Short Story Five: "The Artist" by Rabindranath Tagore
This is a truly provocative story. The issue of which makes life more meaningful, art or
money, is cleary the focus.

1. Read pages: 1190-1197.
2. Answer questions 1-8 in the "Interpreting" Section. Use complete sentences and
answer in 1 or 2 sentences.
3. For question #9 your full-length response answer the following in the form of a 3
paragraph essay. Provide a brief introduction. Put your thesis statement as your last
sentence in the introduction. Develop a full body paragraph discussing your topic with
specific references to the story. Add on a brief conclusion paragraph that summarizes
your key points and restates your thesis.
4. Your topic: Discuss the main theme of "The Artist". State the theme and provide
evidence (through specfic examples and details) to support your analysis.
5. NOTA BENE: Important: In your resources file there is an introduction to paragraph
and essay writing which will help you plan and write this first brief paper.
