3 win. Surrey were the visitors for
the 45’s first home match. Julie N/Julie T had 2 close 3 setters, beating the 2 nd pair and losing to the 1st, while Denise/Karen
M beat the 1st pair and lost to the 2nd. Martyn Isherwood/Dave B won both their games while Paul/Dave Pratt beat the 2nds so
5 - 3 going into the Mixed. Paul/Denise won in 3 and then Dave B / Julie T won 24 - 22 in the third end having been 20 - 17
down to give a 7 - 3 lead before Martyn/Julie N and Dave P/Karen completed a Mixed whitewash for a 9 - 3 winning
scoreline.
The 50’s went to Littlehampton to play Sussex in their first match. Dave Bassett/Steve Royston and Emerson
Cumberbatch/Tony Coombes both beat the home team 2nd pair while losing to the 1 st pair. Lesley Hawkes/Debbie Webb had
2 close 3 setters, beating the 1st pair but losing to the 2nds while Jenny Skilton/Wendy Adam Evans found the opposition too
strong. 5 - 3 down going into the Mixed and unfortunately they were unable to add to the score so a 9 - 3 defeat. Middlesex
Hampshire Badminton 11
were the next opposition at Westgate. Angie Williams/Lesley, Julie Kingston/Paula Bray and Paul Shelton/Dave Bassett won
all their games while Euan Muir/Dave Burrell won 1 so 7 - 1 up before the Mixed. All of these were won for an 11 - 1
victory. The next match was away to Surrey. Krishna Gurung/Steve won both their games but Tony Dave Bassett,
Lesley/Paula, and Angie/Wendy were unable to add to the score. Krishna/Wendy won their Mixed to make the final result 9 3 to Surrey.Could they reverse the Sussex result when they had the home advantage? Paul/Tony beat the 1st pair 25 - 23 in the
3rd end before beating the 2nd pair and Steve/Krishna had 2 wins. Meanwhile Julie/Paula beat the 2 nd pair in 3 ends but
Lesley/Jenny could not add to the score so 5 - 3 up before the Mixed. Steve/Julie and Paul/Lesley won the first 2 Mixed to get
to the winning position and the match ended as a 7 - 5 win.
The 55’s started against a strong Surrey side. Andy Mears/Teli Mendhir and Paul Collins/ Emerson Cumberbatch both beat
the Surrey 2nd pair while their ladies were too strong for Joyce Hood/ Debbie Webb and Jacqui Ward/Pauline Prior.
Teli/Jacqui won their Mixed so a final 9 - 3 scoreline to Surrey. The team then travelled to Kent. Joyce/Debbie won both
their games while Paul/Emerson beat the 2nd pair and lost in 3 to the 1st pair. Sam Armadass/Teli also lost a game in 3 sets and
Hazel Smith/Jacqui completed the team, 5 - 3 down going into the Mixed. Paul/Joyce and Sam/Hazel both won so a 7 - 5
defeat.
The 60’s first match was against Kent at home. Bob Collier/John Davis had 2 3-set matches losing 21 - 23 and 19 - 21 in the
final sets. Mike Parratt/Alan Dixon also lost a 3 setter as Kent won all the Men's games. Mary Lovell/Chris Shawley and
Diane Fawn/Pam Stevens won all the Ladies to keep the score at 4 - 4 going into the Mixed. Bob/Mary, Mike/Diane and
John/Pam all won so a 7 - 5 victory. The team travelled to Sussex for their next match. Pauline Davis/Diane and John/Chris
Cawthorne won both their games while Pam/Chris S. and Bob/Alan both beat the 2nd pairs so 6 - 2 up before the Mixed. These
all went to Hampshire for a 10 - 2 win. Surrey at home were the next opposition. Pauline/Carole Hunt won both their games
while Diane/Chris S beat the 2nd pair 25 - 23 in the third end. Bob/Jim Rumens and John/Chris C were unable to add to the
score so 5 - 3 down when the Mixed started. John/Pauline and Bob/Diane both won while Chris C/Chris S lost in 3 sets so the
final score was 7 - 5 to Surrey.
The 65’s started against a Berkshire team who unfortunately were a man short so Jim Harding filled in to complete their
team. Vicki Betts/Linda Coombes/Mary Lovell won the Ladies easily while Mike Parratt/Duncan Paine/ Peter Coates won all
the Men's. The Mixed went to Hampshire for a 9 - 0 win. The next match was away to Essex. Vick /Linda/Mary again won all
the Ladies while Peter/Duncan/ Jim had 3 setters in the Men's but couldn’t register a win. Peter/ Linda and Duncan/ Vicki won
their Mixed for a 5 - 4 overall win.
