had been murdered by the King of Thrace for the gold that he had taken with him when
his father had sent him there for protection during the Trojan War.
Delos- they rested on the Island of Apollo. Apollo prophiesed to Aeneas about his
future homeland. The Trojans move on.
Passes by the islands of Naxos, Paros, and the Cyclades
Crete- Aeneas and his people planted crops and spent time here until a famine and
plague hit and Aeneas was told to move on by his household gods.
Strophanes (Turning Island)- here they met the Harpies. After battling the
Harpies, the Queen of the Harpies prophesied that they would be so hungry when they
reached their final destination that they would eat their plates.
Leucate (Leucas)- rested here for a year.
Epirus (Chaonia)- hosted by King Helenus (one of the sons of King Priam who
survived the war) and his queen, Andromache, who was the widow of Hector. Aeneas
was happy to learn of their fate.
Helenus prophiesed that when the Trojans saw a sow and 30 suckling pigs that they
would know that they had arrived in the promised land. He also warned them about the
dangers of Charybdis and Scylla.
Sicily (Mt. Aetna)- Aeneas and crew encountered the Cyclopes. Frightened, they
sailed away.
Sicily (Drepanum)- Anchises, the father of Aeneas, dies and is buried here.
Carthage- a storm carries them from Sicily to Carthage on the north coast of Africa.
Here they are warmly welcomed by Queen Dido. The queen falls in love with Aeneas
and offers to make him king. Mercury comes to Aeneas in a dream and tells him to leave
because this was not the promised land. When Dido watches Aeneas sail away she utters
a curse against the Trojans and then kills herself.
Sicily- Aeneas and crew land and hold funeral games in remembrance of Anchises.
Hera causes the women to burn the ships. Aeneas saves 3 ships and sails toward Italy,
leaving behind those who do not want to proceed further.
Passes by the Sirens
Italy (Cumae)-visits the Sibyl (prophetess) here. She instructs him to find the Golden
Bough and offer sacrifice in order to enter the Underworld. She accompanies him to the
River Styx. He crosses to enter the Underworld and finds his dead father in a beautiful
flowery field. Anchises tells him about the future of Rome.
Passes by Circe's island
Italy(Latium)- they finally arrive in the promised land. The Trojans are welcomed by
King Latinus, King of the Latins. The king offers Aeneas his daughter, Lavinia, in
marriage. Hera places hatred in the hearts of Queen Amata and Turnus, the fiance of
Lavinia. Turnus declares war on the Trojans. Aeneas seeks neighboring allies to fight
with him. A long and bloody war ensues. Aeneas and his Trojans win in the end and
make peace with the Latins. Aeneas marries Lavinia and they call their new settlement,
Lavinium.
