Year 3/4 Public Speaking Term 1
You will need to prepare and present two speeches this term. Please see the table on
the reverse side of this sheet to check when your speeches are due.
Prepared Speeches
The duration for both Year 3 and Year 4 speeches should be 3 minutes. Make sure you
have your speech prepared and ready to deliver on the correct day. You should
thoroughly practise your speech at home.
First Prepared Speech: Free Choice
This term, your first prepared speech will be on a topic of your own choice. Remember
that your speech should not just simply be an information report. You should be
delivering your own opinion, point of view, or attempting to persuade the audience in
a certain way. You will be marked on: topic (did you choose an interesting topic?),
style (was there an effective introduction, did you include interesting details, did you
deliver your own opinion or point of view, did you effectively conclude the speech?),
palm cards (key words only, do not read word for word), time (did your speech reach
the time limit?), eye contact (did you maintain eye contact with the audience
throughout most of your speech?), volume (did you use an expressive voice and speak
loud enough for everyone to hear?), and stance (did you stand in a confident
manner?).
Second Speech: Persuasive
Your second prepared speech will be a spoken persuasion. You may` choose any topic
to argue. If you need some inspiration or ideas, try googling “persuasive speech topics
for kids” and you will find lots to choose from. You will be marked on: topic (did you
choose an interesting topic?), structure & content (outlining the issue and your point
of view, a series of arguments with supporting evidence and restating your position
and main argument to conclude), organisation (this includes being prepared with your
speech on the correct day, palm cards and length of speech), and presentation (how
well you deliver your speech e.g eye contact, volume, expression and stance).
