Fourth & Last! Essay Assignment:
SPRING 2008 EN001/34388
Turn in typed, DS , four page essay with all planning
& this sheet on _______________ 2008 @1:30pm
Purpose: To explore cause & effect, & to inform
In thinking about Cause and Effect, we are concerned with “Why?” We learned not to assume that the last
thing that happens (chronology) is not necessarily and many times, NOT, the cause (causation) – a chain of
causes may be traced. We discussed Newton’s First Law of Motion: “Moving objects will move forever, and
resting objects will rest forever, unless some outside force acts upon them, and science. There are answers…we
just don’t know them all; sometimes we don’t even know the question! One thing about the book,
Why Cats Paint, is that the authors/photographers/publishers decided to set up an intricate kind of CatWorld
activity that they could put into action & observe. Why? Maybe for entertainment & money; the inside cover
of the book suggests that cats are curious & playful, they often mark their territory, and acrylic paints smell a lot
like litter boxes? As simple as that.
Develop at least a five paragraph essay, using a Cause/Effect analysis, with all the frills we’ve discussed so far, i.e.,
academic-style title, creative intro {FARSQ}, blueprint thesis sentence. Using effective transitions, a logical
development for each category of comparison/contrast, effective adjectives, action verbs (not “to be”), and
devices providing SYNESTHESIA (engaging the readers’ senses) (alliteration, metaphor, simile, imagery),
write in the objective (no “you”) 3rd person, from one of these topics:
1) See “Man of Honor” (ignore errors), p166-167 in book: explain why Edward James Olmos is one of the most
influencial Hispanic-Americans in the U.S. (three examples)
OR 2 Do symbols on closthing draw people (or you) to, or make you avoid, others on campus and/or at
work? Example: political slogans, gang-related or violence-related symbols or phrases, music-related, etc.
In your opinion, is a symbol so powerful that it cannot be changed, i.e., will the Nazi swastika (or designs
similar to it) ever be accepted in most of the world where it is deemed to represent EVIL?
OR 3) What are three long-term effects of being bullied (for males &/or females)?
OR 4) What three factors enable law enforcement officers to enforce city or county laws? (There may be
many factors, just choose three important & logical ones to discuss.)
