Classes and sports fill the 8:30 AM – 5:00PM school day. In grades 9 and 10, the English
focus is on learning how to read critically and how to write short essays. As sophomores,
all students receive 100 hours of additional weekend math and English tutoring to prepare
for MCAS tests, and the partnership with MIT allows for Summer Academy for those
who need. In grades 11 and 12, students concentrate on learning to handle more complex
subject matter and learning demands, such as AP History, and AP and Boston University
courses.
At the nucleus of this success story is the school’s Corps tutoring program. The school
hires recent college graduates to work with students for part of every day. Corps
members spend a year living in dorms on the top-floor of the school, receive a modest
allowance, pay minimal rent, and work with four students throughout the year.
