Re: Guidelines for Reading Lesson (S1-3)
1. Venue: Library
2. Procedures:
**We schedule 2 lessons for each book so STEPS ‘a’ – ‘e’ are for the 1st lesson,
STEPS ‘f’-‘h’ are for the 2nd lesson.
a. Pre-teach students a page of the ERS report book (preferably done in the
classroom). Ask students to focus on filling in that page of book report while
they are reading the book in the Lib.
b. Take Ss to Lib., assign them a seat (that stays the same throughout the term).
4 persons in a group. (2 groups of students sit at one table for all classes
except 1A, 2B & 3B.) Assign a table leader for each table.
c. Table leaders get ERS books of the right level for the table of students to
save time (about 25 books for 8 students to choose from). Allocate 5 mins.
for students to settle with a book.
d. Allow them to read the book for 20 mins.
e. Ss should then borrow the book home to finish filling in the designated
book report. They should do the registration on their way to classroom.
Remind Ss to bring back their book & Book Report Book for the second
lesson.
* second lesson
f. Students bring their Book Report Book and ERS book to the Lib. They have
to group together (same seat every lesson) and take turn to tell their
groupmates what they have filled in the book report. T should assign who the
interviewers are & who the interviewees are each time. Recordings can be
done. Oral marks can be given for the tape recording.
g. T walks around and makes sure the task is done properly.
h. Teacher randomly gets students to present orally their book reports in front of
the whole class. Ss return their books to library by the end of the second
lesson.
i. A competition should be held every 2 cycles for one book report. Prizes
should be given. Good book reports can be displayed in the classroom.
j. An extension activity → Ss have to do a web page introducing their book;
prize given every month.
k. Winning web page will be shown in the Lib. regularly with Ss presenting the
book and their report.
l. All recordings of discussion & book reports will be counted into CA.
