Chapter 5 and 6 Extended Assessments
Directions: You will need to complete all of the following activities listed below.
Each activity will be worth 15-20 assessment points. Not all activities will be
assigned at once, so will have different due dates. However, if you would like to
work ahead please feel free. Next to your name for each activity please put what
activity number it is before you turn it in. For each day late a point will be taken off
of each assessment that is turned in late. Extensions will only be granted in
extreme cases (hypothetically if it is assigned on a Monday and you miss Tuesday
and Wednesday it will still be due on the regular due date). Plagiarism will result in
a zero for the assessment.
Activity #1
You have just opened up a new landscaping shop that sells the four types of
igneous rocks (mafic/basaltic, ultra mafic/ultrabasic, felsic/granitic, and
intermediate). You need to create a full page advertisement that includes all four
types of igneous rocks, properties of each type (amount of silica, minerals present
and physical description) and at least 3 examples of each rock type (if it is
intrusive/extrusive and crystal size) . Your advertisement should be in color, have
pictures of each type of igneous rock (can be computer generated pictures), be
hand drawn (with the exception of the rock pictures), and include the name of your
shop, address, and phone number. (20 points)
Due Date: ________
Activity #2
Draw and color a picture of the rock cycle. You may not use pictures of rocks you
must use symbolic pictures that remind you of the three types of rocks. Be sure to
include magma and sediment in your rock cycle (you should have five pictures
total). You need to include all labels for each picture and all arrows should be
labeled (Please use the picture on the board as your guide. You will have seven
labeled arrows.). Your picture must be hand drawn. (15 points)
Due Date:__________
Activity # 3
Activity #3 Create a lab over the rock cycle that you could present to elementary
students. Your lab should show how one type of rock such as metamorphic can
change into magma, igneous rock, sediment, sedimentary rock, and then back to
metamorphic rock. You obviously don’t have the resources to melt an actual rock,
so you need to think of common everyday materials that could represent a rock and
the processes that change it. Please make sure you include the following in your
lab: problem, objective (what you want the student to learn), material list, step-bystep procedure (at least five steps), at least two questions that somebody should
be able to answer after preforming your lab. (15 points)
Due Date: __________
Activity #4 Option A
Your teacher just found out she is going to miss one day next week. She knows
how you like to take charge of the class. She decides to give you the task of
teaching your classmates the rock cycle while she is away. Before she leaves you
in charge, you need to provide her with a detailed written explanation of the rock
cycle with information about each rock type. You must first give students
background information about the three major rock types. Explain how each rock is
formed, basic information about each rock type (how they are classified,
vocabulary, and examples); include understanding that the rock cycle is a process
that is a continuous cycle, and who proposed the rock cycle in an essay format.
Your explanation should be 6 paragraphs long (Introduction, body (sedimentary,
igneous, and metamorphic), and a conclusion). Remember plagiarism is when you
copy or reword somebody else’s work. Why the facts are all the same your essays
should not be. You must cite all sources. (20 points)
Due Date: __________
Activity #4 Option B
You will need to create one poem or song about all three types of rocks and the
rock cycle or create four different poems/songs one about each type of rock and the
rock cycle. Make sure your lyrics include how that rock is formed, characteristics of
each rock, examples of each rock type, vocabulary terms associated with each type
of rock, information about the rock cycle, and classification within each type of rock
(ex. igneous: granitic, basaltic, ultra basaltic, and intermediate. Sedimentary:
chemical, clastic, and biochemical. Metamorphic: foliated and nonfoliated). If you
choose to do four poems/songs each poem must be a minimum of 30 words. If you
choose to do one poem/song it must be a minimum of 120 words. Repeating lyrics
do not count towards minimum number. I would start by jotting down information
about each rock then put in a poem/song. You must cite all sources. (20 points)
