Alfred Mica Smith was the well-loved
Professor of Chemistry and Metallurgy at
the Ballarat School of Mines between
1881 and 1922. Upon reaching the age
of 78 Mica Smith retired.
The SMB Students’ Magazine reported:
In the annals of the School, the year
1922 will be noted chiefly as the last year
in which Professor Mica Smith taught
here. With his retirement, a memorable
epoch closed. The Professor has served
the School for 42 years with a service,
the length and thoroughness of which
are unique. … It is not quite realised in
this city how famous the School became
throughout the world, nor to what extent
the Professor was responsible for its
high position in the mining and
metallurgical world. …

Acrylic on canvas with Hessian
This mural, commissioned by the Ballarat Teachers’ College
Students’ Representative Council in 1965, was paid for by
the students and staff of the Ballarat Teachers’ College
1965.
At that time it was stated that George Johnson belonged to
the ‘Hard Edged’ school of abstract painters who has set
themselves far above the mass of abstract painters by the
vitality and artistic ability displayed in their work.
At the unveiling of the mural the artist said We are all part of
life and are growing and developing in many different ways,
the process of development is often taking place without us
even being aware of it. In my painting the embryo shapes
appear and grow. I have tried to make the mural symbolic of
life and growth. … It has balance and harmony and perhaps
discord, as does life – one malfunction or imbalance throws
everything out.

James Gleeson is one of the few Australian
Surrealist artists. His early Surrealist and
apocalyptic paintings were a response to
social conditions and despair of the world
around him, the human condition being a
major theme in his painting. This is often
expressed through the masculine body
realistically portrayed in a world of cosmic flux
symbolizing the metaphysical reality of the
subconscious.

Multi-plate etching
Observations of the everyday experience feature in
Bowen’s work. Objects are flattened in perspective
or seen in cross-section slices.
The Car Park was winner of the 1994 Fremantle
Print Award. Art historian Susan McCulloch says:
“Born out of the daily grind of stop-start commuting
by car along Melbourne's Punt Road to and from
his former workplace, the feeling of this large work
is of duality. On the one hand there is the crowded
chaos of a relentless number of cars choking the
roads; on the other, order is imposed in his aerial
view of cars "parked" around intersecting roads as
well as the actual charting of roads and interstitial
spaces.”

Ollis was head of painting at Latrobe University,
Bendigo, before his appointment as head of the
Sydney Art School. His work has been described as
allegorical expressionism.
While the simplification of shapes and humorous
content of the paintings suggest life-size
cartoons, the paintwork, colour, composition and
the lack of overt satiric forces the viewer into a
more subtle relationship with the painter and the
painting than with the more explicit cartoon
format.

Jacono stated: “Each monotype I pull shows
me something new, a sweeping mark or
passage of overlapping tone can be poetic.
… here, the printmaker’s tools and
equipment – printing roller, spatula, tubes of
ink – appear as the protagonist’s means of
acquiring the image, of transforming inner

Unknown Artist
[Advance Australia]
Acrylic on canvas
This artwork was found among items associated with the
Ballarat School of Mines. Although its purpose remains
unknown, it was possibly painted by a staff member or student
for use on Wattle Day.
Wattle Day originated in October 1889 by the Wattle Blossom
League, and was associated with the Australian Natives
Association during the lead up to the Federation of Australian
States. The first 'national' Wattle Day was celebrated on 1
September 1910. Early Wattle Days involved planting wattle
trees in school grounds, street decorations of wattle blossom,
and wearing sprigs of wattle.
As public support for Wattle Day peaked, World War I broke out.
Wattle took on a new significance during the war years,
symbolising home for military personnel serving overseas.
Beautifully designed Wattle Day badges, as well as wattle sprigs,
were sold as a means of raising money for organisations such as
the Red Cross.

After Euclid’s Rule (Diptych), 2003
Etching, aquatint, photo etching
Euclid’s elements show how to construct
infinitely varied geometric compositions from
points, straight lines and arcs of circles. This
diptych is based on spaces constructed using
Euclid’s rule with emphasis on architectural
forms and the polemics of space. Four copper
plates have been used in an attempt to suggest
that the layers beneath each determine a
specific experience of a space: a kind of chaos
and order emerges in its completion.

Helmet Bowl and Vessel, 2003
Thrown and altered porcelain with limestone glazes.
Neville French is a graduate of Ballarat College of
Advanced Education, a predecessor of the University of
Ballarat. He has lectured in Ceramics at the University of
Ballarat Arts Academy from 1982. He is inspired by the
soft light and isolated, bald rolling hills near Ballarat where
he lives, and the big domed skies of Maryborough in
Central Victoria where he grew up.
The work of Neville French involves an exploration of
elemental vessels: extending porcelain to develop taut
contours and spatial dynamics. Forms are wheel-thrown,
altered and slowly scraped to develop a soft line and
solidity. Coloured matt glazes are layered and fused to
the porcelain body through multiple firings to give
expression and luminosity to the surface.

