Pan’s Labyrinth Permission Slip
The Honors American Literature class will be viewing the 2006 film, Pan’s Labyrinth, in
coordination with the novel Slaughterhouse-Five. The film is rated ‘R’ for ‘graphic
violence and some language’—the violence mainly comes through depictions of war.
This film deals with many of the themes and literary techniques discussed during the
reading of the novel. Most importantly, the film, like the novel, illustrates how humans
use Science Fiction and Fantasy as a way to cope with the traumatic events of war. The
movie will allow us to see that Kurt Vonnegut is writing in a tradition that is very old and
very human.
There will be a comparative essay between the novel and film. (That assignment can be
