Chapter 19
“Grand”
Meets Old Carl Luce at the Wicker Bar
Information about his parents. Shows concern about getting the ax

Asks Luce about his sex life. Speaks loudly again.
Meets two nuns.
Asks Luce questions about relationships/”I can never get sexy –
really sexy – with a girl I don’t like a lot”
Glimpse into how well-read Holden really is.
Luce suggests a psychoanalyst—his father is one
More affected by Mercutio’s death than Romeo or Juliet.
Chapter 20
Feelings about money.
Gets really drunk and imagines that there is a bullet in his guts again.

Calls Sally to tell her that he will come and decorate the tree

Goes to the park to try and find the ducks/ “lake is partly frozen and

Helps a little girl with her skate key.

Wasn’t able to attend Allie’s funeral because “I had to go to the
hospital and all after I hurt my hand.”
Only good part about dying is mother would not let Phoebe come to
his funeral

Chapter 21
His mother is a light sleeper ever since Allie died. She never sleeps.
Likes the way that Phoebe—and all kids—looks when she’s sleeping

Mr. Antolini tells Holden that he’s going to have a “terrible fall” and
his advice/ “the mark of the immature man…”
Holden wakes up to Mr. Antolini “patting or petting” his head
Chapter 25
Phoebe—“She’s very affectionate”
Begins to think that maybe he was wrong about Mr. Antolini
Phoebe very astute, realizes that Holden is not home on Wednesday.
Thinks he has cancer
Holden’s plan to run away to Colorado
Chapter 22
Feels like he’s disappointed Phoebe and explains to her why he hates
Pencey
Starts to think he’s disappearing as he’s crossing street. Asks Allie
for help/ “Allie, don’t let me disappear.”
Writes a note to Phoebe to tell her to meet him, and that he’s leaving
“You don’t like anything!”
Sees “Fuck You” written on the steps of Phoebe’s school/impossible
to rub out all of the “Fuck You”s in the world
Tells the story of James Castle

Calls up Mr. Antolini. Mr. Antolini not much older than DB.

“The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you
have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall
off, but it’s bad if you say anything to them.”
Phoebe gives Holden her Christmas money/Holden gives Phoebe her
hat
Holden tells that he went home after carrousel/ “I felt so damn
happy”
