Course Description:
This course is designed to be the equivalent of a freshman college course. The students
will analyze and interpret United States history from the Age of Exploration to the Civil
War. Emphasis will be placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing,
interpretation of primary source documents, and creation of visual and written projects
synthesizing learning. Students will use technology beyond that demanded in regular
level classes, conduct independent research using primary and secondary sources,
respond to document-based questions, and complete self-reflection activities as part of
the honor’s requirement.

Sample Course Activities:
Respond to document-based questions in all units of study.
Use reading strategies to complete the reading of primary sources for each unit of study.
Write an analysis of literature and journals of the time period being studied.
Analyze aspects of the Revolutionary War and the Articles of Confederation (Unit 2)
Participate in a class debate on four major issues that faced the New Republic. (Unit 3)
Write an analysis paper on the “revolution of 1800.” (Unit 3)
Evaluate political cartoons of the time periods being studied.
Explain the philosophy and results of Manifest Destiny on racial and ethnic groups. (Unit
4)
Research primary source documents and write an essay on “What Caused Secession?’
(Unit 5)
Respond to document-based questions regarding the Civil War and the Reconstruction
period. (Unit 6)

Course Curriculum Map:
Unit 1: Discovery and Exploration
The student will compare and contrast the European influences on the western
hemisphere including Native Americans. (SS2.2, SS5.3)
3 ½ weeks
Unit 2: Revolution Leads to a New Nation
The student will analyze the political and economic frustration the colonists demonstrated
toward Great Britain and the way their perseverance led to the creation of the United
states. (SS2.2, SS2.4)
3 weeks
Unit 3: The Federalist and Jeffersonian Eras
The student will compare, contrast, and analyze the political views of the Federalists and
the Democratic Republicans through debate and in writing. (SS1.1, SS2.2, SS3.3, SS3.4)
Through independent research and using technology and other resources, the student will
evaluate the transition from the Federalist Era to the Jeffersonian Era. (SS2.5, SS3.1,
SS7.1, SS7.2, SS7.5)

Unit 4: Jacksonian Democracy and Manifest Destiny
Using technology and other resources to locate political cartoons, the student will
evaluate how Jackson’s presidency expanded the power of the executive office. (SS2.5,
SS7.1, SS7.2)
Through independent research and development of a series of maps, the student will
evaluate how the philosophy of Manifest Destiny led to territorial expansion in the
United States and its impact on racial and ethnic groups living in the territory. (SS2.4,
SS5.3)

Unit 5: The Growth of Sectinalism
The student will analyze the causes that divided the nation. SS2.2, SS4.4, SS5.3)

Unit 6: Civil War and Reconstruction
The student will analyze how and why the Union defeated the Confederacy. (SS2.2,
SS6.5)
The student will examine the Congressional Reconstruction Plan and its effect on
Freedmen. (SS2.2, SS6.2)

Unit 7: The Gilded Age
The student will measure and analyze the effects of industrialization on American society
including women, men, and the disabled. The student will complete independent
research on a giant of industry and orally present it to class (SS2.3, SS2.5, SS4.3, SS6.2)
