When does James Gatz change his name? Why?
He changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby when he was seventeen,
and this is because he wanted to run away from his unfortunate life as James Gatz and
start another one as he met Dan Cody in the Lake Superior.
Why does James Gatz of North Dakota row out to Dan Cody’s yacht?
Even though James Gatz once joined a small Lutheran college of St. Olaf, he
soon dropped out because he felt that the school has made seldom change in hislife, and
felt that school was useless. He returned to Lake Superior, and on a normal day where he
was searching for something to do, he met Dan Cody, a man that changed James Gatz’s
life forever.

Describe Gatsby’s parents.
Gatsby’s parents were unsucessful farm people that was simply just not good
enough for Gatsby. James Gatz creates the ideal character of Jay Gatsby based on his
imagination to avoid the reality and become the character of Jay Gatsby for the rest of his
life.

What does Cody’s yacht represent to Gatz?
Cody’s yacht, as described in the book, represented all the beauty and glamour
in the world. Tuolomee is also connected to the ideal life that he has always dreamt of,
because it is such a luxurious yacht that Cody was sailing on.

What kind of jobs did Gatsby do for Dan Cody?
Gatsby worked in many different positions, including turn steward, mate,
skipper, secretary, and a jailor that was to have Dan Cody in control while he is drunk,
because Cody simple knew that he would embarrass himself.

How long did the job last?
This sail lasted for 5 years, and they went around the continent 3 times during
those years. The journey ended as Dan Cody died a week after Ella Kaye came on board
one night.

What did Cosy look like? How do we know?
Cody is a gray-haired, rosy-cheeked man with a hard, empty face. Nick, the
narrator, knows this because in Gatsby’s room, there is a picture of them together, both in
yachting costume.

What happened to Gatsby’s $25,000 inheritance from Dan Cody?
Even though Gatsby inherited the money, $ 25000, from Dan Cody, Ella
Kaye, who tried to manipulate Cody just as if she is Madame de Maintenon, took the
money. She used legal device against Gatsby, and he never understood them, and got the
money instead.

How does Gatsby feel about Tom and the Sloanes dropping in?
Gatsby was being very polite and welcomed them with warm delight from the
beginning, even though none of them really cared about Gatsby’s mannered greeting. He
was definitely startled by the fact that Tom was also present at his house. Because of his
relationship with Daisy, it is obvious that Gatsby talks in an almost agressive manner and
can’t control his impulse to have a conversation with Tom.

What do you think is the real reason for them dropping in?
Tom found out that Daisy knows Gatsby in person, and has come to find out
more about the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby, and more about Gatsby as well.

Why do Tom and the Sloanes snub Gatsby after asking him to dinner?
Because their real intention of being here is to found out more about Gatsby,
not to be friend with him. Thus, they are not delighted about the fact that Gatsby wants to
join them in the dinner, because they don’t like Gatsby at all. For example, Tom is
implying that Gatsby is one of the “all kinds of crazy fish.” They leave early so that
Gatsby can’t join them for the dinner.
Why does Tom come to Gatsby’s party with Daisy?
Tom accompanies Daisy to Gatsby’s party because he was definitely disturbed
by the fact that Daisy is “running around” to parties alone.

at the party?
Gatsby introduced Tom Buchanan as the polo player, and even though Tom
objected it, he was known as the polo player for the rest of the night.
According to Nick, what is Daisy’s real response to the party?
Daisy didn’t really enjoy the party itself, except the times she spend with
Gatsby. It was the general atmosphere of West Egg, the unknown town that is just created
in a fishing village of Long Island,the party, its raw strength and its prominent fate that
scared Daisy, because this was all from the simplicity that she couldn’t understand.

What does Tom suspect Gatsby might be?
He thinks that Gatsby is a bootlegger because it is one of the few businesses
that one can make so much money in such a short period of itme.

What did Gatsby want of Daisy?
Gatsby wanted Daisy to tell her husband that she never loved him.

What did Gatsby expect his party to accomplish?
He simply wanted Daisy to enjoy the party and he was disappointed that she
didn’t like it.
