“One day people will be able to talk to each other using a computer,” said
a teacher as she pointed to a picture of two computers connected by a wire. She
stood in a room full of five-year-old boys and girls who were all trying to imagine
what talking through a computer would be like. Twenty-five years later those
same people would not be able imagine life without this invention. Throughout
history there have been many inventions that drastically changed life, but there
are a few that stand above the rest.
It was a blistering, cold day and the forecasted thunderstorms were
moving into the city. Rita and her mother, Sharon, were driving down the foggy
freeway, barely able to see the yellow lines. All of a sudden, an insane driver
forced their car off the road, making them hit a tree that appeared to be the size
of the Statue of Liberty. Rita was violently thrown from the car, and her mom
saw that she was hurt badly. Sharon immediately pulled out her cell phone to
contact the paramedics. What would she have done if she didn’t have the phone
with her? This invention, along with many other advancements in technology,
have helped to make life better for people all around the world.
“Man, I’m tired,” Alex stated as he arrived at his village. He had just
walked three miles from the market, and it appeared that this journey would
become part of his daily routine. Alex could only buy what his parents were
going to cook because any extra food would spoil without the use of ice. Alex
remembered learning about something called a “refrigerator” and hoped that they
would soon receive these mysterious objects in the village. Years later, his
wishes were granted, and Alex could gather a week’s supply of groceries in one
trip. The convenience offered by the refrigerator and many other inventions have
improved the standard of living for many people across the globe for centuries.
Stage 6: Compose a concluding paragraph.
Concluding Paragraphs
1. Restate the thesis in different words.
2. Make reference to the introductory paragraph.
3. End with a deep question.
Life in this world will never be the same after the introduction of these
significant inventions. It is amazing how something that was simply being
imagined by a room of five-year-olds became something that everyone would not
want to live without. After examining the tremendous effects of these inventions,
one cannot help but wonder what invention will change the world next?
The quality of everyone’s life has been improved by these inventions. Just
as Sharon’s cell phone helped her in a dire situation, these inventions help
people everyday. It all makes one wonder, how would life in 2008 be different
without these inventions?
No one could ever imagine living without these huge inventions that have
made such a great impact on our lives. We are living in a world that caters to our
needs, and offers us everything at our fingertips. Could you imagine living in a
world that could not provide us with all the things that we consider necessities in
today’s society?
Stage 7: Put introduction, body, and conclusion together.
