Monday, Nov. 9
Standards Addressed/TEKS: 7A-J reading comprehension, 10B text evidence, 11A theme, 11B setting,
11C characters, 11D inferences, 11G literary elements.
Objectives: Students will begin their student of “A Man Called Horse.” They will use the story to
study characterization and cultural conflicts.
Anticipatory Set/Bell: Students will complete a vocabulary exercise on words from “A Man Called
Horse.”
Teaching/Instructional Process: Students read and discuss “A Man Called Horse.”
Guided Practice and Monitoring: Student comprehension will be assessed through discussion of the
story.
Tuesday, Nov. 10
Standards Addressed/TEKS: 7A-J reading comprehension, 11A theme, 11B setting, 11C characters,
11D conflicts, 11G literary elements, 13B internet.
Objectives: Students will better understand “A Man Called Horse” by completing a webquest on the
Crow Indians and other aspects of the story. They will continue to read and discuss the story as an
example of character change and cultural conflict.
Anticipatory Set/Bell: Students will begin a webquest on Crow Indians, Dorothy Johnson and Boston
of the mid-1800s.
Teaching/Instructional Process: Following the anticipatory set, students will continue to read and study
“A Man Called Horse.”
Guided Practice and Monitoring: Student understanding will be assessed through discussion and the
monitoring of the webquests.
Wednesday, Nov. 11
Standards Addressed/TEKS: 7A-J reading comprehension, 11A theme, 11B setting, 11C characters,
11D conflicts, 11G literary elements.
Objectives: Students will complete their study of “A Man Called Horse” with a formal assessment.
Anticipatory Set/Bell: Students will complete their webquests.
Teaching/Instructional Process: Students will be given a test on “A Man Called Horse” which will
include an A-P-E essay question on character change.
Guided Practice and Monitoring: Students will be assessed through their webquests and their tests.
Thursday, Nov. 12
Standards addressed/TEKS: 7A-J reading comprehension, 11A theme, 11B setting 11C characters, 11D
conflict, and 11E plot.
Objectives: Students will be given time to complete missing assignments prior to the end of the six
weeks.
Teaching/Instructional Process: Students will complete missing assignments. Those with no missing
assignments will be given the opportunity to do an extra credit assignment, which will be available to
all students as optional homework.
Friday, Nov. 13
Standards Addressed/TEKS: 7A-J reading comprehension, 11A theme, 11B setting, 11C characters,
11D conflict, 11G literary elements, and 3A-C conventions.
Objectives: Students will be introduced to fairy tales, folk tales and irony by reading and studying ‘The
Princess and the Tin Box” and “The Talking Skull.” They also will learn to write crossover essays on
the two stories.
Anticipatory Set/Bell: Students will complete an exercise on participial phrases.
Teaching/Instructional Process: Students will read silently the two short stories and complete a
comprehension exercise on the stories. Then, they will write crossover essays using the two stories.
Guided Practice and Monitoring: Students will be reviewed on the format for crossover essays prior to
writing their own essays.