Great Meeting of Gold Diggers December.
15th 1851, 1852
Coloured engraving
One of the first large goldfield meetings was at
Castlemaine in 1851. After the extraordinary
success of the Mt Alexander Diggings the
Government issued a proclamation, raising the
licence fee from thirty shillings to three pounds. As
soon as these intentions became known a public
meeting of miners was held. For miles around work
ceased, with diggers travelling as far as Bendigo to
attend the meeting. It is estimated that around
18,000 people attended the meeting.
The notes with the engraving state The trees in this
locality are chiefly stringybark; some of them are
peeled of their covering, as many persons prefer
erecting bark huts to living in a comfortless tent. The
various groups, and costumes of the men, are
characteristic of our gold digging community.

Mark KOBAL
Face the Future II, 2005
Woodcut
Kobal’s work predominantly shows views
of solitary figures depicting fragments of
everyday life and domesticity. His work
explores psychological aspects of
relating to interpersonal relationships;
intimacy and detachment; the mundane
repetition of daily television gatherings,
and subtle gestures which aim to evoke
a variety of moods and emotions.

Where Shadows Lie [diptych], 2005
Pigment Inkjet Print
Szilagyi’s work expresses a sense of
uncertainty through the exploration of
dualities such as reality and fiction, past
and present, personal and cultural,
memory and interpretation. The artist is
interested in the meanings viewers make
from
juxtapositions
of
archetypal
imagery, and the gaps that occur
between images.

Synthetic polymer paint, pen & ink on

The art of Wendy Stavrianos' art is
intensely personal; and has an intensity
which permeates the surface into the
very imagery that expresses her deeply
felt inner progress, while acknowledging
and calling upon the figurative
associations of her outward journey.
‘Vision Through Darwin’ was completed
during Wendy Stavrianos’ term as
lecturer at Darwin Community College
(1973-5). This work results from
experiencing and surviving Cyclone
Tracey.

Grass Seeds, 1999
This Dreaming tells the story of the grass
seed that is part of the bush tucker found in
the region of Utopia. This seed is collected,
crushed to a fine powder and is then used
to make bread, very similar to damper. The
people of Utopia were still using this seed
as late as the 1950s. During that time the
seed grew in abundance but as the years
passed there were very few good seeds to
be found due to bullocks roaming the land
and eating the grasses. The people then
began to eat a substitute that the white man
provided, and today very few Aboriginal
people collect these seeds.

Tingari Cycle, 1999
This Painting depicts ‘tali tjuta’ – many sand
hills of the Murrawa area West of Lake
McKay. In a minimal linear style, the artist
has depicted a particular site known as
Wanapatangu, which is recorded as being
north-east of Wilkinkarra (Lake McKay) in
Western Australia. This is one of the points
where the Tingari ancestors stopped for
ceremonial and social activity in their long
journey across the desert. According to the
artist, the rectangles mark the watery areas
that surround Wanapatangu.

Bush Medicine
‘Bush Medicine Dreaming’ depicts the
leaves of a special plant that is used to
aid in the healing process. The leaves
are collected and then boiled to extract
the resin. Following this, the resin is
mixed with kangaroo fat collected from
the kangaroo’s stomach. This creates a
paste that can be stored for up to six
months in bush conditions. This
medicine is used to heal cuts, wounds,
bites, rashes and as an insect repellent.
The Dreaming that is the basis for
Petyarre’s paintings comes from the
important ceremonies and traditions
held by the people of Atnwengerrp.

Jan SENBERGS (1939- )
B. Latvia, arrived Australia 1950
Melbourne, 2003
Lithograph
Ten-year-old Jan Senbergs landed at Melbourne in
1950 with his family. His story is a remarkable
voyage, from refugee driven by events in the
closing months of World War II, to major Australian
painter.
Largely self-taught, Senbergs has formulated an
expressive, highly idiosyncratic style that is capable
of great social and political comment. His subjects
range from the dramatic landscapes and cityscapes
of Port Melbourne, the mines of Mt Lyell in
Tasmania, the Antarctic, to figures in history, such
as William Buckley and Wilbraham Liardet. His
distorted, map-like views of Melbourne and Sydney
are resonant and original images of Australia.
Senbergs' received the prestigious posting as
Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard
University in the late 1980s. He is the only
Australian artist to receive this honour.

Drop Tank, 2006
Etching
Drop Tank is the name given to a
World War II aircraft fuel tank. Three
(UB608)
similar tanks were used by the artist Ian
Fairweather to construct a raft in which
he attempted to sail from Darwin to
Indonesia in 1952. The journey was
perilous, and Fairweather and the
remains of the raft were washed up on
the island of Roti. The artist is
interested
in
the
metaphoric
significance of the ‘drop tank’.

The Approach of the Old Stables
of Cobb & Co., Melbourne, 1926
Etching
Cobb's reputation rests on a large
oeuvre of etchings, built up during his
lifetime and depicting with meticulous
accuracy the architectural splendor of
Melbourne's colleges and churches,
vistas of the city, the tea-tree patterned
foreshore and the outer areas of bush
and countryside. State galleries hold
many examples of his work.
Cobb & Company was first formed in
Australia in the year 1854 by John
Peck who had arrived in Melbourne the
previous year from the United States of
America. There he had been employed
by the American Stagecoach Company
named Wells Fargo. He used his
knowledge and expertise and joined up
with fellow American's, Freeman Cobb,
James Swanton and John Lamber as
the founder members of Cobb and Co.
in Melbourne. Their first coach began
running in 1854. The last few of the
Cobb & Co horse-drawn coach lines in
Australia, were still running in the year
1924.

spheres.