The 70’s team was depleted by injuries and late withdrawals for their match against Kent. Peter Corbett won both his Men's
with Jim Harding and Mike Hayes while Rachel Laxton/ Meelee Brulee lost their Ladies in 3 sets: the other ladies' were
conceded to Kent as Carole Cooke filled in to give everyone their full quota of games. 4 - 2 down going into the Mixed and
Peter/Rachel won at 1st but the final score was 6 - 3 to Kent.
The Masters Section has 43 league matches this year and also the Inter County Championship weekend so there are plenty of
opportunities for the older player to play competitive badminton in a friendly manner. There are several new names in the
above report and we can only keep the teams going with new faces coming in, particularly in the lower age group – don’t be
shy about admitting your age! Details can be obtained from Linda Coombes at linda_coombes@sky.com or 01425 657166
or Margaret Houlton at mhoulton@gmail.com or 01962 869443.
And finally – we are moving with the times and next year letters/entry forms will not be posted to
everyone so please ensure we have your email address.
As usual the Masters' players have had a very busy first half to the season with mixed results. However, more wins
than losses and some excellent fighting spirit as shown in some of the long sets won.
As Margaret says, this section relies on players joining as they hit 40, maybe still representing their individual Clubs in
matches but perhaps beginning to bow out to younger players. Either way, it is a fun way to continue playing
competitive badminton, helping to keep fit in the process. Yes I know some of the players get injuries, but so do the
youngsters.

Hampshire Inter-District KO Cup Report in the September Newsletter
Apologies to Jamie Russell for omitting to state that he was captain of the successful Portsmouth & Havant team which won the County Knockout
Tournament last April. I gather he was also ready and willing to stand in for any of his male players that may have been injured during the day's play.
Fortunately for them, that didn't happen so Jamie had to watch from the sidelines.

TEAM WESTGATE
Team Westgate players have had a fantastic start to the season, both home and abroad. Some of their highlights are shown
below:-
AUGUST:
Viki Williams had a great weekend at the Lagenfield International Tournament winning the Girls' Doubles and finishing runnerup in the Mixed. Partnering Jenny Moore (Cheshire) in the Girls' Doubles, they just edged a dramatic final set 22-20 against the
top ranked German pair and whilst playing Mixed with Mike Roe, also of Cheshire, lost a closely fought and tense final set 1721 also against a German pairing. Viki also reached the quarter-finals of the Singles where she lost a close match to the No.1
seeded Danish girl, having knocked out 2 seeds on the way.
SEPTEMBER:
U15 Harlow Golds (a new age band) - Max Flynn, playing in his first tournament of the season, reached the final of the Boys'
Singles and was awarded a Silver Medal. He is now
eligible to play at Gold Star level which is only open to the top 12 - 18 players in the Country
at U.15. Currently only 4 boys at U.14 have qualified for this group which means a testing
time is ahead for Max.
U19 Wimbledon Tournament - Team Westgate fielded two players in this event, Viki
Williams and Lynnlette Aung. In one half of the draw Viki met top seed and England U.19
No.1 Emily Westwood in a box game, who she lost to in 2 close sets. Viki then went on to
beat Emily Jeffs in a close 3 setter, a player who she had never beaten before. Lynnlette
in the other half had 2nd seed Chloe Birch and Alice Feesey in her box and was able to
causes a major upset by beating both players in 3 set battles. She then met in form Claire Weaver (Cumbria) who was the
winner of the Hertfordshire Senior Singles two weeks prior. After a tough 3 set battle, Lynnlette managed to close the 3rd set
out 23 -21 after having match points against her. She then played ex Team Westgate player Kerri Scott in the semi-final,
winning a tough physical game in 3 sets. After taking the 1st set 21-18 in the final against top seed Emily Westwood, Lynnlette
finally lost out to the more experienced Emily in the 3rd set 19-21, after a close cat and
mouse match. In the Doubles Viki had a good run, narrowly losing a close match
against the eventual winners Emily Westwood and her Danish partner in the
quarter-finals.
Cornwall Senior Silver - Sarah Gray (right, with Linda Collins of Cornwall) won
the Ladies' Singles' Plate event and lost in the semi-final of the Ladies' Doubles
to Kelly Holdway/E. Johnson. In the Mixed event she was beaten in a box of five
by John Hepworth/Kelly Holdway.
U17 Essex Silver - Clean sweep for the Team Westgate girls Melissa Stride &
Sarah Stannett. Melissa won the Singles and then went on to win another gold
with Sarah in the Doubles final.
OCTOBER:
U15 Swansea Open - Tom Frisby entered the U.15 event but due to a small entry was moved to the U.17 event. However, he
did well enough to get through his group beating U.17 players, both over 6ft tall, and progressed to the play-offs where he beat
Joshua Pearce 15-11, 15-9, another 6 footer. He eventually lost to Tsung Fong Mo in the semi-finals 15-11, 15-12 and although
not gaining a medal it was a good performance against these older players.
