Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His
Contemporaries
October 14, 2012–January 20, 2013
Chilton Gallery II and Focus Gallery I
Beginning with the early designs of Jules Chéret—the “father of the
poster”—the exhibition explores the earliest days of the affiche
artistique (artistic poster) and its flowering in Paris, first under Chéret in
the 1870s and 1880s, and then with a new generation of artists
including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard
Vuillard, artists who brought the poster to new heights in the 1890s.
Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His Contemporaries examines
the story of the French artistic poster in all its complexity. The show will
highlight artists well known to the public—such as Toulouse-Lautrec,
Alphonse Mucha, and Théophile-Alexandre Steinlin—as well as names
less familiar but equally powerful in their impact.
Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His Contemporaries is
organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum. The curator of the Dallas
presentation is Dr. Heather MacDonald, The Lillian and James H. Clark
Associate Curator of European Art.
Air transportation in Dallas is provided by American Airlines.
The Dallas Museum of Art is supported in part by the generosity of
Museum members and donors and by the citizens of Dallas through the
City of Dallas/Office of Cultural Affairs and the Texas Commission on
the Arts.
