-Read Luke 10:17-19
-Pretext
-Jesus training His disciples
-Sent them out to heal/drive out demons/preach the KOG
-They return in verse 17
-What is Jesus talking about?
-Literal snakes & scorpions? We have authority over animals, but why test your faith or God?
-Crafty people? We are not given authority over other people
-Demonic forces
-Context is demons and Satan
-"over all the power of the enemy" Who is our enemy? Satan
-The work of demons
-Lion: 1 Peter 5:8 (roaring lion)
-Devours people
-Dangerous and deadly
-Hunts quietly until it kills with violence
-Most powerful creature (of that region)
-Snake: Gen 3 (serpent & eve)
-Sneaky, hides well
-Hunts quietly
-Gets into anything
-Fairly defenseless until poised
-Angel: 2 Cor 11:14 (masqurades as angel light)
-Beautiful
-Wise
-Powerful
-Benevolent
-Active deception and sin
-Demon tempts you to sin by lying
-No one will know
-This isn't so bad
-You deserve this
-You sin, demon gets rights to you
-Demon tempts harder and dulls our ability to hear HS
-Not all temptation is demonic (Jas 1:14, own lusts tempt us)
-Passive deception & assault
-Either a deceived person, a demoniacally manifested event or "bad luck" hurts you
-Usually in children
-Negative emotions (fear, anger, rage, hopelessness) let demon in
-Demon tempts you more and dulls your ability to hear HS
-Not everything bad is demonic, but much is that we ignore
-We are given authority over demons!
-How do we stop him?
-Defensively
-Armor of God Eph 6:14-18
-Truth to fight the devil's lies
-Understanding of your righteousness so devil can't trap you with guilt/shame
-Gospel to remind you of your freedom and authority
-Faith to prevent deception of fear
-Word which we use to defend against lies (Jesus & temptations)
-Prayer for protection, pray in the spirit for unknown attacks
-Offensively
-The Word
-Sword of the Spirit
-Jesus' name above all names, but Word above the name
-Our words
-How did Jesus remove demons? He commanded them. (luke 4:33) (desert temptation)
-How did disciples remove demons? They commanded them.
-How should we remove demons? Plead? Beg? Ignore? Ask God?
-COMMAND!
-So what do you do?
-If tempted to DO something
-Seek escape route (early on) and command demon to leave (by name)
-Continue to fight spiritually and with words until temptation passes
-Out loud is best, internally is fine
-If tempted to FEEL something
-Take captive wrong thoughts & feelings
-Replace them with correct words (scriptures)
-Command demon to leave by name
-No matter what
-Praise God: best kind of spiritual warfare
-Newsboys "He Reigns" - powers of darkness trembled & can't drown out a single word
-God is enthroned in our praises (Ps 22:3) and Satan can't be where God is enthroned
-Praise in dark circumstances or temptation will remove demons
-That's why churches must be places of praise, not of sin
-Some warnings
-Acts 19:13 - Sons of Sceva - Using Jesus' name works out of a relationship with Him
-Mat 8:5-10 - Centurion - being under authority gives you authority (Jesus under God)
-Covering of authority
-Mk 9:29 - Prayer & fasting - Spiritual preparedness & close relationship with Jesus
-Don't get paranoid, but be aware and take your authority, shut the devil down.
Luke 10:17The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your
name! And He said to them, I saw Satan falling like a lightning [flash] from heaven. Behold! I have
given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental
strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm
you.
Luke 4:33 "Now in the synagogue there was a man who was possessed by the foul spirit of a demon;
and he cried out with a loud (deep, terrible) cry, Ah, *let us alone! What have You to do with us [What
have *we in common], Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know Who You are — the
Holy One of God! But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent (muzzled, gagged), and come out of him!
And when the demon had thrown the man down in their midst, he came out of him without injuring
him in any *possible way. And they were all amazed and said to one another, What kind of talk is this?
For with authority and power He commands the foul spirits and they come out! And a rumor about Him
spread into every place in the surrounding country. Then He arose and left the synagogue and went into
Simon's (Peter's) house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering in the grip of a burning fever, and
they pleaded with Him for her. And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and
immediately she got up and began waiting on them.
Acts 19:13 Then some of the traveling Jewish exorcists (men who adjure evil spirits) also undertook to
call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, I solemnly implore and charge
you by the Jesus Whom Paul preaches! Seven sons of a certain Jewish chief priest named Sceva were
doing this. But [one] evil spirit retorted, Jesus I know, and Paul I know *about, but who are you? Then
the man in whom the evil spirit dwelt leaped upon them, mastering *two of them, and was so violent
against them that they dashed out of that house [in fear], stripped naked and wounded.