U17 Somerset Bronze - A good weekend for Team Westgate with Libby McMorrow reaching the quarter-finals of the Singles
and winning the Girls' Doubles with partner Charlotte Murray (Dorset).
Rudy Beavis and Alex Horner both reached the semi-finals of the Boys' Singles as did Alex Horner and Tom Hume in the
Boys' Doubles. Rudy Beavis and Sean Flower took the Boy's Doubles title.
U17 Danish Cup - The next generation of Team England badminton talent walked away with the U17 title at the Danish Junior
Cup - but it took a miraculous fight back, and nerves of steel, to secure Gold for the young squad. Team Westgate's interest in
this event was in the form of players Viki Williams and Lynnlette Aung. The England team having beaten North Jutland 8-1,
France 6-3 and Zealand 5-4 now faced a finals day clash with Mid Jutland. Losing both the opening Mixed Doubles and Girls'
Singles encounters Viki then entered the stage winning the second Singles bout with a comfortable straight sets win. With the
match at 4 -2 in Mid Jutland's favour, cue Viki Williams and Lynnlette Aung to spark an English revival with 3 rubbers
remaining. They enjoyed a comfortable straight sets win and with the 1st Boys' Doubles also winning, the scoreline was now 4 4. From the jaws of defeat, Team England stood on the brink of victory that had earlier seemed unlikely. Sean Vendy & Ben
Lane had the unenviable task of playing the highly rated Danish pair of Mathias Bay Smith & Mikkel Overgaard. Taking the 1st
end 21 - 13 they then trailed the Danish pair 14 - 19 before clawing back the points to 20 - 20. Their heroic effort was then
Hampshire Badminton 14
completed as they took the set 27 - 25, the tie and the title. Congratulations to Viki and Lynnlette for being part of this
winning team.
U17 Winchester Bronze - Westgate's first U17 Bronze Tournament of the season proved a great success for Team Westgate,
winning three of the four available Winner's places.
In the Boys' Singles Rudi Beavis won the event beating David Garcia (Dorset) in the final, David having beaten Sean Flower
25-23 in the semi-final. Sean then teamed up with Rudi to win the Boys' Doubles. Libby McMorrow won the Girl's Singles
beating Abbie Jolliffe 22 - 20 in a hard fought final.
U17 Gold Cwmbran - Melissa Stride received a bronze medal in the singles losing to Terri-Lee Holmes 21-18 21-19 in the
semi-finals. Partnering Sarah Stannett in the Doubles, the girls got to the finals by beating the 1st seeds Zoe Hallam & Chloe
Rothery in 3 sets in their box, but lost out to the 2nd seeds Zoe Balfour and Terri-Lee Holmes in the final and received silver
medals.
Dorset Senior Silver - Melissa Stride was knocked out in the 1st round of the Singles but then went on to win the Plate event.
Partnering Phillippa Broadbent she then reached the semi-finals of the Girls' Doubles event.
U17 Essex Silver - Melissa Stride won gold in the Singles getting through her box with no opponent getting into double
figures. The semi-finals saw a win of 15-10 15-9 against Kirsty Muddel before winning 15-3 15-4 against Neelam Kaur in the
final. This win gave Melissa her gold grading.
Teaming up with Sarah Stannett she then went on to win gold in the Girls' Doubles beating 2nd seeds Catherine Baialey and
Rebecca Terry in the final 15-9 15-5.
U17 Swiss Open - England's exciting new generation of U17 and U19 badminton talent took to the courts at the Lausanne
Junior International tournament and returned with an impressive haul of medals. In the U17 events Viki Williams with her
partner Michael Roe lost in the final of the Mixed Doubles to English team mates Alex Lane and Chloe Birch. Lynnlette Aung
lost out to Cham-Lam in the final of the Girl's Singles and took a second Silver medal when she reached the final of the Girls'
Doubles with partner Jess Hopton.
NOVEMBER
Wimbledon Open Gold Senior - A few of Team Westgate's players took part in this top grading senior tournament,
completing against some of the top 25 senior players in the country. Viki Williams, currently ranked 35 came up against 4th
seed and number 9 ranked player Helen Lewezynska in the first round, narrowly losing in three sets. Lynnlette Aung, ranked
36, had a slightly easier first match against Laurer Mercer (Yorkshire) and ranked 24, winning comfortably in two sets. She then
met 3rd seed Georgina Bland, ranked 7 and playing on her home ground. Georgina's game had very few unforced errors and
she took the match 21-11 21-18. Viki and Lynnlette both went on to lose in the quarter final stages of the Girls' Doubles.
Senior Silver at Oxford - Success for the new Team Westgate player Ira Banerjee, moved recently from the North of England
to train in Winchester. In the Singles Ira beat the 2nd seeded player but couldn't continue her good form in the next round.
