SPEECH CLASS
Mr. Guay
THE EULOGY
Overview:
 You have been selected by the family of a fictional character from TV, film, literature,
cartoons, etc, to deliver the memorial speech at that character’s funeral service.
 Eulogies are formal speeches that combine snapshot memories of the person’s life,
commentary about the legacy or impact that person has made, and the lasting
impression that person’s presence has made on all of us. Eulogies are usually uplifting
and often humorous pieces that lighten the mood of an otherwise somber moment.
They can often be created and delivered in a theme or style that befits the one being
memorialized.
Speech Parameters:
 Timing: None – you are on your own to create something within your own ability to
control it
 Type: This is a full original oratory. The only one of its kind for the class. Your speech
must be fully written out, preferably typed and not folded into your pocket before your
delivery, ready to be submitted upon completion.
 Key things to focus on:
o Select a character from TV, film, literature, etc, that you have a particular like
and knowledge of. The character in question must be fictional.
o Brainstorm a series of memories/images that character has presented to you in
your encounter with him/her. These snapshots will indicate your knowledge of
this character’s “life”. Choose the most vivid or “telling” memories.
o Open with a general thank you to the family and a welcome to those present.
Your speech is being delivered to those in the audience who already have
knowledge of the person, so defining him or her is not necessary.
o Highlight the essence of the “memory” of that person – what overall, lasting
legacy or impact as that character left on you and the audience
o Don’t be afraid to keep the commentary “light” or humorous since eulogies often
serve as comic relief. But also don’t turn it into a stand-up comedy routine.
o Prepare the speech, using the relative “formality” of the memorial service as a
guideline to both your composition and your delivery style.
 You can get extra credit points for dressing for the occasion. Details in class.
Evaluation/Grades:
 Standard commentary, as always, applies.
 Additional emphasis being placed on the appropriate content of the material along with
the focus on the formality of the delivery.

 100 points for the speech
 50 points for the composition of the speech
 Up to 5% bonus for dressing for the occasion
 Definite order will be established, with no EC for early delive ry.
