clinical practice. Preference will be given to applicants whose proposed research
project has arisen directly from problems identified in your clinical practice, or
where the results of the research could be applied directly in your clinical work.

This month's featured resource: Issue 23, (1 November 2007)
Nieva, V.F., et al, From science to service: A framework for the transfer of
patient safety research into practice, Advances in Patient Safety
Key messages:
- Moving research into practice involves three key stages: creating and distilling
knowledge; disseminating it; and having knowledge adopted and institutionalized
by the end user.
- "Real-world" knowledge about the end user's work environment, motivations
and day-to-day challenges can also help get research used.
- When introducing new procedures to facilitate research use, attention must be
paid to the resulting changes to staff responsibilities, power structures and
processes - otherwise the new procedures are likely to fail..

13. National Primary Care Research and Development Centre report,
"Evaluation of closer to home demonstration sites"
A key government objective in reform of the English National Health Service
(NHS) is to move health services from acute hospitals into the community and so
bring care closer to home. In 2006, a series of 30 demonstration sites were
selected in six specialties: Dermatology, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), General
Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Urology. This report summarises the
experiences of these demonstration sites from an evaluation carried out between
September 2006 and May 2007 by the National Primary Care Research and
Development Centre of the University of Manchester and the Health Economics
Facility of the University of Birmingham. The evaluation included: interviews with
managers and others at all sites; qualitative case studies in 12 sites; economic
case studies in 6 sites; and patient questionnaire surveys at all sites.