However, with U15 England team mate Jess Pugh she won the Doubles, this being her best ever result in an adult tournament.
Loughborough U17 Golds - Two Golds for Team Westgate at the Loughborough Gold and Gold Star under 17. In the U17
Gold event Melissa Stride and Sarah Stannett played in the Singles and together in the Doubles. In the Singles Melissa
progressed through the group stage and then lost to Keady Smith from Ulster in the quarter-finals. Sarah did well to knock out
2nd seed Abbey Bower in her group to set up a semi-final match against the talented youngster Joshmyn Bong (Bucks). Sarah
did well to come back after losing a close 1st set to level the match and then went on to apparently win the match in the third.
The result was contested by Joshmyn, claiming that Sarah had not yet reached 21 ! After some discussion and consultation
with the referee an unusual decision to go back to 11-10 to Joshmyn, the score at which they had changed ends in the third set,
was made. With Sarah not quite recovering from this decision, Joshmyn upped her game to claim the end 21 - 14 and gain her
place in the final. Sarah and Melissa, a much improved doubles pair, played well against much more experienced pairings but
failed to progress through this event. Lynnlette Aung and Jess Hopton met the very talented U.15 Danish Cup and Oxford
Senior Silver winning pairing of Ira Banerjee and Jess through to the final and also winning that match in two sets. In the Gold
Star singles a major upset ensued with top seed Lynnlette Aung meeting strong opposition from team mate Ira Banerjee and
Joshway Bong. All three players won just one game in the grou0p stage but on point countback it was Lynnlette who went
through setting up a rematch with her doubles partner Jess Hopton in the semi-final. Lynnlette was keen to prove herself after
losing to Jess in the UK school games and quickly gained superiority in a close fought first game before dominating the second.
This set up a final against the Irish No.1 Alannah Stephenson which Lynnlette won 21-16 21-14 after showing great
determination in a very physical game.
North Wales U15 Silver - Tom Frisby won the NE Wales U15 Silver after regaining his composure to serve out the final game
at Wrexham against Scott Oatts (Wales) 15-8 16-14.
A very busy time for some of our Hampshire & Westgate players with excellent results. Good luck for the rest of the
season as it takes dedication to combine studies with badminton at this level.

Shot Choice Badminton Club
Report by Janet Cheeseman
This was Shot Choice Badminton Club's first Portsmouth area tournament. It was played on 27 October 2011.
All Clubs and Schools in the area were invited, resulting in a great turnout with children of all ages and abilities
taking part. 69 boys and 18 girls entered, allowing us to have 4 groups of Boys' Singles, 2 groups of Girls' Singles,
3 groups of Boys' Doubles and 1 of Girls' Doubles.
Despite the large number of games played, the day ran smoothly with all the players thoroughly enjoying
themselves and although there were mixed abilities there were some very close and excellent games including
some of the finals which went to 3 ends and setting.

The Tournament was a success due to a number of reasons, not least the support and sponsorship from
southern England companies. The main sponsor was HCE Food Services but also First Choice
Catering Spares, BWF Fabrication and Rackets Plus.
Secondly but equally important was the hard work and organization of Jan & Andy Cheeseman and Pauline
Stretton, Shot Choice badminton coaches, and all the volunteers who helped on the day, Ben Muir Level 2 Coach,
Craig Muir Level 1 Coach, Holly Phillips, Annie Vokes and Mel Channon all working towards their Level 1, and
Kate Geddes, Gill Williams, Lauren Williams and Cormac Foley all Shot Choice adult and junior club volunteers.
There was a special trophy awarded for player of the day.
Attributes required were fair play, attitude, ability, and what we believe is the X factor!
We would like to congratulate the Club coaches, teachers and parents for making this a very difficult decision due
to the high all round standard of the players but after a lot of discussion it was agreed that the trophy be awarded to
Megan Channon. The trophy was presented by Ben Muir, Hampshire’s No.1 Singles' Player. Ben, who is
currently training full time at Wimbledon's High Performance Centre, when presenting the trophy said he had
happily given up his training day to support his Club and local community and his words would no doubt inspire
many of the players to aim for his achievements. Congratulations to Megan for winning this award.

I would like to mention that a number of invites went out to organizations within badminton and the local
community and I am pleased to say that all attended on the day. Thanks go to the following people for their
support.
Blake Simmons, Badminton England.
Alan and Shirley Baker, Hampshire Badminton.
Louise Kessle, Premier League for Sport (Portsmouth).
Madeleine Campbell, Schools Sport Partnership - without her support we may not have had such a good response
from local schools.
Finally and most of all, I would like to say thank you to all the players for taking part and for their pleasant
attitude and enjoyment which was demonstrated on the day.
I look forward to seeing you all again next year!
Well done to Shot Choice for organising what appears to have been a very successful and enjoyable tournament. EDITOR
